ETA: Since what year has a Founder's Day message been published in The Angelos by the National President?

This is all so wonderful! I love reading about our sorority's history and facts that they don't teach you during your new member period. Unfortunately I can't answer many of the questions but I just wanted to let you all know that I am having a great time reading all of this! :)

Glad you're having fun, kdizzy! :)

Just a guess, but I'm gonna say 1913, when plans were made outlining the first celebration of Founder's Day (even though FD was first recognized in 1911, I don't think there were any actual celebrations until 1913).

I am going to guess 1921.

This is a fun game! I think that I am going to ask for Ordinary Miracles as a Christmas gift.

Leslie Anne 11-27-2007 05:13 PM

Not quite there yet. It's not 1913 or 1921.

The answer is in Ordinary Miracles.

ETA: Thanks for the photo of the kaiserin rose, Sydney! :) Where did you learn that?

I actually have a copy of the Sorority Handbook by Ida Shaw Martin (from my college roommate's grandmother's stuff, if you remember that story). That's where I found the open motto thing and also the specific type of white rose. There's lots of really cool information about all kinds of orgs in there.

Since it's probably unlikely that there are many of those floating around, you might be interested to know that it's online (6th ed.) on google books. Here's the link if you're interested:

the motto

The original open motto was, "Let us pursue the honorable." Not knowing Greek, I wonder if ta kala diokomen could have several translations, and therefore it has morphed (for lack of a better word) over the years.

My father, who is from Greece, said that the motto actually means "we pursue the good things."

It definitely was gussied up to our current translation.

BTW, my father used to tease my chapter sisters about their pronunciation. The Southerners had that twang, "Taw kawlah deh-oh-koh-men" which bothered the heck out of him. But hey, he had an accent too! :)

KDAngel 12-01-2007 12:55 AM

Leslie Anne -- I know I'm slow to look at it, but that whole chapter naming thing you posted was amazing. Thanks for sharing!!

What's the answer to this, Leslie Anne?

kdizzy 09-25-2008 06:51 PM

I wish that this thread would become more active again! I loved hearing all of the trivia and history about Kappa Delta. I am a HUGE nerd when it comes to KD history...but I am not ashamed to admit it!!

Katmandu 09-25-2008 07:17 PM

Ask away! :)

Here's my (belated) Founder's Day trivia bump! It's been almost a year since Leslie first asked this question... what's the answer?!?

Leslie Anne 11-01-2008 11:25 AM

OMG. I'm so sorry. I can't remember where I found that tidbit of information but I'll try to find it today and post the answer.

Okay, I'm back and I found the answer. A Founder's Day message has been published in The Angelos by the National President every year since 1931. :)

Anyone want to post a new question?

Leslie Anne 11-03-2008 02:16 PM

New Question!

To get things started again I'm tossing out another question.

When was Kappa Delta's first convention held?

SydneyK 11-03-2008 02:19 PM

1903?

Leslie Anne 11-03-2008 02:39 PM

Ding ding ding! You are correct. Nice goin' Sydney. :)

SydneyK 11-03-2008 04:37 PM

Thanks, Leslie Anne.

Next question:
What scholarship is awarded to a KD pursuing a graduate degree in the field of health care?

kdizzy 11-03-2008 05:37 PM

Kailash, Mona, & Anila Jain Scholarship!

KΔEtaMu 11-07-2008 01:11 AM

Hey everyone! so I just read this whole thing because I am super interested because I am one of the founding sisters of my *soon to be* Eta Mu Chapter at GCSU! we will become an official chapter November 15 and I am so excited :D
It is really fun learning random tidbits of KD history!

Correct, kdizzy! You're up!

kdizzy 11-09-2008 10:57 PM

What were two nicknames bestowed on Sara Turner White while she was in school?

Just interested 11-10-2008 10:37 PM

Pig was one

That is one of them...does anyone know the other one?

SydneyK 01-07-2009 01:10 PM

Bump!

What's the answer, kdizzy? (I don't recall any nicks other than Pig for Sara. I'm stumped!)

kdizzy 01-11-2009 11:48 AM

Sorry! I hadn't been on here in a while...

Her other nickname was Sagie! I don't have a copy of Ordinary Miracles handy to reference it, but that is where I read it.

Shellfish 01-12-2009 12:56 PM

Aw, rats! I've been lurking here for a little while and finally thought I'd break out the Ordinary Miracles, register, and get that second nickname out there.

Hi, everyone.

Leslie Anne 02-26-2009 04:43 PM

Hi Shellfish! :)

Well, let's get this thread going again with an easy one:

The Alpha Trunk was in use until what year?

SydneyK 03-02-2009 03:48 PM

Good one, Leslie Anne.
(That's my pat-on-the-back-for-the-good-post BUMP, just so ya know.) :)

WCsweet<3 03-02-2009 07:31 PM

I want to say it was 1912.

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner! :D

WC can post a question or really anyone can. No need to get one right first. Just jump in!

WCsweet<3 03-03-2009 02:27 AM

When was the charter cup retired?

Shellfish 03-03-2009 01:40 PM

1976, I think.

New question: Three documentaries that appeared on TV in the past year or so featured Kappa Deltas. What were they?

kdizzy 03-03-2009 01:42 PM

I know that Made is one of them...but I don't know the others!

However...there was a KD on the Price is Right in November/December!

Leslie Anne 03-03-2009 08:46 PM

Was Thin one of them?

Shellfish 03-05-2009 10:00 AM

Yes, Thin is one of them. I'm going to give the other answers because I noticed that they will be on TV soon if you want to catch them:
Brett Killed Mom is on HBO Family very early Sunday morning. The narrator, Brett's sister, was a member of Pi chapter.
Bama Girl is on IFC on the 17th and 18th of this month. The homecoming queen candidate with the support of The Machine is from Zeta chapter.

I didn't know there was an episode of Made about a KD, but then, I gave up on MTV when it stopped being about music. *shakes cane at youngsters*

Thanks for pointing this out, Shellfish. I've always been intrigued by The Machine, so I just might have to watch this!

Leslie Anne 03-06-2009 09:56 AM

New question:

Two Julias played a large role in Kappa Delta's early years. One is obviously founder Julia Tyler. Who is the other one?

Shellfish 03-11-2009 08:53 AM

Julia Vaughan.

Next question: Who was the first national president?

Leslie Anne 03-11-2009 09:08 AM

Genevieve Venable? (off the top of me head)

Shellfish 03-11-2009 09:58 AM

Actually, the first woman elected was Charlotte McKinney, but she was unable to serve because of personal matters, so Genevieve Venable was the first actually to fill the role.

New question: Who was sometimes incorrectly counted as a founder? (And it's not Eunice Spiers.)
