No, it was more along the lines of partying balls in Austin and then driving to Acuna, Mexico to party more....which takes about an hour and a half.
.....quite stupid.....but very fun. |

Hmmm... around here seniors in high school go on non-chaperoned Spring Breaks like that all the time. I went to Jamaica with 8 other friends. We were fine. AND... Natalee Hollaway's trip WAS chaperoned... so it could happen either way.

If something horrible can happen to your child when a vacation's chaperoned, imagine the things that could happen if it WASN'T? |
Whoops, I forgot that this is supposed to be a fun thread. Those Laguna kids rock and so do their parents!!! :D

No point in not sending your 15 year old to backpack across Europe with a buddy for Spring Break. It's time for them to learn responsibility while the adults sit at home hoping for the best. Right. |
I wouldn't consider it bad parenting to let kids go on spring breaks when they're in high school. This is not to say my parents would allow it, but we also only got a 3 or 4 day spring break so it totally eliminated the possibility.
Didn't anyone ever go on senior week/beack week? I'm from Maryland so we went to Ocean City, about 3-4 hours from my house, but I do know people who went to Cancun. I was only 17 (like some of the kids on laguna) and my parents let me go off with my friends for a week. |

One time I lied about sleeping over a friend's house, but went to stay with my then-BF whose parents were out of town. Somehow my mom found out and sent the cops over to take me home. She's wasn't uber strict either, because I never did have a curfew -- but she made it clear that while I was still a minor, I couldn't go off on my own anywhere. At that time I hated her for what she did, but looking back her rule did make a lot of sense. |

I guess maybe its because my city is on the US/Mexico border, so we (not me...but everyone else lol) used to go across the border to drink/party/do whatever, and then come back. But I think it is absolutely wrong for parents to let their 16/17 year olds go out to another country with some friends. Hell to the no! I'm absolutely positive that my mother wouldn't. Like OTW's mom, she wouldn't even let me spend the night over at a friends (my mom was uber strict). I don't want to be so strict with my children, but i'll be stict enough to know that they aren't going 1,000-2,000 miles to a different country, just so that they can hook up/shag/ and drink til they drown. I don't even care how many chaperones there are. Chaperones can't be everywhere all the time. IF there were chaperones (which we werent made aware of) I doubt they really watched them. I sure as hell wouldn't want my daughter sleeping with all be boys and being shit-faced drunk. No way in H-E-double hockey sticks!! |

Dear Jessica,
You are out of high school yet you can't quite seem to shake the drama factor. Stay away from Laguna and hopefully you'll learn how to grow up! Signed, OTW SRSLY, as much as I hate to admit it...Cameron seemed like he was the more mature one this time around. I hope Derek and Tessa work out, but I really can't see that happening unless he learns how to defend himself and his girl to his friends. Speaking of "friends"...what kind of friends eat and run? I can't wait until Kyndra gets a taste of the real world. That shit might fly in Laguna, but elsewhere she'd get a major ass crackin'. I wonder what'll happen to Raquel and Alex next week? She's such a loyal friend and so not the drama queen -- it'd suck if she had to go through crap next week. |

How is that bad parenting? We were a smart group of girls. We didn't leave the resort, we were always in pairs, and none of us let another go off alone with anyone. We were all educated about the dangers of Spring Break and actually LISTENED to the warnings and to advice our travel agent gave us. We kept in touch with our parents every day. I don't see the difference in going on a senior spring break when the next year people go on college spring break. |

Applying that to letting kids go off on their own vacations, I don't see how any parent in their right mind could do such a thing. Unfortunate things can happen to you no matter how much you play it smart. |

I have already answered that question in this thread. ;) To add to my explanation, teenagers and young adults have a higher victimization rate for violent crimes and that has to do with their routine activities that are more conducive to victimization (as well as perpetrating certain offenses at a higher rate). So an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure until my child is 18 or older. Then he or she won't need an adult chaperone for such trips. Not every college student goes on spring break with friends. But the difference is that these are 18+ year olds and they are now legally held accountable for their craziness (or lack thereof). Until my child is legally capable of living/being on his or her own and financially capable of paying for his or her own stuff, my opinion counts a whoooole helluva lot. |
