yes, both sisters are out.

Sore loser is never a good look on anyone

Apparently a Swedish wrestler stormed off the podium, took of his bronze medal and threw it on the mat. Then he walked away.

Agreed on James Blake.

Will add that Nadal is yummy too. Wow.

And... Federer isn't bad if you are into the clean-cut, preppy look.

So glad that my husband is a tennis fan.. I get to watch and just, um, enjoy. He thinks I actually watch for the sport.

clearly he doesn't know the slogan.. that's such bad sportmanship i mean some countries would be honored to receive any kind of medal..

***Sadly the U.S. is down on the medal count by one***

That's awesome! :D My cousin is one of the USAMU gunsmiths, I'll have to check if he's done any work with that guy.

Can't say that I follow women's tennis as closely, but.... I did watch women's beach volleyball with him last night. Does that count?

LOL. I think every woman's husband was glued to the television last night with a sudden and intense interest in that sport... ;)

Nittany, I'm trying to find an electronic copy of an article I read this morning.

It talks about a retired Chinese couple who paid and arm and a leg to see the Beach Volleyball matches. As she stares straight ahead; he is grinning. He is not watching the match. He is eying the bikini-clad dancers.

As soon as I read your post, I couldn't help but think of it.

NBC is really proud of the fact that they are able to air live some marquee events, including swimming and gymnastics. Of course, when they say air live, they only mean that it will be live to the Eastern and Central time zones. For some reason, viewers in the Mountain and Pacific time zones watch taped events.
http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/bei...urn=oly,100556

Ok this ticks me off since I live in Mountain Time Zone. Like i've mentioned before, I watch the Olympics for the women's gymnastics competition. So the fact that they cut out some of the gymnastics competition to show me stupid ol' Michael Phelps and his pre-recorded events, gets me miffed.

The U.S. baseball team won a 7-0 decision over the Netherlands today, with Stephen Strasburg throwing seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball, left fielder Matt LaPorta contributing a three-run homer and Washington Nationals prospect Shairon Martis taking the loss. That's the normal version.

The weird version ends with talk of a protest of a protest, and goes something like this: the game was halted for an hour and 45 minutes due to monsoon-like rain in in the top of the eighth. The announced attendance had been 996, a number that quickly plummeted to no more than 200. The first pitch after the delay was lined back at Dutch pitcher Dave Draijer, who left the game with an arm injury, leading to another delay.

By the top of bottom of the eighth, the rain had returned. By the top of the ninth, it was pouring. And with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, rain splashing everywhere and the Dutch down 7-0, the umpires pulled the players off the field, to loud boos, or as loud as a few dozen people could manage. Most of the remaining fans then left. Not counting Wukesong Baseball Field volunteers and national officials, there were perhaps 50 of us in the stands.
Anyone hear about this? Can you imagine having a game called on the account of rain in the ninth inning when you have bases loaded and no outs?

Link: To Full Article

LttleMsPrEp 08-14-2008 10:03 PM

that def. sucks that the game was called on the account of rain.. maybe if there were a few outs and the bases weren't loaded i'd understand... but stufff like that doesn't happen all that often so if i were one of the 50 people there i would kind of be pissed.

ISUKappa 08-15-2008 12:32 AM

I am extremely annoyed that the two Chinese gymnasts, who had extremely visible balance checks and issues with their routines, had fewer deductions than Shawn Johnson who had a much tougher routine and less problems. At least they scored Nastia appropriately.

nittanyalum 08-15-2008 12:57 AM

YAY USA women's gymnastics!! 1 & 2!!!

That little Shawn Johnson is a fireplug, isn't she? (and I agree, she was ROBBED on the balance beam)

pbear19 08-15-2008 12:59 AM

That was SO exciting!!! Wow. Much as I love watching Michael Phelps, seeing those two get gold and silver was definitely the best olympic moment for me so far. :D

lilzetakitten 08-15-2008 01:13 AM

Nastia is adorable. I felt so happy for her when she started crying when they officially announced her as the gold medalist. Her dad looks so happy!!

BetteDavisEyes 08-15-2008 01:17 AM

I admit it. I cried when they played the anthem. I cried too when her dad hugged her and he had tears in his eyes.

AGDee 08-15-2008 01:22 AM

I just cried too. I was, however, bothered by the quotes from the dad that there was only one color medal that was acceptable and they'd been training her whole life for gold. I realize having a gold medalist gymnast for a dad makes life different, but this didn't sound much better than the Chinese sports system to my ears...

I *am* glad our gymnasts don't look anorexic.

As for KSig's post about Mary Carillo... I'm sick of all of these kinds of things being done during prime time while they ignore every sport except swimming, gymnastics and beach volleyball. Would beach volleyball get as much coverage if the outfits they wore had more coverage?

No. How much coverage do you see of regular old volleyball on NBC?

Actually, I did see some, but I think it was in the post-midnight hours.

psst... I am with you on that

While I do respect and sit in awe of his athletic ability, and do admit that he has a nice set of abs, there are quite a few other swimmers that I would take in a heartbeat over him. This includes Aaron Piersol, receding hairline and all. Love. Him.

Nope, you aren't! Give me Lochte or Peirsol any day over Phelps. To do what they're both doing with the "Michael Phelps Medal Watch" surrounding them just thrills me. Lochte was just adorable this morning on the Today Show.

Did anyone else catch when they announced that she would be going to SMU this fall? Interesting. Paging srmom....

If she decides to rush (SMU is deferred) I guess Kerri Strug can write her Theta rec!

I was too. I really hope they investigate that whole Chinese gymnast not being of age to compete rumor that has been going around. I understand everyone develops differently, but those girls aren't any older than 12 or 13. Some of the reporters were saying that the younger you are the lest fear you have of doing risky routines or being hurt, which I believe is true.

Yeah, I noticed that too!! I'd write her a pi phi rec!!! I hope she goes through rush, that would be great! I don't think she'd have any problems considering she's georgeous, intelligent, poised, a leader, I'd say she's pretty strong on extra curriculars:D

Maybe we can get her to write a recruitment story;)

srmom 08-15-2008 11:29 AM

EARLY this morning (I have a puppy which is worse than having a baby - crying all night), I watched the tennis match with Blake and a guy from Chile (I think Fernandez but can't remember). Anyway, in the last set, Blake was up 9 games to 8 and the Chilean was serving, score tied at 15 all. So, Blake hits this ball, the Chile guy is at the net, and the ball deflects OFF HIS RAQUET out of bounds. So, the referee calls it out.

Blake argues that the Chile guy's raquet hit the ball - it was clear on tv and the commentators were all saying it happened. Well, the referee just sits there and does nothing. The Chile guy is down at the end of the court with his back to the discussion (CHEATER, CHEATER PUMPKIN EATER!!!!) not saying anything.

Well, you'd hope Karma would come back and bite him in the butt, but NO, Blake, visibly shaken ends up losing not only that game, but is then broken and loses the match.

The commentator was shocked and made the comment that tennis is supposed to be a gentleman's game and the Chile guy KNOWS that he lost that point and should have said something, that that's the way it used to be done.

SHAME on him. Now, Blake is a big boy, and should have been able to refocus, but still, I just think that is such bad sportsmanship, and in the Olympics, you'd hope that people would act in a sportsmanlike manner.

Winning at the expense of integrity is just bad:(

I can see it now:

"Hi I am new to GC, but thought I would post my recruitment story. I am a little nervous for recruitment because neither of my parents were Greek.

Here is a little about me: I was home schooled, didn't have much time for volunteer work, but I did manage to win a gold medal in the Olympics. My school has 8 chapters, but if you know which one, don't tell... I am trying to be discrete."

In all seriousness though, good for her. She sacrificed her youth to follow her dream and perhaps she is just looking to be a "normal" 18 year old now. I wish her the best at SMU, and hope that daddy's expectations can "simma down" a bit.

No, he'll be on here bitching that his darling daugther got cut by the top houses and that those nasty actives didn't see how wonderful she was. lol Just kidding!!

she is pretty wonderful;) I think the houses would be fighting over her!

Unregistered- 08-15-2008 03:04 PM

I remember reading an article (that I just can't seem to find right now) that Nastia Liukin was teased in elementary school because of her name. "Nasty" was what all the little brats called her.

Shawn Johnson is a great athlete, no doubt about it, but IMHO she lacks the grace that Nastia had. One announcer mentioned that she has her dad's athleticism and her mom's grace and beauty, and she was really a delight to watch.

And her poor mother -- she couldn't even WATCH! No helicoptering there!
