I thought the men had a MUCH better night last night than the girls had tonight.
|
Yeah, I agree.
I am liking Brooke White though. And I am with Simon... I really like what she did with that song. (still envisioning the video every time I hear it.... remembering staying up late to watch Friday Night Videos, since cable and MTV hadn't made it's way to my rural East Texas house by then....) |
Ugh...the 80s were such a fun time in music; why did everyone pick such slow, depressing songs.
And I hated Brooke's version of Love Is A Battlefield! That's a kick butt anthem and she made it whiny. |
I was hoping for someone to break out the Stevie Nicks or Debbie Gibson. No such luck. Everyone picked terrible songs. I think some of those girls really could've rocked "Let's Hear It For the Boy" or "Flashdance...What a Feeling." And I totally could've seen Amanda doing a great job at Stevie Nick's "Edge of Seventeen."
But, when you think about it, most of the contestants were barely out of diapers by the time the 80's decade came to an end (that's if they were even born during the 80s as there's many who were born in the 90s!). I'm guessing they probably don't realize how fun the music of the 80s was. |
I thought those were good cuts tonight, although I liked Aisiah (sp?). I would have been just as happy if she'd stayed in and the blond-Carly-Simonish one went home. I was VERY glad Chikeze stayed in over Danny (is that his name?). I think it's a really good Top 12, overall. I think David Cook is my favorite right now, though I don't really dislike any of them (for the moment :)).
|
I like David Cook, Carly Hennes...I mean Smithson, and Aussie Michael.
Funny how 2 of the three aren't even American. I don't care if Carly had a deal/record. Kelly did, too. Kelly had demos all over the place. I still have some of them on my ipod. The girl can still outsing everyone. David and Aussie just rock. I do want to smack David's emo-bang face every time he sings, though! |
Just starting to check in here. I don't start watching American Idol until they get the top 12. (I just can't take the awful auditions.) Once they do, I just listen to their performances on YouTube.
So far I'm finding the girls generally forgettable although I think the caliber of singers in general is going up. As for the guys, I really like David Archuleta and Michael Johns. They both gave me chills during at least one performance. All 3 Davids are pretty good. Jason Castro is puzzling. He has such a sweet, innocent face and personality but his voice needs some work. I think what's kind of appealling about him is his uniqueness. He has this folksy quality that's kinda interesting. I don't see him lasting though. When's it on next? Tuesday? Are they going to have famous guest "coaches" again and theme nights? I'm completely out of touch. |
Really enjoyed the show tonight, but I think it was partially due to the songs themselves. I have to admit this season so far has entertained me much better than I expected. I didn't watch at all last year, and hadn't really loved a season in several years. This season I am completely hooked.
Brooke has been my favorite for some time now, but David Cook blew me away tonight. I'm not much of a rock fan usually, but I really like him. Amanda, however, hurts my ears. I listened to maybe 1/4 of her song before I had to mute it. I do not understand why the judges seem to like her, at all. |
Okay, pretty good show this week. Loved, loved, loved the theme.
Best part of this week were the shockers... the average did great, the great did awful.. and shocker of all- Paula made sense! Who took our drunk Paula and replaced her with someone coherent? Now, on to the contestants: Top Marks from me for Chikeze (!), David Rocker, and Brooke. Chikeze, who knew??? David Rocker, "brought it" again! And for Brooke- I do really like Brooke's soulful voice, but fear what will happen when she has to abandon her Carly Simon inspired song file. Disco week? Eek! Carly also had a stellar performance, but I worry that there is a Daughtry-esqe elimination shocker coming for her at some point. Seeing as that a large majority of the voters are the 12-18 set, and I don't see that as her audience... hmmmm.... I worry that around week 6 we may see a much-too-early departure for her. I still do not get the Jason Castro kid. Just. Don't. Get. Him. Amanda Overmeyer- fire your hairdresser. Immediately. I can't hear a single note you sing because I am so disturbed by your tresses. David Hernandez and Kristy Lee... well, there just are no words. I am still so perplexed by both attempts, and just can not form complete thoughts at the moment. Bad. Very Bad. Nuff Said. Which brings us to Little David Cupcake. Simon was right. It was a colossal mess. Forgetting words? Unforgiveable. Pitchy? Say it ain't so! And the performance... very wedding singer. But, Cupcake will bounce back, and this was likely a good wake up call for him. But... like Brooke, it sets up some worrisome theme weeks ahead. Prediction for bottom 3: David Hernandez, Ramiele and Kristy Lee. Kristy Lee gets the axe. |
LOLOLOL!!!
Phenomenally well-said, Blondie! And freakin' hilarious. You summed up every single thought and opinion I had. (well, except about Brooke, she's not one of my favorites, I can't put my finger on exactly why, but she kind of bugs me) But co-sign on every other review. And Jason Castro's facial contortions when he "sings" make me want to throw my shoe at the TV. |

I agree about Kristy Lee and David H. When David was singing about dancing all I could think about is that he's an ex-stripper. I kept laughing. :p Ramiele is just... BORING. I've never liked her. I'm also not a fan of Sayesha. I think her big, big earrings keep distracting me from HER. I'm a huge fan of David Archeleta, but he was way out of his element last night. I think he was trying to do something different because Simon told him he needed to "lighten up" last week. I would have LOVED to see him sing "Yesterday." |
Leave it to some Beatles songs to separate the wheat from the chaffe. Interesting night.
My top tier for the night: Chikezie - Huge kudos! That was pure joy. :) David Cook - Great. Really powerful. I had no idea he was sweet and humble too. Carly - Of the rocker chicks, I liked her the best. Something about her annoys me but she sure can sing and command a stage. Brooke - Solid. Middle tier: Aussie Man - I LOVE his voice but he played it way too safe. He's capable of much more. Amanda - I don't know why but I just want to deck her. Yeah, she has a good voice but you can tell for a fact that she's watched The Rose and thinks she's Janis Joplin reincarnated. Let me tell you, girl, both Janis Joplin and Bette Midler could vocally kick your Harley-riding ass! Ramiele - Another person with a great voice who's playing it safe. Too soon to tell if she can pull it off. Bottom tier: David Archuleta - Huge screw-up last night. You'd think with his experience he'd make sure he knows his lyrics. Syesha Mercado - Great voice but she seemed so uncomfortable on stage. David Hernandez - Cheeeeessseeeeeeey. Jason Castro - I finally figured out who he reminds me of, Tiny Tim with a bit of really bad Cat Stevens. Can't wait for him to get the boot. Kristy Lee - PAINFUL |
I like David Cook the most. I had to look up his name to know what it was though -- that's sad. I otherwise call him the emo, flat-hair boy who plays guitar. He's a keeper though.
I like that Jason kid. The Hallelujah song really won me over (learned about that song during The OC years) and so I didn't find much fault with him last night and I enjoyed him. Can't stand crazy, ugly hair girl. As summer said it's very "skunk" like. Blah. Like Chikezie for the first time last night too. |
As a huge fan of the Beatles and Sir Paul, I was very concerned about last night's episode and was prepared to hate the entire thing just on principle. Would I break my TV set before the end of the show? It survived, but was hit with a barrage of pillows when Paula or Simon or whoever it was compared Carly to Kelly Clarkson and during Jason's performance. UGH already, can we just send Carly home now? She doesn't do a thing for me, and went with a safe-for-her choice.
Loved, loved, LOVED Chikezie! To be fair, I've liked him all along but he did a great job. Liked both David Cook and Brooke White and appreciate their respect for the songs. Syesha, Michael Johns, and Ramiele were tolerable. Missed both Davids (by choice), poor Kristy Lee is just out of her element, and I normally adore Amanda but didn't last night. |
I haven't watched it much this year, but turned it on just in time to hear Kristi Lee butcher Eight Days a Week. It sounded like she was trying to catch the musci.
|
David Hernandez
Well.... at least the tips in the strip clubs should increase for him.
On a separate note... what is with the waterworks from Ramiele every single week? That girl is really starting to annoy. |

I am glad David A got another chance! He is one of my favs as are Brooke and Carly! The rest just don't really impress me! Another one I cannot stand, Amanda Overmeyer! I will like that girl is growling and crying everytime she sings! I respect Rock, and I love my fair share of it, but I like to understand the words.... |
I can't imagine that David got less votes than Kristy. Her song was a hot mess while David's was just ok. I think the producers wanted him gone because of the stripper photos.
|
I wish they had just booted off all of the bottom three. I'm tired of all of them already. I can't believe Kristy Lee didn't get voted off (again). I couldn't even pay attention to her warbling overly "country" vocals because I was so distracted by the fiddlers on crack in the background - that was terrible!
|
I think Kristy Lee should have gone home.
I think David H. is very talented, regardless of his stripper past, and I was sad to see him go first. IMO, he has the voice to put out a pop album or a soul/r&b album and it would be very successful. |
^^^^Agree. Kristy Lee is awful
|
Dumbasses. Just dumbasses. Carly wasn't bad. Cook wasn't awful. But, you guys had the entire Beatles songbook and you chose THOSE songs?
Michael Johns or Carly, you should have done With a Little Help From My Friends I could have seen a number of people doing Get Back, with a rocking twist different from the original. Hello? Ob-la-di ob-la-da anyone? Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? Revolution (#1)? She Came in Through the Bathroom Window? C'mon guys. You have a wealth of songs and you chose crappy ones. |
^^^Good call, Michael Johns should definitely have done Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band tonight.
I loved David Cook and Chikezie tonight, Simon was harsh on Chikezie, but I loved seeing him do the bluegrass thing after tearing it up last week. He's got a lot more range than I would have thought. And I of course recognize that little David A. is incredibly talented, but he's such a shoo-in for a big record deal that I almost don't bother following him. I could still live very happily without the sunny girl (blonde) and the Castro kid with the horrible facial contortions. I'm not big on Carly either, again, she can definitely sing but I'm just not a fan of hers (just like last season with Katharine McPhee, sure, she can sing, but she bugged the bejebus out of me for no particular reason). |

I think David Archuleta is clearly the best, but beyond him I dig Brooke, Jason and David Cook. I also like Chikezie when he does the bluegrass thing. |
I tivo'ed it, I haven't watched it yet and I am kinda dreading it! I am sooo sick of the Beatles songs....I mean they are great and all but why a 2nd week?
|

It would also explain Brooke White's god-awful lump-of-crap called "Here Comes the Sun." I felt for her. It was like watching Elaine from Seinfeld trying to perform and dance onstage! Spastic! She was SOOOOOOO uncomfortable and out of her element. |
I thought Carly's performance was beautiful. You could tell she really connected with that song, and I love to watch that. I also liked David Cook and David A.
I thought Jason's performace was terrible - Paula was dead on with her comment that it seemed like a weird polka. I thought the last chick - what's her name? Ramile? - was bad, too. And Chikeze's arrangement tonight was weird and didn't show off his talent. |
Cant say I'm THAT familiar with the Beatles catalog but I just know they have better songs than the 11 picked last night.
Being that I'm only familiar with Blackbird(via the Dionne Farris version) and Yesterday I think Carly and Syesha did well. I think Chikezie was much better than the judges gave him credit for..at least he is the only one of the few who can actually perform. |

So... it's been a hard week for me.
First, I have been battling a stomach bug for about a week. No fun. Then, my previously sweet, compliant, willing, happy 15 month old decides this is the week to learn the word "no" and to use it as much as possible. Finally, my husband had call this past weekend, so I have practically not seen him since last Wednesday. Which means I have been a single-stay-at-home mom to a 15 month old rebellious twit, all the while feeling like I could puke at any moment. So is it asking too much for a bright spot in my week- my beloved American Idol- to bring some much needed sunshine? Apparantly. There I sat on the sofa last night, with my favorite blanket, my Sprite, and my crackers, hoping beyond hope for something to smile about. I should have known this would not go my way when the show opened with Randy yawning. Let's just say that starting with Amanda Overmyer's hair and following that with Kristy Lee's warbling voice did nothing to soothe my jittery stomach. Even the prospect of Little David Cupcake could not calm things down. Thus, I gave up after one song and went to bed. I could go back and watch it today, but it sounds like why bother? If there is one saving grace, at least we all know there are no Beatle songs left to sing. |

I think we are somehow separated at birth. I never got the McFever (bleh) last year and everyone thought I was crazy. I am now hearing the same shock when I indicate that I am not totally on board with this Carly chick. With Carly, there is some vocal precision there, but she just doesn't connect. I think the problem both of them have is there does not seem to be any "soul" in them. Not soul as in rhythm, but soul as in that which makes us more than 2 dimensional human beings. |

I've only watched about half of the show so far, but I'm already left with the following questions: Is it week two of "Lennon/McCartney" songs, or week one of "The Beatles" songs? I mean, if AI cleared 25 Beatles songs, there are still over 150 songs in the official catalog that could have been theoretically chosen--not counting Harrison compositions that made it to official release. Now, if it is week two of Lennon/McCartney, I'm still stuck trying to figure out when either of them wrote "Here Comes The Sun"? Anyone? Anyone? |
Quote:
This week, they opened up Harrison's songs, too. He wrote HCtS. So, it's week two of L/McC with Harrison's songs thrown in just this week. |
