Not to be a nitpicker, but where on Earth do people get these stats from?

I have heard the same about several sororities (ex: XYZ is the 4th largest sorority in the nation, or ABC is the largest sorority in the nation). I've seen them on FB groups, on Bid Day shirts, you name it.

Where does this info come from? Are there some super secret rankings I don't know about? lol. Or is it one of those "a bunch of people said it so it must be true" things?

where was this voting on the pin too? i'm confused.

I guess if I absolutely HAD to pick another, I'd go with the wonderful women of Gamma Phi Beta! The crescent moon is simply gorgeous.

I have also heard that Delta Zeta is the 2nd largest.

I also recall that during recruitment, I was told that the ten largest sororities were all located at Virginia Tech.

Awwww come on guys! She's just drinking the Kool-Aide. Let her drink it!

I've heard the same thing about Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Chi Omega. "Most beautiful badge" is not a fact, it's an opinion. It could be a fact that in some specific, cited poll XYZ's badge was voted most beautiful.

I am pretty sure Chi Omega is "largest" is in terms of active chapters and total membership. Delta Zeta is the second largest in terms of number of active chapters, but not in terms of total initiated members.

It probably wouldn't be that hard to find most of the chapter and total membership numbers. I'm not sure how accurate Wikipedia is (pretty close for Kappa) but it maybe on orgs' websites.

ETA: For the record, Kappa is at 137 chapters and 235,000+ total initiated members.

Right, but I don't want to derail...this is a nice thread.

Yes yes, sorry. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...;)

AZTheta 05-03-2010 05:02 PM

The most incredible Greek woman I know is a Delta Sigma Theta. Wow, just WOW at everything about her. I often tell her, "I want to be you when I grow up."

And because I'm crazy about every single badge, I would be thrilled to be a member of any GLO, simply because I have friends in almost every single sorority and have not yet met a sorority woman that I didn't care for. We are amazing, collectively, and I am proud of all of us and what we represent.

(Since I'm "happy and filled with delight to be sailing behind a Theta kite!" I have started a new search in addition to the opal badge search, to locate a kite that represents every GLO. So far I've found a panda, penguin, squirrel, dolphin, owl, frog, angel, teddy bear... and a shark. Lots of dinosaurs too. Love the shark but can't see that it quite fits anywhere, just wanted to mention it, it's way cool. I can just picture that shark kite flying high on a windy day at the beach...*cue JAWS theme*).

Not to mention, I think/hope we'd all choose our own sororities if it were a choice, but if some of these posters would read the original post...that's not the point of the thread.

It's a little sad if you wouldn't, right?!

AXiDMeesh 05-03-2010 10:21 PM

I would choose:

Zeta Tau Alpha because I love their colors and the crown, and the Zeta's I know are all super amazing girls. Also I like the one word nicknames, and that applies to Theta and Kappa as well :)

Gamma Phi because I love their letters.

KKG because of the key badge. Like our Quill, their badge is in a different state than most. I'm not a huge fan of the badges that have the letters stacked on top of one another because it always takes me a while to figure out what it says lol.

Pi Phi and Chi O have super cute nicknames.

Finally, my favorite color is green so Kappa Delta wins me over in that regard :)

Oh and ditto the turtles soooo adorable!!

ETA: This was my 500th post. I think I've made it out of newbie land lol

ASTalumna06 05-03-2010 11:03 PM

For purely superficial reasons, I would choose Kappa Alpha Theta.

I love the badge, the colors, and the way the letters look together.

I might also choose Zeta Tau Alpha because my cousin and one of my close friends are members, or Chi Omega because twins, who I used to work with and are the sweetest girls I know, are members.

honeychile 05-03-2010 11:13 PM

FWIW, I remember reading about the AXO pin as being the most beautiful. IF I remember correctly, it was a poll conducted by jewelers, and had several variables. That has to be at least 15 years ago, though.

Pirouette 05-03-2010 11:16 PM

Any of my legacies:
Alpha Delta Pi Every women from my father's family went Alpha Delta Pi except me, so it would have been nice to have that connection with them. Especially since now my sister joined.

Delta Gamma It really hurt my grandmother when she found out I wasn't going to a school with a Delta Gamma Chapter. She's been a huge part of my life and I would have loved to share that bond with her.

Delta Zeta I love my mother and grew-up loving everything DZ. I almost went DZ, but in the end, I knew I belonged somewhere else.

For their philanthropy (I love them all, but the top 2 that speak to me the most):
Pi Beta Phi As a 3rd grade teacher, I love Champions Are Readers. Actually, I love all their literacy philanthropies.

Delta Phi Epsilon Since I was a dancer my whole life through college, I've had a lot of friends struggle with anorexia (luckily I never personally had this).

But of course, I love my Sigma Kappa!

I'd say the same thing, except that for me, there are two of them! They are my personal heroes and mentors.

I don't think I could imagine myself elsewhere. I had choices and the options but what I picked is where my heart belonged!

IrishLake 05-04-2010 11:18 PM

*SIGH*

so i'm assuming the people who said they wouldnt go to any house besides their own (even though that's not an option in this game), wouldnt have gone greek at all?

I don't understand your question? I wouldn't want to go anywhere else! I love the group of girls and everything about it! I wouldn't want to go elsewhere if I could travel back in time!

IrishLake 05-04-2010 11:27 PM

*double sigh*

i pity the sister who would want to go back in time and NOT pledge to their house. Re-read the original post though. Pretend you go to a college that has every NPC chapter EXCEPT yours. So pretend you went to a college that had no AOPi. Then what?

You know Mr. SLU SIGMA TAU GAMMA Boy, you can leave my letters where they belong! Why don't you use your own for a change instead of stealing someone else's? Are you so ashamed of your little chapter at Southeastern? I know Hammond is a little town, but sometimes being a big fish in a little town is not so bad! Have they figured out yet that Mr. Ole Miss wanna be has been slamming Sigma Tau Gamma all over the internet talking about dumping them for ATO? If you don't go away, maybe I'll just give Jason a call.

Where the heck did that come from...??? Did we mean for this to be posted to another thread perhaps?

The other poster is a troll. I had originally posted something nice then changed it when I went to another thread that revealed the same poster as the former atoheadlines who had been banned.

Why did he get banned? Being a complete idiot and fail-master is not usually a bannable offense.

But yeah, SthrnZeta, the consensus seems to be that ao_cutie_pi5 = atoheadlines = southerngreek12.

Thanks for the clarification Mystic. I had seen atoheadlines and saw all that but I didn't catch on that ao_cutie was the same person so AOII Angel's response came out of left for me.

It's worth reading this thread to see southerngreek12's brilliance as he lets us all know he wants to ditch his current fraternity, transfer to "olemiss" and join ATO. You'll see he classifies AOII as the best sorority for small Southern school.

I'm not sure why he was banned except that he gives really bad sorority recruitment advice. They need to ban the ao_cutie_pi because he's not an AOII.

AZTheta 05-05-2010 09:55 AM

Well! I made a mistake, Angela, and I apologize. I should have been on my Ritalin when I skimmed the original post, but NO, I was not paying attention.

So I am asking for a Do Over, since I do not delete posts.

At 18, I think I would have pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma, for a myriad of reasons, chief among them being my mother's influence. But there was no chapter at my school; at the time we had eight chapters and I did not even know there were 26 NPC sororities.

Reviewing my choices then, I would have been happy to have received a bid from any of the following:

Anyone that offered me a bid! I know, I know, I see everyone's eyes rolling - but at 18 I was so excited and happy to be going through rush (that's what we called it) and I loved every house. Pollyannaish, perhaps, but I'd take my attitude towards life any day. Fun, fun, fun! I had a great time going through recruitment.

Aside: to the troll who is pretending to be in a sorority and is really in a fraternity - *frown* that is unexpected and Not OK. Please sit down and be quiet.

TriDLove 05-09-2010 09:49 PM

I love this idea!

I would have gone with:
Kappa Kappa Gamma - I love how the name sounds together and the key symbol is so adorable! The girls in Kappa at my school are unbelievably sweet and I loved them during recruitment.

Zeta Tau Alpha - gorgeous colors and I love the crown motif! Plus their 'crown' hand symbol is so cute.

Alpha Phi - the house I would have joined had I not found my heart in Tri Delta. My Aunt is an Alpha Phi and she instilled my love for the Greek system. Their philanthropy hits close to home for me and was something I would have supported relentlessly!

But ∆∆∆ takes the cake for me! :)

GeorgiaGPhiB 05-13-2010 01:36 PM

I love this!

If I was not a proud Gamma Phi I would be a .....

AOII, they just recently colonized on my campus and I loved everything about them. I love the open motto the ladies picked, "Live simply. Love Always."

or

Kappa Delta, just because!
