Apparently they don't condone spelling and grammar either.

Note: My boss is a Chi Phi, and it holds true for him as well. I always have to have my coworker translate his emails for me. They can get worse then Earpish.

And your uncaring post is what? That is not Earpish, that is Earp Speak, thank you!

Oh, please be careful as there are spelling and typo police on here, can you guess who they might be?

I also wish that the poster was closer to my age or mine to hers!:D

THAT was not a typo. THAT was gibberish.

AKA, I really have no idea what you said. I'm sure you're intelligent, but that doesn't mean you're right. If you'd like to clarify your problems, I'll respond more appropriately.

As for my feelings on black women, I don't know what you're talking about. Once again, clarify if you wish, and I'll get back to you.

I wasn't correcting someone's typo or simple mistake, like you. It seems like you do that alot.

I don't care if someone wants to type in ebonics, i'm not going to "correct" them.....but I think you should consider how you sound if you are going to try to insult someone. Thats why I made the comment.

I think you can agree that the Chi Phi's post was more then a "simple mistake", and especially humorous, being that he was trying to defend the integrity of his fraternity. Typos don't bother me, except, as you're saying, when someone is trying to be insulting and screws it up, however, ridiculously third-grade looking posts do. Most people who post here have at least a highschool diploma, it would be nice if posts here reflect that.

I see your point...but it is also a message board. I mean, he spelled that "taht" and left a couple letters of the ends of a couple words. Big deal.

Mac'
I agree with you.
IIRC a few weeks ago something along the lines of "This is a message board, get over it. If you can not get over it, get off of it" was posted towards me when I posted something that ruffled a few feathers.

This thread was always about how women, specifically minority women, are portrayed and treated. Chi Phi was simply used as an illustration.

If you read the article that he posted, you will see that it goes with the REAL topic.

Well, here's some resolution in this case...And it does appear that the New Member Educator was involved...

Frat pledges get probation in porn case
UGA students displayed photos

By BY ANDREA JONES
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 09/19/06

The seven University of Georgia fraternity pledges who showed pornographic pictures to passers-by at the school's student center have agreed to serve a year's probation, complete community service and organize a program on sexual harassment for their frat brothers, according to an agreement reached late last week.

The fraternity involved, Chi Phi, was placed on probation for two years.

University officials initially suspended Chi Phi for the Sept. 6 prank, where seven students and a visitor photographed people's reactions as they showed them photos from Black Tail, a porn magazine that features black women. The case was forwarded to UGA's Office of Judicial Programs, which reached the agreement with the fraternity and students on Thursday.

Chi Phi President Matthew Hughes has said that the chapter is "embarrassed" about the incident, which he said was not sanctioned by the fraternity.

According to the agreement: "Chi Phi fraternity engaged in shared responsibility for violations when an appointed leader (Pledge or New Member Educator) condoned behavior exhibited by seven other students which, by definition, violated the university's policies pertaining to sexual harassment and caused a disturbance or disruption on campus."

The students, who all admitted guilt, will complete 25 hours of community service by December and work with each other to teach Chi Phi about the school's Anti-Discrimination and Harassment Policy and the definitions of sexual harassment. The older fraternity member received the same sanctions.

The fraternity will replace its pledge program with a "new brotherhood program" by February, the agreement states.

It's not the first time Chi Phi has faced sanctions.

The fraternity was placed on a four-year probation beginning in 1995. In 1999, the university continued the probation after finding the fraternity at fault for a keg party where a member provided alcohol to an underage pledge. The fraternity also got in hot water for allegedly hazing Chi Phi pledges who were visiting from Georgia Tech in 1998 but was cleared of that charge in 2000 after witnesses failed to come forward.

It goes back a long time ago. I still dredge this old thread up when I have had enough of the lunacy.

Ladies men?

Basically what I am saying is these Chi Phi pledges, have no "charisma" with the ladies. If they did have "charisma", they would us images from "Playboy".

I think they were asked to humiliate themselves by showing pornographic images of certain kinds of women. I find that rather pathetic to uplift a manhood.

But then, what would have the school done if these same pledges showed porn pictures from a "Black Beefcake"-type magazine? Or a pre-opt transsexual porn magazine?

See the issue is these hazing acts could get worse and worse.

The other issue is that Black women generally are dehumanized from any erotica. You RARELY observe Black women as the main character in a romantic movie. The number of Black woman characters in these types of movies can be counted on my hands. Then of those movies, mostly all Black women fail to be of dark complexion. They are of lighter complexion and usually able to pass for caucasian.

So what does that do to the self-esteem of young Black girls growing up? The "cute" girls have hair attachments of long straight blonded hair, when most of OUR hair is "nappy" and "Afros"...

So the fact that these young Chi Phi pledges were told to show pornographic pictures of nude Black women from a smut magazine in order to join this particular IFC fraternity, is well in my book, about these little boys not having the "balls" enough to stand up for what they think is right and true. Then falling under pressure to fit in.

Where is the greater philathropy here? Is this what Chi Phi about?

And if history is any teacher, it is only a matter of time when the next group of pledges will start to dehumanize other women...

shinerbock 09-19-2006 05:04 PM

Well, I'm still unclear how this really relates to me, but I'll throw in my opinions anyhow...

Nobody is saying it wasn't stupid, but I just don't see that its really racist. Black pornography probably has a slightly different humor/shock/intrigue value, for example, the little white kid in road trip hooking up with the big black girl. Its just kind of a less than ordinary thing for white people to be consistantly attracted to black people, which makes it more intriguing probably. I'm not sure if black people feel the same way about white porn, not sure. They probably could have used something like transexuals, but I really think that would gross the pledges out, and they probably didn't want to be at all associated with something like that. I'm not justifying anything, just trying to follow what little reasoning went on...

As for the image of black women, I somewhat understand your point. You're not gonna see many black women in romantic comedies, because they are targeting a majority audience. However, you do have "black movies" starring them, which white people usually skip. I think the audiences are very different, and thus they're targeted in different ways. I really don't think most black people will identify well with um..."must love dogs," nor will white people identify well with "insert black romantic comedy here." As for the image sought by young black women, I obviously have no idea about that. I'm not really attracted to "nappy" hair, but then I doubt they're hoping for me to come try and start a relationship with them. I imagine a lot of whats attractive is derived from what black men and the media desire, and I don't think that is much different from what white women experience growing up.

As for the Chi Phi pledges, I agree that pornography dehumanizes women. I also think they do it to themselves, although they probably had factors which led them into such things. Thus, I think pornography in and of itself can be harmful to women, but I don't think what these kids were doing was sexist.
