Ok, here's my thoughts...

Coral and Nicol both need to meet some big, strong, mandingo brothers and get a good CRANKIN'. It may relax them.

They're both way too overboard. Enough has been said about Coral, so I'm not going there about her. Nicol has some deep personal self esteem issues, obviously. That whole fit of rage she displayed was all because she really must like Malik. Yeah, it's a bit of a trip that he has NEVER had "relations" with a black woman, but that's his own dang business. I like Malik. He remained completely calm and collected while Nicol went off on him from head to toe. Some Brothers would have put her in her place quick for that mess.

Anyway, like I said, a good "Crankin" can fix it all. LOL

I agree, Kevin was too deep and intellectual. Mohammed(?) and Kevin were the most laid back...they seemed to have relatively drama free existences. MTV likes drama...so, the sensible black person is out the door. In comes the loud drama queen/king. I guess a journalist (who knew he would end up co-hosting BET Tonight?) is just not "fun" enough. Just to respond about Kevin from Real World 1:
He did articulate well while he was on the show. But, if you remember, the whole argument between him and Julie blew up like that because Julie accused him of picking up a candlestick and threatening/throwing (i don't remember which one :counfused http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif at her. And, a few years later, circa 1996, he was arrested for abusing his then girlfriend. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

The only black people on RW that MTV hasn't shown to be "angry" are those that were never really in the house and did not have that much of an active involvement with their roommates and the show. Kevin (#1), Muhammed (#3), and Teck (Hawaii) all had very active and full lives outside of the show. Kevin was working on establishing himself as a writer. He also had an apartment in New York so he could leave whenever he wanted to. Muhammed was from San Francisco, had his own place, a girlfriend, and his music group. He didn't have time to really deal with the other roommates like that. And, Teck just liked to party and do his own thing.

MTV didn't have the opportunity to portray them as angry because they probably didn't have enough footage of them.

That's why I don't really get into the RW anymore. The FIRST show with Heather, Kevin, Julie and the crew was the BEST, IMHO. Since then, it has been a crock of STUFF!

MTV should have left well enough alone.

You are absolutely correct. I still remember Kevin(RW1) and Julie(RW1) and their big blow up fight. Even though they had that argument, he was still very articulate with what he was trying to convey to her. Kevin (RW1) could not have been any realer as far as describing the plight of the black man, and black people in general to someone like Julie who was so young and so white. What I mean by so white is that I think she was 19 and was from Alabama, and I know that she had never met black people like Kevin or Heather that were not from the country in Alabama.

YAAAAAAY!!! I think that makes 2 of us now, chickenlittle, I feel the same way you do.

I finally got a chance to see the RW episode from Tuesday night. I put the vcr to work on the night it actually came on. I am still shaking my head in straight up amazement http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif that Nicole went off on both Malik and Kevin in the manner that she did.

Now I understand where she was coming from with she thought that she, Malik and Coral had a bond because they are all black, but come on. Both she and Malik have white mothers, so he can't talk to anyone about anything that she has talked to him about unless its to another black person. Now considering that Malik is the only black male in the house, who in the hell is he suppose to talk to in or to vent things or just have a basic conversation with when he needs to talk to another male.

I really think she went off the deep end with it all, and I am really greatful that neither Malik or Kevin halled (is this really a word) off and slapped the living taste out of her mouth as my grandmother use to say. There is a way to conduct yourself around "people" regardless of if they are black or white or whatever, and I'm sorry to say that Nicole just doesn't know how to do it. That was just a really deep episode....sorry for the long post.

Interesting observation. Is it that MTV didn't have the "opportunity" to portray them as angry...or that they just weren't angry, period. I think it's the latter...being in that house all the time WOULD make me angry, so the remedy would be leaving the house as much as possible. *I'm about to catch a caaaase*

Hey everybody! I really missed this forum while I was away. It's taking me a while to read through all the threads, but I just had to comment on this weeks episode of RW.

Nicole seems really hurt because Malik isn't living up to her idea of what a black man is supposed to be. I think she feels she has invested a lot of time getting to know him only to realize she doesn't know him at all. We all know that can be frustrating. Nicole has lived a hard life and feels she doesn't have to share those details with the house. However, I think she would have eventually done so with Malik. I think that is what the real issue is. It's a lot deeper to Nicole than it is to Malik. She's on a totally different level than he is. Remember, Malik has told Mike that he doesn't really even know her, but Nicole felt like she knew Malik and his beliefs. That's why she feels hurt and betrayed by his admitting that he dates outside of his race.

I think she is concentrating on Malik's appearance and what she thinks it means about him because she is really into her own physical apperance. Nicole presents herself in a certain way and most of that comes through in what she wears and how she carries herself. So, is it surprising that she would make judgments about Malik based on his appearance? Really, what does having an afro have to do with being a real black man and being active when it comes to black issues within our own communities? Does that mean that Joe Black, CEO, who wears a three piece suit to work isn't a real black man? You don't have to wear a Marcus Garvey t-shirt and a 'fro to be a real black man and all that Nicole seems to think goes along with that. Remember when "Malcolm X" came out and EVERYBODY was wearing the "X" t-shirt? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif It became more of a fashion statement than anything else. Basically, it all comes down to the old saying "don't judge a book by it's cover".

As far as Malik is concerned, I don't see it the same way Nicole does. I don't think Malik is being hypocritical. Malik is young and a little naivè. Right now, he doesn't see that there is anything wrong with wearing a Marcus Garvey shirt and dating women outside of his race. I don't see that there is anything wrong with that, either. Malik seems more open-minded to me than Nicole and Coral. He seems more secure in himself than Nicole and Coral. I think that is what is really important. I see Malik doing more for his community than the other two.

Nicole and Coral have done nothing but bring dissention into the household. Maybe they think they are "keepin' it real" by being disrespectful and arguing with whom ever presents an opinion contrary to their beliefs and/or opinions. The way Coral acted at her desk at Arista was an embarrassment. She needs to grow up. It's really not that deep. And Nicole being "close-minded" about her music? They seem to be looking a gift horse in the mouth. How many people wish they had a job HANDED to them at Arista? C'mon, we have survived way more than that as a people. And these are their issues?

I agree. I think Nicole is confused (like a lot of Black people are) about what Black is/isn't. Not to spark THAT debate, but Black isn't talking loud, waving your arms around, etc. She needs to get past the surface values of what she thinks black is...and realize that Black people are as diverse as any other people.

No, I don't think Malik is dating outside his race. I should have made that clear. Sorry! Nicole seems to think that he is dating outside his race, though. Maybe she is from the "one drop of black blood..." school. Although she is biracial as well, she doesn't even consider dating a white man an option.

That's what I was thinking...how are you going to tell Malik not to tell anyone the details of their conversation (which, IMO, is absurd b/c it's not like she is freinds with Kevin, and anyway, friends talk to theach other in order to get through their problems)...She's a hypocrite...And she made herself look really bad by acting that was to Malik and to Kevin--who shouldn't have gotten involved in the first place, but it wasn't necessarily his fault b/c Coral opened her big mouth, which led to Kevin opening his)...Miss Nicole should know better, since she's from the 'Hood than to poooint her fingers in anyone's face...I'm sorry, but I would've been thisclose to hurting her...she knows better...Well, by seeing her confessional at least she knows she handled the situation badly...But she needs to realize that she can't force her beliefs on other people...And also that what a person wears does not define their level of blackness...What if we assumed she was a drag queen--which is what I first thought when I saw her on the Casting Special--just b/c she wears SOOOO MUCHHHH MAKEUPPPP????

Question: How does everyone feel about her never dating a white man, when she is biracial? Her attitude towards whites is rather iffy, being that she's mixed...It's like she is trying to erase and deny half of what and who she is...
