Yeah, key word being DIVINE. God eats Golden Flake. So does Tommy Tuberville.

God gets dandruff, too. I always thought it was snow but apparently it floats down to earth as potato chips.

Honestly, who thinks up these brand names?

I guess we shouldn't even bring up Giant Eagle and Piggly Wiggly.

agzg 08-04-2006 04:40 PM

I have to wonder what went through these founder's minds when they set up the stores.

Maybe they tossed out "HUGE BIRD STORE" and went for Giant Eagle. Maybe they tossed out "wear your dirty clothes here" and came up with Piggly Wiggly.

I love Giant Eagle though - fuelperks? Getgo? Best ideas ever.

My mother-out-law used to say that she was going to "The Pig". Somehow, while I like Piggly Wiggly, that would nauseate me.

I've heard ads in the Midwest for The Giant grocery store, and they're identical to those of Giant Eagle. Somehow, they have to be related - but I don't think they have the fuel perks thing going yet.

i love piggly wiggly-the name;we don't have any here in naples.

near tallahassee there is a convenience store called-hoggly woggly. too cute!!

in oklahoma(not really southern, not really southwest, either) they have convenience stores called "git-n-go". yes it is g-i-t, not get. always cracked me up.

You should hear the way Pittsburghers say "Get" - sounds close to git.

Gitgo.

Ahhh...I love Piggly Wiggly!:P Winn Dixie is the devil though;) hehe The last time I went into a Winn Dixie i swear, almost everything was expired! Gross!

When I first moved to Florida, I thought "Winn Dixie" was a sweepstakes!

When I first moved to the South the only familar thing I could find was a Food Lion! I will tell you the one chain I wish would move South but it hasn't is Wawa. That was the best little convience store!

Anybody know what the most popular grocery store is? I guess I just havent gotten out of my area too much (well, and bought groceries), but most of the time when they talk about big grocery store chains I have no idea what they are talkin about. I know Safeway is a big one up north I guess, but we have none down here. I always thought Kroger and Publix were big, but maybe not. Publix and Whole Foods by the way, are the best grocery stores.

blueangel 08-05-2006 05:41 PM

I agree with you.. I LOVE Whole Foods. That's where I do 99-percent of my grocery shopping. They're very pricey, but I do like the quality of their foods. The one that I go to gets a lot of their produce at local organic farms. I wish they had a Publix by me. That is a fabulous store!

As for the largest.. the honors had been Krogers. They merged with Fred Meyer in 1998, and became the biggest supermarket chain in the country-- with $43 billion dollars in annual revenue in 31 states.

BUT in 200w, Wal-mart took over the number one slot with $53 billion dollars in grocery sales.

Albertsons is #3.
