Elaine-

Please continue to post your sister's rush experience. There are a bunch of this on this thread that have been with you since the beginning and would love to see where your sister ends up.

Auburnmom-

Can't wait for a Kate update! I'm glad that she's been invited back to Austria for prefs, I think you mentioned that she felt close to them in an early post.

Best of luck to all the ladies going through the final moments of recruitment at Auburn!

UGAalum94 08-12-2007 06:49 PM

Elaine,

It sounds to an outsider like your sister is having an amazing rush. It might not have been the rush that you wanted for her, but if she ends up happy, and with three pref parties to go to it sounds like she might, it is all smiles and roses (or squirrels and roses, if you are really lucky;)).

I just want to be clear that I don't want to limit what people discuss. I think the horror stories are as important as the happy ones. I just want to let the folks happy with their results enjoy their threads without a lot of second guessing about the evils of the process in the middle.

I agree.

i have been out of town and without internet service so i am furiously trying to catch up on what all the active pnms are doing.

first off, i am so sorry for the young woman who was dropped from recruitment. she doessound like a fine young woman who has a lot to offer some organization-i hope that she will brush herself off and find an organization where she will make lots of friends and not look back on what might have been. should she choose to enroll in cob opportunities, i hope that that works out for her. to her mom: i truly think that it is harder being a mom than a pnm. hang in there. your daughter will have her chance to shine at auburn.

to elaine, i hope that your sister has a wonderful time at her prefs. i am so sorry that her bff dropped out, but i am glad that your sis did not. how great that she received an invitation from one of her original favorites. when i suggested that you create a thread just for your sister and her friends, i did not mean to come across as bossy. i look at recruitment like christmas-i would rather have a lot of little presents to open(rush threads) than one great big one(combined rush threads)-so i was just trying to get my addiction fed! :)

auburnmom, i hope that your daughter has a wonderful time at her prefs. i can't wait for you to break the code, after all is said and done. thank you for starting this thread. also can't wait for an update!

oldrusheenowmom 08-12-2007 07:07 PM

Auburnmom?

I know she has received her preference invites, but I can't remember when the parties are and when bids are handed out- I know that I am being lazy and not going through the thread; I'm instead sure someone can give a quick reminder--

UGAalum94 08-12-2007 07:16 PM

I think they are preffing and ranking today. Bids at three tomorrow.

I normally don't ask people to stay, especially when they say that they're leaving, but I really do hope you reconsider. Your posts were refreshing and worthwhile to read because it presented a POV that we don't normally get around here.

Normally I don't read rush threads because I can't stand the excessive blowing of sunshine up the PNM's/parent of the PNM's ass. I like honesty and being real, and that's why I've enjoyed [surprisingly] reading this thread so far.

Best of luck to your sister and her friends.

The OP ASKED for other contributions to the thread--no way to guarantee that all of the contributions are going to be perfect and happy recruitment stories, particularly at Auburn. I'm just surprised that we have only heard about three recruitment stories at Auburn.....

AuburnMom 08-12-2007 08:03 PM

The more Auburn PNM’s; the merrier……

I wanted to take a moment to comment on the Auburn Rush thread taking a bit of a turn….

First of all, you are all right; I wanted it to be an all Auburn Rush thread and I did invite others to participate and I was happy when others started doing so. I am still happy that others are participating and I am looking forward to hearing Elaine’s sister’s ending along with WarEagle07 daughter’s ending. Also, I am looking forward to sharing the end of Kate’s story with you all!

Secondly, even though Elaine’s sister and Momto2Gals daughter’s rush didn’t turn out as well as they had hoped, I in no way felt that their stories diminished Kate’s. Actually, I think the fact that we’ve heard 4 Auburn rush stories on this thread and they’ve all turned out slightly different adds to the complexity of the thread and probably helps to balance the story and show what really happens at Auburn rush. I do however; feel bad for Momto2Gal’s daughter as I know she is hurting right now. Even though I don’t know her, my heart goes out to her! I don’t think she meant the things she typed to be as harsh as they sounded; I think she was in pain and was venting. And for those of you that commented about it would be hard for me to post Kate’s happy story in the middle of their sad stories, I will agree it was harder as I didn’t want to hurt their feelings; but I brought that on myself as I asked others to join and post their Auburn rush stories. :o

But that all said, I am committed to finish this rush story. Elaine I would be very happy if you would continue on with your sister’s story. WarEagle07, please update with your daughter’s story and if there is anybody else out there, it is not too late! Please feel free to jump in.

Army Wife'79 08-12-2007 08:13 PM

AuburnMom, you are one classy lady.
Good luck tomorrow, we are all excited to hear the outcome.

AuburnMom 08-12-2007 08:19 PM

amusing side bar for you all.....

So, as you know, I've been on this website posting my daughter's story for a week now. I have dedicated a good amount of my free time over this last week to either updating Kate's story or reading others.

I never told my husband what I was doing as I felt he would laugh at me (he already thinks I am stressing out way too much over this) and I was just letting it be my guilty pleasure! So, everytime he would come into the office, I would minimize the screen and be vague about what I was doing.

So, here's the part of the story that is amusing, he walked into the office about 10 minutes ago and asked what I was doing. Again I was vague in my answer. Then he looked at me oddly and asked "Are you having an internet affair I need to be aware of?" I laughed so hard; then we laughed so hard. I ended up showing him the thread. I thought it would be better that he felt that I was slightly obsessed with Greek Chat vs. him thinking I am cheating on him. :)

So, there is your amusing story of the day for rush!

Army Wife, I had just pm'ed the exact same phrase-- Again, Auburnmom-- thanks for showing class!!!

AuburnMom,

i am looking forward to hearing how things worked out for your daughter! Best of luck to her!

THAT is absolutely hilarious!

I do find it interesting to see 4 different recruitment stories from the same school and it does reflect how differently things can be perceived. One thing that I think is really fun about it is that 3 random GC posters who know women going through recruitment at the same school could conceivably have their loved ones ending up as sisters! AuburnMom and WarEagle07 could end up in the same parents' group too! How fun would that be?

Hasn't that happened in the past? And wasn't there one year where two PNMs found out after their reveal that they went to the same school and realized they'd actually been in the same recruitment group or something?

Anyway, I'm as anxious as you are, AuburnMom... if your daughter maximized her options tonight then barring some catastrophe, this could very well be your daughter's last night as an independent woman... and tomorrow will be the first day of her new life as a ___________ (go Ireland!) Can't wait to hear.

Yeah I think there were 2 PNMs at UCF last fall who were in the same group (it might've been Ocalagirl & jessXIca).

zta07 08-12-2007 09:07 PM

i just read this entire thread from start to finish and i must say good luck to all the PNMs (and kudos for engaging in this sometimes crazy process). i cannot imagine participating in SEC rush as i thought rush was a bit overwhelming at my not-so-competitive school!

best of luck and i hope for the best for everyone!

thank you for sharing these stories with us!

Well I mean, aren't we all having a bit of a love affair with GC? I totally know what you mean though, my boyfriend has definitely questioned me because of the amount of time I'm sitting on my laptop laughing at posts!

I'm so excited for your daughter! I think this will be the only thread I get to actually read the end of before September though because I'll be whisked away to work week and recruitment land on Tuesday!

Last update from Kate before 3pm tomorrow…..

I just talked to Kate tonight. She sounded happy and relieved (almost giddy) that the parties are over. She’s had a good time throughout but I think she is at the point where she’d like to know where she is going to be as of tomorrow afternoon (as her mother would also like to know!)

She maximized her options when she ranked the 3 sororities that she attended today. And here’s the cool part…. while she has a favorite, she says she could easily see herself being a part of any of the 3 sororities she preffed today. She said that whatever it says when she opens the envelope tomorrow, she will be happy. I think that is wonderful for her!

Bids are given out at 3pm tomorrow. If for some reason she doesn’t receive a bid, she will be notified by her Pi Chi tomorrow morning. If she doesn’t hear from her Pi Chi tomorrow morning, then she (and all the other PNM’s) will meet at 3pm for bid distribution. After bid distribution, they head out to join their new sororities. I believe they then spend the rest of the afternoon/evening with their new sisters.

So, approximately 19 more hours and we’ll know. She promised she’d bring her cell phone to bid distribution so she can call me and let me know where she is going! I can’t wait and I’ll update as soon as I hear.

WAR EAGLE!

That's terrific! I'm looking forward to learning about the groups she liked too.

Congrats Auburn Mom, your daughter is in the home stretch!

That is hilarious about your husband and the rush thread. If my husband (or my son) knew that I was writing a thread on son's rush, they would think I was nuts!!! I guess we moms take everything so close to the heart with our kids. That is why it broke my heart to read Momof2's posts.

But, this thread has been great to show all sides of the rush process. We just all hope that it ends well for the rushees.

Here's to keeping our fingers crossed for the rest of all the kids:)

Just a reminder that GC is very rarely an anonymous place. It's not hard to figure out who is who. For instance, for someone at Auburn, enough info was given that it wouldn't take long to figure out who is the daughter in question.

Haha, I just kicked my husband out of the room so I could read GC without him making fun of me!! I love these recruitment threads!! I am *not so secretly* hoping Kate goes Kappa - it sounds like any sorority would be fortunate to have her. I can't wait to hear!

That's good to hear. More PNMs should have such positive attitudes.

WarEagle07 08-13-2007 12:06 AM

Whew!

I do not know how tomorrow will pan out for my daughter, but I do know that as of right now she is relaxed and truly enjoying herself for the first time all week. The rest of the student population has begun to move into the dorms and all of the new people are providing a nice distraction from the stress of rush. I do want to say that it has been tough on my daughter to see rush not going so well for some of the people that she knows. There was one girl in her group that was released and several others who only had a few parties to attend. She truly does feel badly for these girls and wishes there was something that she could do for them. I cannot wait to reveal which sororities she visited for prefs. and (hopefully) which she bids! Tomorrow 3:00 sharp she finds out and I will post ASAP!

LaneSig 08-13-2007 12:45 AM

Okay, sorry to muddy the waters further: Is Momto2's daughter eligible for a Snap Bid? Since she was released and didn't drop out herself, is this still an option?

Yes. Actually, even if she had dropped out she'd still be elligible for a snap bid.

Wow! Reading this thread has been an exciting roller coaster ride for me.I LOVE IT!!
I wish the best for everyone and I am sooo excited, anxious on where Kate will be ending up.
I forget how addicted i get when rush comes around(no matter how old i am)
I will be here 3pm sharp:D

Soliloquy 08-13-2007 05:18 AM

I am anxiously awaiting the bid-day results for kate, as well as the decoding!

Good luck to the other relatives who have posted in this thread as well!

AnatraAmore 08-13-2007 07:45 AM

Good luck to the girls who I'm sure are eagerly awaiting their bids today!

WarEagle07 08-13-2007 09:16 AM

None of the moms who I am scheduled to attend bid day with have received a phone call from a tearful daughter, so we are guessing that we are good to go! Off to Auburn to have lunch with our daughters, and then to bid day! I am so excited for more than one reason; yes I am very happy for her to join a sorority. Mostly, I am thrilled that she has asked me to be with her on this day! Who knows how many times this will happen in the future once she is comfortable and spreads her wings. All I know is that her simple little request for me to come to Auburn to be with her today has given me more joy than I can express! I never knew how much small gestures towards mom and dad meant until I became a parent of a teen myself. A hug, and time spent together is priceless to me!

OleMissGlitter 08-13-2007 09:31 AM

I can't wait to hear the good news!

Hopeful_Bubbles 08-13-2007 09:33 AM

I'm so happy for all those lucky girls! Can't wait to get back home this afternoon to hear where everyone went.

Awwww, yay for no news being good news (and your remarks are so sweet, I'm 22 and I am so glad that I'm sick at home with my mom to make me feel better. Moms rule)! Here's to hoping your daughter and all her friends have found their homes this afternoon (and that you come back ASAP and tell us where) - I keep checking back hoping it's time, but sadly, it's not. Fingers crossed for all the PNMs whose stories we've heard here.

AWAwwww

ufpiphi 08-13-2007 10:19 AM

I'll be here at 3:00pm, too.
Or maybe closer to 4:00pm since we'll have to anxiously wait for AuburnMom to make it to a computer following distribution of bids!
Can't wait!

AUmom 08-13-2007 10:20 AM

Auburn sorority recruitment

There are 16 panhellenic sororities. I can tell you that the most popular ones are VERY VERY competitive. Auburn's recruitment usually starts with 1200 girls and only about 50 or so are kept for each sorority (that's l/2 of what they start with).

Yes, it is not uncommon for girls to quit their sorority before initiation (which is a must if you want to get into a different one) or they do not accept the bid. Accepting the bid and going through initiation make it nearly impossible to go through COB.

The sororities base their cuts on what the prospect can do for their group, their standing in their own community prior to coming to Auburn, what they are already involved in at Auburn (cheerleader, dancer, etc.), and how they do at Ice Water Teas. How is the girls personality and how does it mesh with the group?

Yes, COB is only for the sororities with openings (and there are always some openings in your lower echilon sororities).

Some are better than others (locally), but I won't go into that.
