Still just sitting around waiting to hear something from anyone from my campus.

for SAI, we have TBS [one of the earlier chapters], KKPhi, Mu Phi Epsilon, Phi Mu Alpha, pretty much anyone thats a music major is involved in one of these.....
and since we are all engineering majors [and i am the only one that was vaguely related to anything musical in college out of all the girls.... yaay Choir!] i don't know how well it would hold up.

I've told PHC that we didn't want to be affiliated with them, they don't seem to understand that. :(

and on a depressing note: i totally bombed my Linear Algebra Test Today. :( oh well off to drown my sorrows in dove chocolate covered almonds.

No, I meant that you could use SAI as an example of a social sorority that is not a part of Panhellenic.

If they are asking you to follow the same rush rules as the NPC groups do then I don't think you even want to be an associate member.

I stand on my earlier statement that the Panhel advisor doesn't know her ass from a hole in the ground...you are a social/professional org. She needs to understand that. Maybe you should direct her to this thread!!

co-sign. the engineering sorority should not fall under the college panhellenic umbrella. when it comes to catagorizing it, it would be more correct to put it in the catagory of a professional organization.

i am going to check out a college website to see under what division they placed the engineering sorority.

i return with incomplete information. on the national website of the engineering sorority i looked up, there is no information about what "type"(npc,honor, professional,etc.) of sorority they are. on two collegiate websites of the same sorority, they were listed as associate members of the collegiate panhellenic. however, i don't think that they could ever be anything but associate members, because there are restrictions on their membership(only eligible for membership if you are an engineering or science major). they may have to come up with a different catagory for them, as they expand to more campuses.

I was wondering what Engineering organization[s] you looked up? Here is the basic rundown i gleaned off the national homepages.

Phi Sigma Rho- Phi Sigma Rho is a social sorority for women in engineering and engineering technology.

Alpha Omega Epsilon- Alpha Omega Epsilon is a professional and social sorority composed of female engineering students and alumnae.

Alpha Sigma Kappa- Alpha Sigma Kappa is unique because it is a social sorority for technical majors.

I contacted panhellenic a while back, [i started this journey Fall semester - before spring rush] about what it would take to be an associate memeber [ 11 NPC sororities, and 0 associate members on campus] and i was told it would be a long process and the chances of it happening are slim. i then informed the Panhellenic Advisor i would just be a national engineering sorority affiliated with the College of Engineering. i don't know why she came back to tell me that i HAD to affiliate with PHC. We have 3 local orgs that are independent, but i assume that since they are local [vs. national] the don't need to be part of the PHC.

Whatever the case, i'm going back to campus tomm., starting my mentoring [i get to help freshman in the College of Engineering, its also a great recruitment opp!:D] and on monday i will go pay a visit to the Student Life office.

Whatever the case i'm not giving up... I've met some really awesome girls {now one is my future roommate} so honestly i think i have found a bond that i can count on. I've put a lot of time and energy into seeing this grow, and it has [i'm "president/founder"] and i'm not going to go chopping my work down.

thats my rant.... i finished linear algebra, got a frappachino, and am having a family PS3 night/send off party.... YAAY FOR BIG CLOSE-KNIT FAMILIES! caffeine maybe thats why i'm so hyper [more so than usual]

so heres an update...
I went in and talked to the Panhellenic advisor and we straightened things out....
we also are in the process of registering our local org.... we got to make a name, colors, and blah blah blah.... its so exciting.... and picking out a name was exhausting.... we would look up certain combinations to find out they already existed... then keep going... it took us 4 hours with the help of the internet... i am also trying to find ways to get funding from the campus/state/college of engineering...

i just read RUSH at UCSC i feel motivated [more so] and i got some really good ideas... i think i am only posting here to hear my own voice and have a written history of the process [b.c i suck at keeping journals and the written stuff i have only has the name, motto colors... blah blah blah...]

So, have you decided then to form your own local instead of pursuing membership with the engineering sorority? Or is the local a "fill in" until things get moving with the national engineering sorority?

well things are pretty much at a standstill with the national engineering sorority and the members here are getting impatient... i've contacted several people in the Organization [nationally and not] and i haven't heard anything since April. While pursuing national affiliation is still an option, the members and i believe we should build up funds and new members while working on building a climate [like getting our name out there, community service... etc] that is more receptive to an engineering sorority for the local and potentially a national organization...

congratulations on all your news and thank you for being so mindful to have colors, motto, etc. of your own which are unique and original. if you want to eventually affiliate with the national engineering sorority, i hope that it works out for you.

what decisions do you and the greek advisor come to?

also, i apologize for not answering your question about which sorority i had researched, but i did not revisit this thread until today. honestly, i cannot remember with organization it was, but i think it may have been AOE.

i still think that an engineering sorority deserves its own distinct greek council, since it is more specialized in its membership selection.

i have a question for NPC'ers. THe assistant dean of the college of engineering [from here on out reffered to as COE] is our advisor. He is only a temporary advisor. There is this Eng. Undecided advsior that we were interested in contacting. I came to know that she was a member/is an alumna [still a little iffy on that] of an NPC sorority. I was wondering if she is an Alumna, is there any restrictions of her serving in an advisor position for us?

as for symbols and colors and motto...
.... well we tried to be as unique as possible. while i won't reveal the name yet, our colors are indigo [a bright purple-y blue, that is hard to find so we have to settle for royal blue on shirts.. ] yellow [like a lemony shade] and powder/sky blue. our symbols are A compass [the navigational one not the drafting one] with a fleur de lis [like this one] and a gear [go figure...]
our flower is the cornflower [tenative] and our jewel is the sapphire.

i know it sounds like were ripping off of kappa but we aren't. we tried to use the symbols we like in a way that isn't copying them. we have a kappa here and in no way are trying to emulate them. Conflict with any NPC org is the last thing i want here.... well conflict with any org period.

Do you have Alpha Xi Delta on your campus? Your colors would probably get confused. AXiD's colors are double blue (dark and light blue) and gold.

You didn't ask for opinions on this, however...
 

Though I know from reading your posts that your intentions are completely good and you are not imitating any group, others will likely not be so understanding when they see the coincidence of the blue and blue, sapphire, and compass with fleur de lis. You won't have the opportunity to explain to them your rationale before they jump to the conclusion that you've taken inspiration from the symbols of another GLO on your campus. As a new group starting out, it would be really unfortunate if you were viewed as posers, even though you aren't. Just my .02.

Also, as you may know, Alpha Xi Delta's colors are light blue, dark blue, and gold. (One of my Kappa friends has an A Xi D daughter, and they think it's cool that their colors are so similar.)

Well, Theta Phi Alpha has the compass too, and their colors are silver, blue and gold.

Like I said in that Kappa Gamma thread - unless you want to go w/ orange and puce and have your mascot be the horny armadillo, there's going to be some overlap.
