FYI: The interview that Meredith Viera did with JK Rowling will be on the Today show tomorrow and Friday. It was during that interview that we learned who got the reprieve.

I saw the interview this morning, but my baby started cooing a little too loudly just as JK was saying what Harry, Ron and Hermione are all doing. I think (hope?) I heard her say Harry and Ron headed up the Auror's office, and Hermione was doing something with magical law. Did anyone see the interview?

Like ZTABullwinkle mentioned, the interview continues tomorrow morning (it started this morning around 7:30, so I'm hoping it will be around the same time again tomorrow). Then, there is a one hour special on Dateline(?) Sunday night at 7pm.

Oh, and about the names... I think someone said earlier that Rose might be a tribute to Harry's mom (sticking with the flower theme). I like that idea; then again, I'm pretty sure Pansy Parkinson wasn't named in similar honor, so who knows.

YES! i knew they'd be aurors!!!! I'm so happy that Hermione is a lawyer, that totally fits:) I feel like crying all over again now that I know that. :o

AlexMack 07-26-2007 11:30 AM

There's a video posted with the interview. I'll definitely have to try and catch the rest of the interview tomorrow.

You know, I'd love to know what happens to the Malfoys. I mean, we hate them through the entire series, but when Voldemort starts using Draco as a puppet, a bit of humanity seems to shine through, even with Lucius. I feel like one of Rowling's strongest messages was that a mother's love is stronger than anything.

lovelyivy84 07-26-2007 12:04 PM

So no notes on WHO the new Hogwarts headmaster adn DADA teacher are? Ah well, the rest of it TOTALLY fits.

MysticCat 07-26-2007 01:24 PM

If you want to submit a question for JKR's livechat on Monday, you can go here to do it.

FYI, 2:00 BST is 9:00 a.m., EDT.

I certainly could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if that's the reason for the name, since she JKR received the award in absentia.

Sorry I didn't know which book. However, think the controversy on her winning is stupid because while her books are read by more than the typical fantasy/scifi audience, her books, 7 excluded, are fairly good.

I was theorizing, I didn't say that was the definite reason for the name Hugo.

While it almost always goes to works of science fiction, the Hugo is intended to honor science fiction or fantasy. The controversy really had to do with the fact that the HP books are considered juvenile rather than adult fiction, and the fact that Rowling's immense popularity/notoriaty caused significantly more members of Worldcon (the voters) to vote than is usual. The feeling among some was that these "extra" voters knew little about the other nominees.

And I would say that her books, including 7, are much better than "fairly good."

I know. I was just saying I'll be surprised if that theory turns out to be correct.

FSUZeta 07-26-2007 05:02 PM

in the viera interview, rowling did say that she is considering writing an "encyclopedia" that will give us the answers to who is hogwarts headmaster, more detail into what ron, harry(aurors) and hermoine(law) do at the ministry of magic, etc., but she said that would be "in a while" because she wants a break.

i'd buy it!

i loved the book-my son read it in 12 hours as did i; daughter is reading it now-hubby likes to listen to it on cd. i was saddened at some of the deaths, but happy how things ended. she fooled me.

AlexMack 07-26-2007 08:14 PM

So what questions would you ask Jo? I'm curious.

Me? How does she feel about the Malfoys personally. Lucius is so evil but I wind up feeling a bit sorry for him at the end and the same with Narcissa and Draco.

Where are Harry and Ginny living, what was the wedding like, what's happened to the Death Eaters and 12 Grimmauld Place? What has he done with the Elder wand? Who's the new Minister of Magic? (It should be Arthur Weasley, he's such a good man!)

MysticCat 07-26-2007 08:49 PM

^^^ Good question about the Malfoys!

And didn't Harry say he was going to put the Elder Wand back in Dumbledore's tomb?

I would ask what the Dursleys are up to, and what Dudley saw/felt/remembered when he was attacked by the Dementor.

AlexMack 07-26-2007 11:44 PM

I asked my question about the Malfoys. Hopefully it gets answered. I've already had one character redeemed for me, I'm not sure I could handle liking another three slytherins.

He said it in a very round about way, but yeah I think he was putting the Elder wand back w/ Dumbledore.

AlexMack 07-27-2007 01:13 AM

Weird question, does anyone here read HP fanfiction, or even write it?

I don't but after reading the whole series ten million times, sometimes I hunger for more and I'm afraid to venture into the world of fan fiction for fear of cat porn.
I wish GDIs could see us like this-we're all supremely nerdy at heart. We really are. I love it!

christiangirl 07-27-2007 01:41 AM

^^^As a GDI, I can tell you there is a comforting feeling knowing we really are just the same, thank you. ;)

Yeah, Harry put the Elder wand back in Dumbledore's tomb and, if I'm not mistaken, Kingsley Shacklebolt became the new Minister of Magic. I can't remember where I read that, maybe in the interview hyperlinked above. I asked if Rose and Hugo were named after anyone and another question that escapes me at the moment.

ETA: I remembered--I asked how is George doing later in life now that his twin is gone.

SoCalGirl 07-27-2007 01:52 AM

I've decided that Fred haunts Hogwarts! He'd put the other ghosts to shame with his tricks. :)

christiangirl 07-27-2007 01:57 AM

LOL, and he and Peeves became best friends, occasionally teaming up with whichever new generation Weasley is at Hogwarts. :D

It's in the book that immediately after the fall of Voldemort, Kinglsey Shacklebolt was named acting Minister of Magic. There's nothing in the book about whether that was made permanent, though.

LOL. I would hate to think of Fred as a ghost, though -- unable or too scared to "move on."

DaemonSeid 07-27-2007 11:09 AM

I wonder if Harry cashed in on the Death of Voledmort ( I still wanna know how they disposed of the body)

and what about Rita skeeter???

SydneyK 07-27-2007 12:57 PM

I wonder what Harry did with all the money his parents left him. Did he set it aside for his kids' Hogwarts tuition (or is it free)? Did he make some kind of donation, or set up some kind of scholarship for, I don't know, maybe Quidditch seekers?

lyrelyre 07-27-2007 01:56 PM

I want to know what happens to Umbridge.

If he was smart he collected off the interest

UGH!!! i HATE HATE HATE her, i mean, i'd like to know how she ended up, but that women was like the epitome of evil, (besides voldemort and the death eaters, but to me, she was just as good as)

christiangirl 07-28-2007 06:14 AM

With Harry, Ron, and Hermione revolutionizing the Ministry, Umbridge is probably retired early to save her the task of being acting bludger at the World Cups.

I wonder what job Ginny got? She doesn't strike me as the type to be a homemaker like Molly.

dvs-dz 07-28-2007 10:24 AM

If she still has a job within the ministry, then I think Umbridge will be demoted to something like Magical Cat Inspector, since she seems to have a real liking for cats. Can't you just see her as a crazy old cat lady?

I think Ginny may work with the Aurors, specifically working with jinxed objects since she experienced that with Tom Riddle's diary.

ASUADPi 07-28-2007 11:33 AM

I watched the interview with JKR on Thursday and Friday and she said that she would have Ron & Harry be Aurors and 'clean up' the department and Hermoine would work like in the Ministry's "rules & regulations" (she gave an exact term but I cannot think of it for the life of me right now).

She also said that Hogwarts headmaster/mistriss would be someone new (during the epilogue portion of the book).

The conclusion of the interview will be on Dateline NBC on Sunday, it's 2 hours, all devoted to HP.

Pike/PhiDeltmom 07-29-2007 08:10 PM

Just finished watching an interview on NBC with J.K. Rowling. She stated that Harry and Ron would eventually completely revamp the Auror Department at the Mininstry of Magic with Harry as its head. Rowling also said she saw Hermoine working in the Dept. of Law Enforcement at the Ministry.

I am pretty sure they will post the video, since the have posted the past ones.

AGDee 07-29-2007 09:54 PM

I sure hope they post it. I meant to tape it and forgot.

ASUADPi 07-29-2007 11:10 PM

I took my little sisters to see the movie today and boy was it different watching this movie again, after having read book 7. When I saw Mad-Eye, Lupin, Tonks and Fred I was like "damn it y'all die in book 7". Then with Voldemort I was actually picturing the scene when Harry essentially kills him. It was like having a different perspective on the movie after having read book 7, does that make sense?

JenMarie 07-30-2007 12:39 AM

Interesting read...

Daniel Radcliffe Talks 'Deathly Hallows'

I could have swore someone asked a question re: Dumbledore's "look of triumph" after Harry returned from the GoF maze further up thread. Because there was this:

Quote:

Any other surprising bits of closure for you?
Another thing has confused me for so long. It was in the fourth film script, and it was in the book as well, of course. When we rehearsed the scene, it was the scene in which Harry had come back from the maze, and his blood has gone into Voldemort and so on. I could never understand why there was a line in the book that said, Dumbledore looked at the scar on Harry's arm with — I think the phrase is something like, He looked at it with something close to triumph in his eyes. I've never understood that. I could never get it. No one could. No one knew. And of course, it turns out it's because Dumbledore realized that as well as Voldemort being inside Harry, Harry's blood was now inside Voldemort. Therefore his mother Lily's blood was also inside Voldemort, which obviously plays a huge part in [Deathly Hallows]. That explained a lot to me.

christiangirl 07-30-2007 02:01 AM

I want to know if things are weird with Emma and Rupert knowing that they're gonna have to kiss in the distant future. ;)

There is some great fan fiction out there....and some not so great...

For novel length fanfiction go to Schnoogle@FanFiction Alley a great gateway to some really good fiction.

Trouble In Paradise/Paradise Lost by AngieJ is great...this is a classic and fannon....
The Paradigm Of Uncertainty/The Show that Never Ends (I think there may be more) by Lori is great (again another classic)
Slytherin Rising Series by JL Matthews is great, original/fannon tell the cannon HP stories from a slytherin original character's perspective, here is a bit of a twist, Ginny (Ginerva :D) is in Slytherin. JL stopped writing for a bit, but is back on the horse and is in Year 4. I have stopped reading the series cause I want to read all 7 years in big swoop, but that could take years. So I call it pacing now.
Cassandra Claire had a great HP story out there, but she took it down off the internet after her original fiction was published.

These are all "classic" HP FF, so for new stuff you would have to look around FanFic alley....I can not recommend new writers.

christiangirl 07-30-2007 06:11 AM

It's happening. The HP spinoffs are coming out of the darkness...I can see the whites of their authors' eyes in my foeglass. We all knew it would happen, but I don't think I expected it this soon. I don't think I want to read it, it might make me want to throw something.

The Alchemist: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel

You do realize that there really was a Nicholas Flamel right? and this book was published in May 07. JK used famous, real and mythical characters on the Chocolate Frog cards.

Pike/PhiDeltmom 07-30-2007 09:19 AM

No, I didn't realize that there really was a Nicholas Flamel. Thanks for sharing the article.

I read the whole msscribe story on journalfen and cassie claire came up a lot. All that drama over harry potter fan fiction, I ask you! What I can't stand is the degradation of characters into slash or just overtly sexual stories. Is that really necessary? But people getting passionate about Harry/Ginny or Harry/Hermione was cracking me up. Especially because there was stalking and wars over it!

AlexMack 07-30-2007 10:51 AM

BOLLOCKS!

I just caught the very end of the live chat. Now I have to wait till tomorrow to find out if she answered my question.

www.bloomsbury.com/harrypotter

ps. Who's getting both copies of the different covers of the UK version? That would be moi! My mum rules. They're selling it for 5 pounds in England! Outrageous considering what I paid!
