Wow this was a big trade.

The Red Sox today sent Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs as part of the a four-team deal that will send Expos shortstop Orlando Cabrera and Twins first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz to Boston. Cubs starting pitcher Matt Clement had been rumored to be a part of the deal, but in the end Chicago held on to him. The Red Sox also sent prospect Matt Murton and cash considerations to Chicago. In a separate deal, the Red Sox acquired outfielder Dave Roberts from the Dodgers for outfield prospect Henri Stanley.

I'll miss Nomar but at least he is a Cubbie now. I think the deal will help out Boston alot. Getting those quality players for someone that would have left the Sox after this year anyways is a steal.

I think Nomar will enjoy being a Cubbie. Plus, His Defense will help solidify the infield. Sosa, Nomar, Alou, Rameriez....pretty nice line-up.

Nomar isn't doing very hot on defense this year. I guess it is because of his injury. He does have a very hot bat though.

Steve Finley is now with the LA Dodgers.....blech! :p

Hopefully, His Defense will come back to him soon. As long as he keeps his bat swinging, the Cubs's offense should be alright.

don't knock Finley. He might be a very valuable asset for the Dodgers.

The Cubs lineup looks solid with Nomah now. The NL is so wide open, the cubs have as good of a shot as any I think.

The Loaiza trade was shocking since it wasn't talked about much around here but hope he does well with New York.

The Cubs should do well down the strecth.

Which team did loaiza go to : Mets or Yankees?

Not too sure about the Sox deal - on one hand Nomar probably was not coming back to Boston after this year. Things had reached a breaking point, and they could have lost him this year for nothing (except for a draft pick). In getting Cabrera and Mientkiewicz they get two decent players who can help this year. They do lose a big presence in the lineup though, and I'm not sure how much the two of them can replace Nomar's production.

As far as Stanley for Roberts - I think they're essentially trading for the same type of guy but a bit older. Stanley was hitting fairly well in the minors, but I don't know how he's done overall and I'm unsure of how much potential he has.

Loaiza for Contreras could make the Yankees look badly if Jose gets his act together...but he just was way too inconsistent, pitching well against bad teams and fading away against contenders. That one looks like a wash.

The Sports Guy column on Nomar...a really good summary of why he ended up being traded.

I've met the guy, and he seemed like a pretty solid person...talked to him for a while, even did a quick workout with him (random meeting when he was doing his rehab a couple years ago). From all reports though the guy could not wait to get out of Boston, and there really was no choice.

Gerry Callahan had a column in yesterday that strongly hinted that Nomar was jaking it this year with his ankle, and apparently told Sox CEO Larry Lucchino that it felt "Great now," after being traded. This was the same ankle that he feared would keep him out for the year.

Just a very messy situation.

i read the sports guy's column earlier this morning. he always seems to have a very good take on the Sox situations. Gammons had a pretty interesting column the other day with some information about nomah and the trade as well.

i'm still curious as to when, or if, nomah will go on the DL list now that he's with the cubs since that is what all the reports are saying he wanted to do with the sox. i may be one of the few that is not sorry to see him go, and i feel like i'm becoming more and more justified with that the more i read about it.

It sounds like he may not go on the DL at all...according to Dusty Baker it may just be a matter of resting him once a week or so. The Cubs officials say that Theo was very forthcoming about Nomar's injury, but upon inspection the Cubs weren't concerened.

I'd like to think he wasn't just jaking it...but it seems more and more that way. If the reports are true, he really goes down quite a few notches in my book. I used to have respect for the guy, but maybe his whole thing was an act.

Glad I didn't draft Nomahhhhh, maybe that's why I'm in first place. ;)
