All this talk of North vs South is actually kind of amusing from my perspective way up in the great white north... because a lot of Canadians look at it the same way... the further south you go the closer you're getting to "Deliverance" which most of us figure starts as soon as you leave Washington DC's southern limits.

Not really...West Virginia was formed when citizens in that part of the state didnt want to secede from the Union with the rest of the Confederacy in the 1860's...just full of tidbits today

I had a debate one time with Billy O about this one time. I will never see Virginia as the south or DC as a 'southen city'. I live in San Antonio. Look on a map. about 97% of the United States is north of me. I am 6 degress north of the tropic of cancer. I am damn near in the tropics. If I have to drive 20 hours to the northeast to get there, it's not the south. I prefer to call it the "historical south"

I understand how you could be angry, being from one of those non-descript square states. THAT HAVING BEEN SAID... I draw contention with your above statemnt about bbq. Its not only better here, but its a passion. Have you ever celebrated Christmas dinner with a BBQ? I didnt think so. (aggieAXO will get my back on the following - Brackenridge Park) Ever camped with your family starting on wednesday before easter so that ya'll could get the best BBQ pits and spots in the park for easter? Again no. You are now dismissed. We do have some lovely parting gifts for you tho.

BTW, real BBQ doesnt need sauce. If its done right, the sauce merely compliments the meal, but it doesnt need it. (also, and I confidentially find this odd, in deep south texas, people will take thin sliced BBQ brisqet, chicken, or pork loin and make a damn sandwich outta it. Thats what I'd do with leftovers, not at a resturaunt.. but whatever)

Whoa... just a doggone minute. I KNOW you're not saying that people in Georgia don't know how to make good barbecue. Please tell me that I just misunderstood you or something, because folks in Georgia do not take kindly to being told that we don't know barbecue.

Barbecue is my family's traditional Christmas Eve dinner, complete with freshly made pork skins, homemade coleslaw, potato salad and pink lemonade. Barbecue was served at my oldest cousin's wedding rehearsal dinner, and it is a staple item at ALL summer events. Memorial Day, Labor Day and July 4th festivities are not complete without barbecue. Family birthdays, Father's Day, high school graduations -- all are celebrated with plates of barbecue.

(And I'm NOT talking "barbecue" in terms of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, folks. My boyfriend, a Yankee, is fond of using "barbecue" as a verb. This caused much confusion during the early days of our dating because he would say that he was planning to "barbecue" for supper. I would get excited about one of my favorite meals being planned, and then would become extremely disappointed to see plain old hamburger patties being laid out. That's called "grilling", people -- not barbecuing. Using the term "barbecue" as a verb only causes us Georgians to get our hopes up unnecessarily.)

So, please, don't try to tell me that people in Georgia don't know how to cook barbecue. :eek: It's a bald-faced lie if I've ever heard one.

This bbq issue is too funny. In Texas, everyone bbqs. I am sure in other states, you guys do the same, but i just find the idea funny and odd.

Oh hey lifesaver......the people camping out at a park to get a good bbq pitt is so true! Some of our friends decided to go bbq at the park this year, and they had some workers of their go like at 6am to get a good spot.... and there were people already there!!!

It sounds like your family does an awesome job DZRose:D :D :D (i'm hungary thinking about it)!!! I just meant that in the vast majority of the country, people (like your boyfriend) don't understand true barbeque. As long as it takes hours and doesn't use a grill, then your well off and you know the RIGHT way to do things. :D :D :D

Glad we got things straight, Betarulz! :D By the way, the church down the road from my office held their quarterly barbeque fundraiser this past weekend. They had the pit set up on Thursday morning. Unfortunately, my bf doesn't like barbecue so he wouldn't take me there for lunch Friday afternoon. :(

All I have to say about that is: if he ever gets around to putting that diamond on my finger, he's going to hate our rehearsal dinner. ;)

hahah. My sister had her rehersal dinner at Jo Cottons, outside of Corpus. The real kind of BBQ joint where they dint even have plates. All served on waxed paper. Thats serious BBQ.

I plan on doing same. 'Cept Rudy's is doin gmine. Hope my fiance dont mind. Thats breakup grounds right there. See www.rudys.com. My soulfood.

OK now Im confused, if the midwest only includes Kansas, Nebraska (Huskers suck...yeah Im still a lil made about National Champs 1998),Iowa, Missouri, and sometimes Oklahoma...why the heck do people say Michigan is in the Midwest along with Ohio, Indiana and Illinois? I mean Michigan needs to make up its mind where it wants to be. I sang a school song at football games for 4 years saying they were the "Champions of the West", and now your trying to tell me they aren't even in the Midwest?!?!

The Texassans drove the beef ( long Horns to Kansas ) . They were put on trains to go to NY and points east! Of course they had to feed them some good Ks/Mo food to get them fatter so would have meat on them!

I guess I am the only Arkansan who will come to the defense of my beloved home state. We are not backwards. We just have REALLY bad PR people. Granted there are some kinda scarry people in the mountains up in north arkansas, we just pretend they live in Missouri. Yes, we did give you Clinton, and we are sorry for that. We tried to warn you, but no one took us seriously!
Also, Arkansas is NOT the midwest.. we are southern thru and thru. In my travels, I have never met a person who could not understand me. I cannot say the same for some of the people I have met. Boston accents are scarry. I still am not sure what my best friend's grandmother was saying to me that one day.
Arkansas is not backwards - we just act that way to keep all the damn yankees from coming down and spoiling our state parks!

Hey, I'll defend Arkansas! People who are down on it should see the Ozarks and Boston Mountains in the fall, or the gorgeous bluffs up north of Fayetteville. And there's nothing like the spirit at a U of A game in Fayetteville or Little Rock!:)
