SmartBlondeGPhB, you can't count on techies for style now! ;) I was in Nordstroms today (or was it Macys? BellSquare was crazy!), and they had a wall full of Crocs...and now, they have those little buttons/plastic thingies that you can put in the holes.

Were they gemstones? Kind of like treasure troll bellybuttons? Cuz that's what I saw somewhere, I forget where?

Saw this darling look in an ad for Mimi Maternity. Can you say "fashion victim?"

That's for knocked up 16 year olds.

Hot off The Runways for Fall 2006: Teen Pregnancy. Backpacks are so last year, diaper bags are in.

Speaking of yucky 80s stuff...I work at an advertising agency, working on an account that produces weekly flyers for a major chain of stores. I saw an outfit on a little girl that caused bad 80s flashbacks....the model was wearing a matching top and LEGGINGS (pink and white to the point that they looked like pajamas) and a JEAN SKIRT. I can't believe the outfit ended up in the flyer. What kind of parent would even buy that?!
Someone for whom the 90s and new millennium never arrived.

For real, that sounds so 80s, that I started humming the guitar intro of "Beat It".

"is a child of the 80s"

sdsuchelle 08-20-2006 06:55 AM

Fun fact: my friend saw a shirt (for females) in some mall store that said "it's not easy being easy."

.....?

WOW...just wow.

Maybe that girl is suffering from varicose veins (I heard they're common in pregnancy, but I never got them) and those are really support hose???

I also hate how in maternity mags, their models are like 3 months pregnant. How the hell does that help someone pick out clothes for when it looks like they shoved a prize winning watermelon in their pants?? Things don't fit the same when your 3 months pregnant as when you're 9 months pregnant...and I went to work right up until the day before I delievered, so it's not like I could hide all day in pjs.

This is a popular style where I live, but only in the September/ Oktober timeframe. Everything's cuter with beer goggles on, right? No, all the liters in Germany couldn't help this outfit. ;)

tunatartare 08-20-2006 01:10 PM

A guy who wears Lederhosen would probably find those outfits incredibly sexy.

Carnation... somehow I doubt that you have those things in your wardrobe! You let your tummy hang out and don't wear a bra? You wear clothes with "bitch" written on it? I kinda doubt it! :)

Although I agree with much of the advice on this thread, most of it applies to those in their 30's, 40', 50's and beyond.

You can be stylish at any age.

KSUViolet06 08-20-2006 02:50 PM

REPEAT:

JUMPERS ARE NOT OK. DARTED, LACED, POLKA-DOTTED, WHATEVER.

THEY ARE NOT OK.

33girl 08-20-2006 03:02 PM

Re Crocs, the first place I saw them was in hospitals on the staff. I've got no problem with that, as they are supposed to be super comfy and those people are on their feet all day (and they do kinda go w/ the scrubs). But if you drive to work and proceed to sit at a desk all day, you do not need Crocs. I feel the same way about men wearing turtlenecks who aren't skiing - especially since most of them seem to have a ton o' chins.

Jumpers are not OK. Unless you're in a Barely Legal porno movie and they're mini-jumpers.

As heinous as some of the 80's flashback stuff is, I'd STILL take it over the layers of flannel shirts and knit caps or the all black "look at me, I'm a monk" look from the 90's any day.

I just saw Crocs for the first time yesterday, but fortunately.. they were on a group of kids younger than 8. I can't imagine anyone older than that wearing them unless you're cutting your lawn or weeding in the mud!

I am glad to see those pointy Wizard-of-Oz shoes gone. I love the riding boot look. There is a pair from Prada to die for. Got a spare grand? That's what they cost at Neiman's.

I plan on wearing my Crocs in between rounds at recruitment this year to save my freaking feet!

Adults should not collect dolls. Unless you're a granny with a weird fetish or they are for your daughter-- as in your actual, living and breathing daughter with whom you interact on a daily basis.

/Guilty of buying too many toys for my dog and calling one of them her "puppy." Please send me to the looney bin.

blueangel 08-20-2006 03:54 PM

What is wrong with adults collecting dolls? Personally, I don't like dolls.. and I always drew mustaches on them as a kid! But, doll collecting is very much like collecting art work. There are some priceless pieces out there made of bisque and porcelain.

Some of the more famous doll collectors are:
Morgan Fairchild
Demi Moore
Britney Spears
Marie Osmond

and.. did you know that John Wayne was an avid doll collector when he was alive?

Ok, that reminds me of the SATC episode where Stanford hooked up with the doll collector and ended up breaking one. Hmmm, Stanford and the Duke. What a funny mental pic!

Ever worn a pair? Ever even tried on a pair? I think it's quite odd that you've never seen a pair on anyone older than 8. You should get out more.

Again, I don't give a shit what people think of crocs, thank you very much. I will still wear them every day to work and my feet will thank me.

I get out lots, thank you very much.

No, I've never tried a pair, because, personally, I think they're ugly. If you want to wear them, this is America.. you have the freedom to do so... just as Scandia has the freedom to wear jumpers if she wants to...and I have the freedom to wear those Prada riding boots once I take a second mortgage out on my house! :D

Jimmy Choo 08-20-2006 04:31 PM

I'm so happy Tippiechick said something! While Crocs may not be pretty they are so freakin' comfortable!!! Can you wear them in every workplace? No! But if you need to run an errand or you can wear them to work, go for it!! Next to my Rainbows they are the most comfortable shoes I own. Granted they are ugly as sin but when I worked retail I can't tell you how great it was that Crocs were covered under our dresscode! :D

I don't know what troll bellybuttons are, but these decorations are called Jibbitz:

Crocs are ugly as sin, but they are comfortable. I think if you work on your feet they're a safe bet so long as they're approved by your workplace. I don't own any, but a friend of mine made me try hers on after I made fun of them. She just likes them for comfort.

Still wouldn't buy a pair, but she's the earthy-crunchy type and they work for her.

Scandia 08-20-2006 07:13 PM

Well, I have FIVE American Girl dolls. And I love Kirsten's dirndl. And I like dirndls and bunads in general- but I would not wear them except as a costume.

And why would Kirsten be wearing her traditional Swedish dirndl with those sandals? She should be wearing thick socks and brown boots with it.

"my Kirsten right now is wearing the mint green work outfit"

There's absolutely nothing wrong with adults collecting dolls. There are way worse things a person could be collecting, honestly.

AUDeltaGam 08-20-2006 07:19 PM

I think she's referring to the elastic bands wrapped in big mounds of unattractive fabric, like this-

There's a difference between collecting Madame Alexander collectors' pieces and even Collectors' Edition Barbies within their boxes and keeping dolls that are marketed solely for play (ie, American Girl). The former, which is what the people you listed primarily collect, is marketed to adults; the latter to 8-year olds.
