We used to have the Gator Times (formerly known as Orange and Blue), but it went out of business. Either way, it was never close to being as popular as the alligator. It was only printed twice a week, and I couldn't stand reading the articles b/c of the mistakes.

Currently there is the Gator Standard, but it's sketchy to me. I don't know when it's printed, or even how to get it. If you happen to get one shoved in your face as you're walking to class... then you get one.

But to answer... the Alligator is very popular. You can find it everywhere on campus, and even some off-campus locations (i got it at a gas station once). Buses and classrooms are littered with copies....

It's just what you read when you don't want to listen to your professor. :)

Plus, the Alligator IS independent - it's not affiliated with the university & doesn't depend on the administration for anything.

We're boycotting the Alligator for the rest of the fall and also Spring 2003. Next year we're going to reassess the situation and vote in chapter again.

I think it's about time we do something like this...the Alligator has had negative articles on Greeks every day lately and non-Greeks must think we're out of our minds.

As for advertising, we're just going to have to look for other ways to get the word out. During our discussion about this before we voted, someone mentioned that the only people who read Greek ads are Greeks, and they've heard about whatever it is by word of mouth anyway.

I'm just happy that when stuff like this happens in the Greek community, we all band together. Whenever somehing comes up, it's usually brought up in chapter...we're given the facts and told how to respond tactfully if someone (esp. a non-Greek) asks about it. We're behind Theta and Sigma Chi all the way.

I don't know if you know this yet or not, but... instead of punishing Sigma Chi, I believe they made some sort of rule at a recent IFC meeting against announcing in character of the event. Although this may prevent further problems, I don't see how boys announcing in board shorts for a beach event could be so harmful? I don't know though, they know more than I do so this is probably a good thing.

P.S. The Sigma Chi's at UF from what I hear don't have a bad reputation... so I personally was surprised to hear about this incident!

If that was my chapter, we would have been dealt with severely.


Personally, I think Sigma Chi has gotten off light as hell over the years. In 1999 when frats were getting expelled or put on probation left and right......Sigma Chi didn't get $hit done to them, while the rest of us got expelled...those that didn't were put on probation. Only a select few didn't have any problems.

I have/had many friends in that chapter.....just about all my high school friends and many I met my freshman year at UF were in Sigma Chi......believe me.....they're no angels.


I'm guessing all of you were'nt around in 98-99......ask some of your older sisters how bad things were, and how lucky Sigma Chi was.

As a journalism major and a member of the editorial board, I know what goes into a paper. Out of our editorial staff, 90 percent of us are Greek. The practicum class is at least 70 percent Greek. We still have to print "anti greek" articles, because it is news. We printed 2 stories fall quarter about a fraternity and sorority on our campus being fined and put on probation due to a situation. It's not that we wanted to gossip, it was printed so that people would know the TRUTH, instead of going around saying "Oh I heard xyz is on suspension because they wore their pink catsuits outside on a full moon".

Would it have been better to have NOT heard about this?

The T+C took some heat fall quarter because we printed a story about a student who was arrested for importuning (basically an officer posed as a 12 year old girl who wanted to meet this guy, the student was arrested, later not charged). But people were OUTRAGED that we printed that story. They said we ruined this kid's senior year of college. No, I think he did that himself. We just report the news, good , bad, indifferent. If someone at my chapter burned down a house, I'd still print a story about it, no matter how bad it made us look. Papers can't be all daisies and coutillions, shit happens. Unfortunately for these two orgs, it fell on them.

And when you graduate into the alleged "real" world of Journalism, nothing will change except that you won't have the support of that many other Greeks around.

Everyone is quick to point to the nasty old media when the obvious situation is that when something newsworthy happens, it's very likely to get covered.

What sorority was she in & what happened to her? Where is she now? :confused:
