I think it also has a lot to do with the overall diversification of a particular university. You can't expect a Greek system to be well represented, if the school itself isn't. Relative to other areas of the country, my corner of the world is not really racially diversified.

The school and Crimson White certainly don't help the situation by referring to the different councils as "the white sororities" and "the black sororities." At least the local paper calls them "traditionally" white - the school doesn't even do that. No wonder they are having such a problem!! Talk about talking out both sides of your mouth.

This might be a stupid question, but why is it making such news? Is it just because it's at University of Alabama? If it is, then I somewhat understand, but if not, then I'm confused! I know several schools that have black women and men in their NPC and IFC organizations.
|
DZHBrown- No, that is not a stupid question. In the early 1960's through the early 1970's Alabama and most of the south was extremely segrated. This was to the point where former Ala. govonor Wallace tried to block at least two African American students from enrolling at U of Ala. He had a famous speech where he stood in the school house door and said, "Segregation now, segregation tommorrow and segregation forever." The Univ. has come a long way since those times and I sincerely comend Carla Fergason and UA's Gamma Phi Beta for breaking down these barriers even further.
|
I say, "more power to her!" Carla has shown herself to be a classy, poised, and intelligent young woman, who is also very beautiful! I hope the pressure doesn't get to her, and that she's able to enjoy four years - and then a lifetime! - of happiness as a Gamma Phi Beta!
Ladies of the UA chapter of Gamma Phi Beta: you have shown yourselves to be leaders on your campus! Congratulations and good luck! Carla: you have my respect and support! The Panhellenic of U of A: the choice is yours. It is my sincerest hope that you will make Carla's way in sorority easy, but not as a token - as a true sister of the Panhellenic! Congratulations once more! |

I'm really glad this happened at Alabama, and I hope other major SEC/ACC schools follow suit. But to suggest that this kind of segregation is a thing of the past is a bit of an ahistorical perspective, IMO. |
