@ Ole Miss Glitter, I just heard the 115-130 from an official source too. This is gonna be a great year for everyone!

^^^That's not bad. What do you do about initiation?

All in one room but several "teams", shall we say, "working" the room.

I mean this with all due respect, but from the data that I was able to find regarding the percentage of Jewish students at Ole Miss, less than one-half of a percent of students are Jewish. Probably half or so of those are males. Given those numbers, it probably doesn't cross their mind to schedule sorority recruitment around the high holidays.

Really? I would not expect the numbers to be that small at a major university. But I really have no idea how Ole Miss is ranked academically; maybe I was giving it too much credit.

33girl 10-02-2011 09:56 AM

There was just a Frontline on about a lawyer convicted of bribery in Mississippi. Someone said "Mississippi isn't a state, it's a club." I thought that was an efficient way to sum it up.

Also I think Ole Miss is smaller than Bama or LSU.

old ATO 10-02-2011 10:32 AM

Certainly feel free to correct me on procedure and how it must play out. From a dad perspective I paid attention to guys and my wife to the girls side but I've heard comments from members of a couple of sorority chapters that they don't intend to take 100+. Honestly, I can see it from a perspective of available space but it surprised me in that I don't really recall sororities choosing not to take quota. At these numbers? I can see it for some if it's allowed within the framework of how many came back to pref.

Titchou 10-02-2011 11:34 AM

what they "intend" and what they get are two different things.
The chapters really have little control beyond the "who" they get. Unless their national office allows them to invite back fewer than allowed, their return rates will give them quota. And even if they lower their invitations to try to ensure a smaller pledge class, getting from 115 down to maybe a NM class of 90 is really hard to guage. The basic problem at Ole Miss is the same as at Arkansas - too many PNMs, not enough chapters.

True!

MaryPoppins 10-02-2011 02:29 PM

@33 Ole Miss hovers between 13,000 - 15,000 undergraduates usually. We have always had barely have enough students to play in the Division 1A of the NCAA.

@ old ATO - someone once told me that TriDelta is required to house all members from Sophomore year through Senior, so I would imagine a rule like that (if true) would be a cause for down sizing a pledge class if house total was too high (or would be too high next year) for some reason.

MaryPoppins 10-02-2011 02:48 PM

Just heard that quota was 125, not from an official source though.

ladybug12 10-02-2011 03:40 PM

bids

Bids go out in just a few minutes. I have also heard unofficial quota numbers and will update when I get better information.

Katmandu 10-02-2011 03:50 PM

I can only speak for my organization, but I know from my time as a chapter advisor, that any chapter that deliberately "Chose" to pledge fewer than campus quota would be in deep doo-doo with nationals. Bidding to quota is prime directive. Hence snap bids.

I didn't realize there was a minimum. TCU only had 6000 undergrads when I was there in the 90s and that has only (intentionally) increased to around 8000 now.

Can't be true.Too many places where they have way too many members to do that. Just take Alabama as an example - even their new house will only hold around 70 and average chapter size there is over 250. You just can't build houses big enough to hold all these people....

MaryPoppins 10-02-2011 04:12 PM

@ Titchou. Thanks. The person who told me was trying to explain to me in the late 80's why the Tri-Deltas at Ole Miss kept on and kept on adding living space onto their house at the time.

There is no school enrollment minimum. The only such requirement is to average 15,000 in football attendance. (from the NCAA membership requirment page)

The curtain fell and time passed! Things are different today than back then. Maybe that was a requirment then but it certainly isn't now!

dgdramadawg 10-02-2011 04:50 PM

My Ole Miss girl went ALPHA OMICRON PI and is so excited! They were one of her top two throughout recruitment, so it couldn't have been a better result. :)

MaryPoppins 10-02-2011 04:56 PM

@gdramadawg Congratulations!

gee_ess 10-02-2011 06:14 PM

quota

Ole Miss Glitter confirms what I heard about freshman quota being 117. I was not sure about secondary quota (upperclass), but 10 sounds right to me.

Outstanding. The ATOs are pumped. 85 pledges. If it wasn't the best acceptance rate in chaper history I'd be shocked. I'm really proud of them.

119 for Kappa Delta, I believe.

Congrats to all 9 sororities for a great and, I don't think it's hyperbole to say, historic rush for UM but my heart belongs to the AOIIs and KDs. Great job ladies. Where in the world are y'all all going to put all those young ladies?! Nice problem to have.

My girls went to Georgia Tech and had the newest and biggest house and they were never able to have chapter meetings in the house because their numbers got so big so fast. So it's not just these mega chapters....the days when you had chapter in the chapter room in your house are gone in a lot places. They have formal chapter in a large classroom on campus and for initiation, they have always traveled to Wesleyan in Macon where Phi Mu was founded.

Heard about a few of the neighbors/HS kids, so far one Kappa Sig and one AOPi, one Chi O, one Pi Phi, one TriDelt. :)

When do they do the first round of cuts due to grades?? Sounds like alot of girls were cut BEFORE they even attended the first skit round at Ole Miss. Is this true?

It depends on the sorority, since that is part of membership selection which is private. Some might release more after philanthropy and some might release more after skit.

OleMissGlitter 10-04-2011 03:08 PM

Sorry for the double post.

So it could potentially be a "grade cut" prior to skit round? Are they doing any snap bids this year??
