That is precisely the problem I had with the views expressed in the article to begin with. No one is saying that sex education should not involve abstinence education, and everyone agrees that abstinence is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy and STDs. However, the church is telling people that condoms are not at all effective when, in fact, they are about 90% effective, which are pretty good odds in my book. It would be one thing if the people who the church is teaching had access to the correct information regarding condom use and safe sex from other sources, but many of these people are from poor, uneducated areas and the only source of information is the church, which is basically lying to them. (And no, I'm not blaming Catholics. I would have the same reaction if it was the UN or the Boy Scouts or any other group going to these places and spreading this ignorance.)
