i know TONS of people who say "pahk the cah" and "retahded" etc...

but there is another boston accent that is lesser known... the "society" Boston accent. My grandmother grew up in Newton (classy Boston suburb) and has almost an affected English accent, as do her sisters and many women (although more of her generation than younger generations...) and even some men, all of whom are wealthy and from the suburbs, Beacon Hill, West Roxbury etc.

Yes, unfortunately I grew up in Farmville too. My parents both work at Longwood. And then I ended up going to school here too. Were any of your friends that went here in a sorority? If so, then you probably know about our jumpers...

KillarneyRose, a jumper is a dress that ummm... kinda looks like a maternity dress. I hate them, but they are tradition here.

SSS1365, I used to have to wear jumpers when I attended private school from K-8 (part of the uniform). But I thought they were cute...perhaps that they are different kinds of jumpers? Well the jumper styles change over the years, but right now they're long and I feel like a pregnant grape when I wear mine, cuz it's too big for me. Each sorority has jumpers in their own colors... except Alpha Gam, theirs are plaid and in my opinion the ONLY cute ones!

SSS1365, yes, my jumper looked a lot different! It was, as I said, above the knee, and mine was plaid--dark blue and yellow. It was actually pretty nice! Compared to other private school uniforms, my friends and I felt very lucky...b/c there were some schools that had the ugliest of colors on their jumpers!!

Mon Dieu!!! How could I have forgotten one of Canada's most distinctive accents - Quebecois. Lil G, I'll agree with you, the Newfies also have an accent all their own.

Hi Longwood ladies! I am sorry to bring up the jumper thing again but I was just wondering when you wear them? Is it everyday to class and all? Or just for sorority functions? Do all female students wear them or just sorority women?

First off, people everywhere have accents. Secondly, Californinas do use slang. I remember when I was in high school I went on the Close-Up Trip to Washington, DC, and there were people there from Minnesota, Wyoming, Rhode Island, South Carolina, etc. Everyone sounded different from each other. I remember making a list for my "new friends" of slang we use in Cali--such as crib, the spizzot (spot), fo-shee-zee (for sure)(that some ghetto E-40 slang for ya http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif), etc. We also, use the woord "like" alot, unfortunately.

I think in our society we judge how people talk on tv to be the norm, like news people, and actors. In that case I think people from the midatlantic and the west coast have the least amount of an accent.

Hmm that's an interesting question... I used to have a friend in conneticut that had a huge twang! he was born/raised in ct. too.. but i can't say i have heard a whole lot of people from that area to make a logical guesstimate :p

Some people say i have a teeny Texas "twang" but I swear I don't hear it
