What? When did you go to college? Where did you go to college? Unless one of our 50 great states is dry, it's not hard to come across alcohol - ESPECIALLY at college. And, if someone is under 21 and in a GLO, it's not really right to assume that their GLO is supplying them liquor. Booze at college is plentiful.

Not likely have the resources...hilarious, please tell me that was supposed to be sarcastic.

A. If pledges are underage, they will not likely have the resources to be partying five nights a week, unless your own brothers are supplying this alcohol to them. And in that case, I would suggest that they stop :D

Maybe "resources" was the wrong word. Yes, booze at college is plentiful, but if active brothers aren't partying every night of the week, how likely is it that pledges will be? You learn those habits from somewhere... However, this could be purely from my college experience and not similar to yours. The more important point was point B.

No, I cannot. Proceed at your own risk.

I know you all are just talking about GLOs, but I like to take a holistic approach to certain GLO topics:

Everything we do or become a part of limits or controls our life to some extent. In fact, you just mentioned a GLO code of standards and that serves to both limit and control in the name of upholding certain standards. This isn't unique to our greek lettered organizations. There are various rites of passage in our lives that prohibit people from doing certain things during certain phases even if they can legally do so. That could be another tangent because I think the definition of hazing is way too broad.

This is an interesting discussion and extremely good points are raised on both sides.

I think this is interesting.

I understand that people have personal time. Many chapters require their members to be involved in at least one other campus activity. Is it not similar if you mandate their time this way?

Not the same issue. That applies to all members not just pledges.

Not always. Alot of chapters/colonies require additional stuff like that during the pledge period... but look the other way when members to follow it. This also opens the cage to making pledges to special activities such as community service, often there own seperate activity from the chapter/colony.

Why, I think He is doing a Great Job of trying to explain His Thoughts!!:)

I really dont think He is talking about Hazing as Some think.

Individual Chapters will and do things because it is and has been done in Years before.

Is it and can it be wrong, Yes it is and can be. :(

That is why I and some others Read Dailey about the Crap that goes on and Chapters are Suspenioned!

Do They Reflect on All of us? Yes they Do!

I actually agree with you on this point. Some organizations or chapters may require new members to fulfill a certain amount of service hours. If a new member does not want to do so, is that hazing or is that person simply not fulfilling the promise?

Some people think wearing pledge pins almost 24/7 is hazing, but if you KNOW that is a national component of the process (or EVEN a chapter component) either bow out gracefully or get with the program. Worse things have been requested of pledges than SOME of the things highlighted in this thread.

The survival of this discussion is apparently contingent upon whether you're a smartass. Recognize your power. :)

Alpha Phi Omega does require pledges to complete a certain number of service hours. The big difference is that we do not have selective membership procedures. Everyone who wants to pursue membership is permitted to do so - therefore there must be some way to determine fitness for membership.

As far as what Little E was talking about - many NPC sororities require members to be in another extracurricular. I've never heard it specified WHAT, however. If you want to be in a club that only meets once a year and is basically only to put on your resume, I'm sure that would work - it's not what is intended, but if you're really intent on doing as little as possible I'm sure that you can.

I know I used to read about the sororities' pledges only participating in things like Derby Daze and never thought that was quite right. I still don't, but now knowing the size of the sororities at some schools I'm sure that the poor Sigma Chis would be overwhelmed.
