Sometimes it just happens that threads go off on a tangent. But, at this point your question has been answered multiple times, so now we are just chit-chatting. |

She should realize that we have members from a number of different ethnic groups / races in NPHC orgs. We do not limit our membership to AfAm only. |

There's no agreement between the two organizations to not pledge/initiate members of the others. It might not be the polite thing to do but there is not an NPC rule against it. |

Secondly, NPC or NPHC, it appears that members of both councils are suggesting that you contact ladies that you know or that have connections in order to get the information that you seek. As SoCalGirl said, "Topics of discussion are fluid," and advice shouldn't be invalidated solely because of the council. It appears that we are very much in agreement. Good luck to you. |

I 100% agree with everything pbear19 said. AI is completely different by each of the 26 NPC sororities. You cannot make a blanket statement about it at all. Now yes there are most definitely sororities who say " you have helped xyz so much that as a gift for your service we would like to offer you membership." Absolutely that is something that does happen with AI but it is not the most common and it is not the primary way for AI. It is a situational thing. Like pbear19 said not everyone who comes on here asking about AI is seeking to relive their college days. Were there some in the past that were like that? Sure. But is that everyone? No. There is no need to make assumptions like that when AI is such a situational thing. The OP sounds like she would make an excellent candidate for AI. AI is most definitely not the same as collegiate membership and it doesn't try to be. I am an AI and as a legacy of my sorority I could not join it in college because it wasn't on my campus. As an AI I have enjoyed getting to share the ritual and tradition with my mom. The alumnae group in my area has really taken me in and I don't feel any different from the other members. I have helped out with recruitment at a local chapter for a few years and I have learned all of the inner workings of recruitment and I have indeed been asked for advice. One can always learn new things. There have been national presidents and officers who are AIs. If a woman is really truly in it for the right reasons and has a desire to make new friends, appreciate tradition and get involved why turn them down? AI is not something that happens a lot simply because it's not a well known process. You don't have hundreds of women lining up hoping to AI just so they can have sparkly letters and nothing more. Sororities have high standards of who they let join so they have a right to choose who they see fit. If a candidate for AI seems to only want to relive college, then they will most likely be turned away. Trust the process. I was approved by the national president to AI. How cool is that? Not many people can say that. All I ask is that quick judgement on AI is not made on every person. The best thing to do is just give the appropriate advice ( situation permitting.) And yes people have given the proper advice here. Give the proper advice and then let the nationals handle it. There are many excellent AIs and it is not our place here to tell them it's not for them. |

Also you had a prior connection to the group you AIed into, so don't get your undies in a twist because no one is addressing you. |

I'm surprised the NPCers were cool with you going off on them in your previous post. You aren't going to randomly go off on an NPHCer just because your wannabe Greek self isn't getting the answers you prefer. /since this thread is almost over anyway :) |

Can you PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT NPHC in my thread? No offense, but I do not qualify for NPHC, thus why I am not seeking one of their organizations. Also, I do not think there was ANY mention of anything in any of my posts that would allow someone to think I was. I do not understand why the topic was brought up, and so adamantly discussed when it is of no relevance to my question or situation. How nice* .... * (Southern irony used in response to an impropriety, not the harsh urban Dictionary definition) |
wow!
Well I thought it was openness and sisterhood on this greekchat. This is very discouraging to a prospect. Sometimes sororities and fraternities become people's lives. (Which they should be for members.)But what about those who admire the service and work of a particular organization? What about those who aspire to be apart of such an outstanding group of people and make it their purpose in life to acheive such a goal? Making assumptions and being "stabby" towards someone due to their mishaps is beyond commendable. I do not believe your sorority, whether it be NPC or NPHC, will be proud of the choice of words and the deformation of history/ sisterhood placed on this forum. The atttitude given to an Al is that of a "Mean girl". We, as women, already have a lot to deal with a lot when it comes to being treated unjustly in this world. The meaning of "sisterhood" is used so loosely and then followed with an attitude or a stir in a non-greek direction. I am not greek and did not get the chance to go through a collegiate MIP. This did not distract me or stop me. I knew plenty of associates whom joined, but in reality, I knew I would be a part of the sisterhood I researched whether then or later in life. Do not be the reason a Woman is sent in a different direction. I am, personally, way too strong to let people knock me down. I was broke! Graduated with my Bachelors and made it out. Watch what you say about the less fortunate because we end up being the "over achievers/ most loyal" to the sorority you are making out to be something totally different. Never judge a book by its cover because you may not have been sitting in your spot if it weren't for people you know. Support is what is needed, not backlash. Goodnight. Stay blessed and prayed up!
