This thread will haunt me for the rest of my time on GC....

never the less I am starting to find the show more and more outlandish and offensive as weeks go by

Tri Delta's response to ABC Family's new show, "GREEK."

Since early this year, we have been in close contact with entertainment reporters and producers of the upcoming "GREEK" series, and have offered Tri Delta as a resource for future story lines and segment plots that are more positive and representative of the Tri Delta sorority experience. We know that many of you have seen promotional trailers for the series, have visited the "Virtual Rush" show Web site, or have heard about the show through word-of-mouth. As a proactive organization, Tri Delta Executive Office staff and our PR firm are closely monitoring the marketing of the show and will track the topics covered in each episode, and are prepared and ready to respond as necessary.

I think that is awesome! What I always notice is how Greeks always go on the defensive when Greek life is highlighted by non-Greeks. We have gotten defensive about t.v shows, books, mere references to greek life all worried about how they will give us a bad. We're so concerened about how non-Greeks are going to respond we take a defensive role and allow them to dictate to us how we should be the result...we are too politically correct and are almost absurd as how far the defintion of hazing has gotten.

I think rather than taking a defensive role and allowing others to define us we should be taking more of a proactive role to define ourselves. Why haven't we written our own fiction and non-fiction books for the best-sellers list. why haven't our orgs gotten together collectively to come up with our own television show. Rather than blocking what could be good publicity we should be helping those who are interested in Greek life. If we're going to be talked about we may as well be dictating the dialogue. However, I do not think we should completely run away from the sterotypes...like it or not most often there is a slight bit of truth in those sterotypes. why lie and act like we don't party..we can control the diaglogue and show where the sterotype has gone a little too far and show what else we do rather than get defensive and block all dialgue on Greek Life. They aren't going to understand us if we don't share with them.

Okay, I know that I should be against the show.. and watching the commercials made me think ... way to endorse the stereotype. But after watching it, I like it. Sure it is exaggerated but this isn't a documentary. It's a tv show and it's more so about the lives of the particular characters. Come on who doesn't want to see Cappie and Casey get together? And how many Rusty's do you know? IF we protest this show, why shouldn't we protest Animal House.. because that is way worse.

banditone 08-08-2007 01:58 PM

I don't find it offensive at all....

Well, this last episode was offensive in that a guy like Rusty could never get a lil cutie like whats-her-face.

O_Phi_A_Bekah 09-22-2007 04:09 PM

I like the show! Reminds me of my college years.....I am "old", married and have 2 kids so some of these posts offend me, not the show.

I LOVE this show. It's nothing like my experience so I can enjoy it like I enjoy all the other shows on TV that sensationalize real things in my life. Like... every show ever made! I'm a TV writing major... and I would kill for an internship on this show. I hope it lasts a long time!

Its not the evil that some of the responses would portray it to be...and like everyone said, its not good enough to last too long.

as an alum, I agree. Things were exaggerated, but that's TV. I've never seen a show focused on high school or college that was accurate, since they all seem over the top.

However, I think some of the spirit is there. I'm not happy with the portrayal of alot of the sorority girls as backstabbers, but nothing is perfect.

I full admit i'm sort of addicted to the show:p

Kyle,
The best way to influence a network's choice of shows is:
1. Boycott the show...keep the viewer numbers down.
2. Write formal letters to each sponsor of the show. Let them know you will not purchase their product/service if they continue to sponsor inferior media programs.
3. Write a formal letter to the network stating your reasons why you refuse to watch the show.
4. Do not purchase the products of the program's sponsors.

The above was in a consumer advice column in our local newspaper.

i love this show. and the show isnt going to persuade anybody to get drunk all the time or be slutty. we decide that for ourselves. and if evryone is concerned about setting a bad example for younger viewers its not abc familys fault. parents should be monitering the t.v is they have a problem with it. also, the show doest show all the good thing sororities and fraternities do. and it definantly doesnt show what stupid stuff students outside the greek system can also do. so this petition to cancel the show will ggo noo where. greek is an amazing show and the majority of viewers whove seen the show agree.

one800thekiller 09-09-2008 05:24 PM

It is a show, it is make believe. It isn't going to make anyone thing badly of greeks in general, it is for entertainment purposes.
The fact that a petition to have it taken off the air was even started makes me worry that people in todays society are way too ignorant of the law? There is nothing anyone can really do to get the show taken off the air.

It isn't going to effect greeks in a negative way. It isn't going to change potentials opinions of the organizations at your school...and to be honest if it does, do you REALLY want to pledge someone who is so easily persuaded into believing things they see on a TV show?

PANTHERTEKE 09-09-2008 05:30 PM

THIS THREAD IS ALMOST A YEAR OLD.

I love this show and so does my daughter. As a matter of fact, yesterday the cast was at the FSU Bookstore to encourage everyone to register to vote online and offered assistance in the process. My daughter had classes at the scheduled time of their appearance, but some of her sisters attended and were able to take pictures of Cappy for her..lol... I think this is a positive example of the cast members of this show. If you don't like the show, turn the channel.

How would you like us to petition to get the shows you like off air?

Well, I must admit that I am addicted. I am constantly checking VZOnDemand for the first episode of the new season! (I can never remember the night the show comes on)
