Student Accused of Hot Iron Attack
Date: Thursday, August 25, 2005
By: Associated Press

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - A college freshman was charged with assault after authorities say she beat her new roommate with a hot clothes iron, hitting her so hard she fractured the young woman's skull and broke the iron into pieces.

The 18-year-old victim told authorities Sharronda Barkley,  also 18, attacked her on their second day of classes after accusing her of putting a hidden camera in their room.

Heather Haase suffered a skull fracture, bruises, cuts and a burn on her arm in the Tuesday morning attack, university police said.

Barkley told officers Haase injured herself when she fell out of bed and hit the iron, according to a police report. Barkley was being held on $25,000 bond Thursday. A judge ordered her not to return to Bowling Green State University or have contact with Haase.

Freshmen arrived last week at the university, 20 miles south of Toledo. Haase and Barkley are both from small towns in Ohio.

"You have two young ladies that go off to college with an expectation of obtaining an education and hopefully having a good time, and they're not here a week and one of them is severely injured and the other ends up in jail," University Police Chief James Wiegand said. "That's not the way it's supposed to go."

N.H. Doctor in Hot Seat Again Over Remarks

By J.M. HIRSCH
Associated Press Writer

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- The state is investigating a doctor accused of telling a patient she was so obese she might only be attractive to black men and advising another to shoot herself following brain surgery.

"Let's face it, if your husband were to die tomorrow, who would want you?" the state Board of Medicine says Dr. Terry Bennett told the overweight patient in June 2004.

"Well, men might want you, but not the types you want to want you. Might even be a black guy," it quoted him as saying, based on the woman's complaint.

The board said it also is taking a second look at a 2001 allegation - deemed unfounded at the time - that Bennett told a woman recovering from brain surgery to buy a pistol and shoot herself to end her suffering.

Bennett made national news last week when the complaint from the obese woman became public without any mention of the racial comment. But Senior Assistant Attorney General Richard Head, who leads the state Consumer Protection and Antitrust Bureau, said Tuesday the woman complained about the racial remark, not about being lectured.

In a telephone interview Tuesday from Rochester, Bennett denied any wrongdoing and defended his message to her, saying he has read polls that say black men prefer overweight women.

Bennett added that he is angry the board is reconsidering the 2001 complaint.

"That patient is currently in a nursing home completely demented, tied to a chair drooling on herself and doesn't recognize anybody," said Bennett, 67. "She was in pretty nearly that condition at the time she filed that complaint."

Bennett's lawyer, Charles Douglas, said his client is being attacked by the board, which, by its own rules, does not discipline doctors for bedside manner.

"If a patient does not like the message, go to another doctor," Douglas said.

Head said the 2001 complaint is being considered as part of a review of Bennett's overall adherence to medical ethics. The state Consumer Protection and Antitrust Bureau investigates complaints against doctors, though the board decides how to act on them.

Head said privacy laws prevent him from disclosing the women's names.

The board can fine, reprimand or suspend doctors. It also can revoke doctors' licenses or require them to attend classes or treatment. A hearing is planned Dec. 7.

Earlier this year, Bennett rejected an effort by the board to resolve the latest complaint. The board wanted him to admit he had made a mistake and to attend a class on medical ethics, which he called "touchy-feely school."

Bennett previously was cited by the board in 1995 when, as part of a settlement to avoid discipline, he admitted lying on his 1992 and 1993 medical license renewal applications about being denied hospital privileges. He was fined $1,000.

Ohio High School Has 64 Pregnant Students

CANTON, Ohio - Thirteen percent of the female students at Timken Senior High School in Ohio are pregnant. High school senior Monica Selby thought she would be busy this year planning for college, not preparing for the birth of her first child.

"I've been crying every day and every night. I keep on blaming myself for this," said the 18-year-old Selby, who is six months pregnant.

She cries about starting classes this week at Timken Senior High School with a bulging belly, about the emotions of planning an adoption, about becoming part of a statistic that has snagged the nation's attention: 64 of Timken's 490 female students — 13 percent — are pregnant.

The statistic at the school in the heart of this old steel city contrasts with a decade of declining teen pregnancy rates nationwide. But teen pregnancy experts say the problem is not exclusive to Timken High.

Experts, parents and students themselves struggle to explain why such pockets of high teen pregancy rates appear. Are teens getting appropriate sex education? Do they have access to birth control and are they using it consistently? Has the stigma of unwed motherhood lost its edge?

"This might be a school that is forthright with its problems while others are not," said Jay Green, chairman of the Education Reform department at the University of Arkansas. "But this is a widespread issue."

Green wrote a study last year for the conservative New York-based Manhattan Institute for Policy Research that found 20 percent of urban teenagers have been pregnant, compared with 14 percent of suburban teens.

Urban teens as a whole don't use birth control as consistently or often, according to his research, and often have less to lose financially and socially than those in the suburbs.

But Green couldn't say whether those factors applied to Timken. The school of about 1,000 students draws teens from across the neighborhood and economic lines in the state's ninth largest city.

Eric Wilson, 18, who works at a hot dog shop a few blocks from the school while making plans to get his GED and caring for his 2-year-old son, said the spotlight on Timken is magnifying an old problem.

"My mom had a kid when she was in school and now I have a kid," he said. "It goes back to how you were raised. Down here, it's not looked too down upon because a lot of parents had kids when they were kids."

Last school year, both high schools in the city's district reported 55 pregnancies. Ninety-nine pregnancies are expected in the district this year, most of them at Timken, where expecting students get six weeks of maternity leave.

"This has gotten to horrible proportions. I wish I knew the answer to why it's happening," principal Kim Redmond told the city's daily newspaper The Repository. Redmond did not return several messages left by The Associated Press.

Joanne Hinton, whose 16-year-old daughter, Raechel Hinton, is eight months pregnant, said she believes the school's abstinence-based sex education program isn't enough.

"It's time to take the blinders off and realize that these kids are having sex," she said. "Obviously, abstinence is not working. If we have to, just give them condoms."

Abstinence-based programs have been growing nationwide at schools over the past few years. In Ohio, the Bush's administration and the state's health department have awarded $32 million in grants to Ohio agencies for abstinence education since 2001.

Hinton stresses that she doesn't condone teenage sex and that her daughter doesn't fit the mold some may think pregnant teens come from: The Hinton household has two loving parents with a strong relationship who asked the straight-A Raechel "45 times a week if she was having sex, doing drugs, drinking. We were constantly checking on her."

Raechel, who plans to return to the 10th grade at Timken after delivering and completing an adoption, said many students are sexually active and need more information about birth control.

"It can happen to anybody no matter who you are, not just bad girls," she said.

As a 32-YO whose biological clock is winding down fast, I am getting very tired of this "Just Another Girl on the IRT" bull****.

Here is the gist in the order they appeared in the papers:

1) On Tuesday, a newborn boy (alive) is found in an air shaft. The 18-year-old mom is arrested.

2) On Wednesday, another baby (dead at least a year) is found in the same air shaft.

3) On Thursday, police announce that the 18-year-old is the mother of both babies.

4) Today (Friday), the girl's father is charged with raping her and fathering both babies.

TTT/Babyperson dies after mother throws him in dryer

http://www.wdsu.com/news/5482076/detail.html

BOGALUSA, La. -- A mother was booked on a charge of first-degree murder for allegedly placing her 3-month-old son in a clothes dryer and turning it on.

The infant had third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body and suffered blunt-force trauma to the head, the St. Tammany Parish coroner said.

Police Sgt. Darryl Darden said Lakeisha Adams, 18, called police to her home on Monday to report that someone had killed her child. When officers arrived, they found Jailand Adams on a sofa. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Darden said Adams admitted during questioning to putting the infant in the dryer and turning it on, but did not say why.

Adams also has a 1-year-old child who was placed in state custody, police said.

If convicted, Adams faces death by injection or a life sentence. The first-degree murder charge is mandatory under Louisiana law because the victim was under age 12.

I won't say what's really on my mind, but here's an idea. What they need to do is make her squat down and wrap her arms around her legs; next, they need to tie her up with duct tape all around, including her mouth, cram her into the dryer and turn it on, and see if she likes it...wait, the dryers not done yet.

Father questioned after children found dead in blazing car

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The bodies of two young children were found in a burning car Sunday, and police suspect their father set the blaze, officials said.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered the bodies of two children in the sport utility vehicle on a downtown alley, said Brian Humphrey, a fire department spokesman.

Their names and ages were not immediately released.

"There were two individuals that were placed in a car -- two kids -- and the car was set on fire," police Sgt. Lee Sands said.

How could you do that your own kids? Put them in foster care, giving them up for adoption, let Big Momma raise them....something! But to set them on fire in a car leaves me speechless. This may sound terrible but I hope that demon of a father at least gave them something to knock them completely out so they wouldn't feel thing as he burned them to death. :(

Something similar happened in Charlotte a couple of weeks ago. Father had the kids for the weekend. Made the kids keep calling the mom all weekend. Dad spoke to her saying which of her co-workers would help her mourn their deaths. SHe left work and found the apartment where Dad lived set on fire. I think he shot both of them first and then set them on fire. :(

Up In Their Grills

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0410062teeth1.html

Feds fail in bid to seize dental ornaments from accused drug dealers

APRIL 10--Federal prosecutors last week tried to reach into the mouths of two accused drug dealers and remove ornamental "grills" affixed to the men's teeth. Arguing that the gaudy "cosmetic dental appliances" were evidence of ill-gotten gains, investigators convinced a Tacoma judge to sign a warrant authorizing their seizure. In a March 29 affidavit supporting the seizure, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent stated that grills were "symbols which drug traffickers purchase to portray their status in the criminal community." The affidavit, a copy of which you can find below, apparently convinced Magistrate J. Kelley Arnold to order the grills (which can reportedly cost up to $25,000) removed from the mouths of inmates Flenard Neal, Jr. and Donald Lewis. But when lawyers for the men protested the seizure of the grills--which are permanently bonded to the teeth of Neal and Lewis--Arnold issued an April 4 stay of his order, because removal "would unduly compromise their dental health." Since the prosecution's seizure demand was filed under seal, defense attorneys only learned of the government action when Neal and Lewis called to report they were about to be transported to a Seattle dentist for the extraction procedure. ATHENS, Ala. That'll teach them for being unfaithful.
Seems police in Athens charged a local woman with domestic violence for clobbering her husband and another woman on their heads with a can of Raid bug spray after she found them together.

Police said a -- quote -- "nosy neighbor" called the woman at work on Friday and told her husband was at their apartment having an affair with another woman. The woman left work and went home where she found the two together.

Officers said the unnamed woman who was struck needed stitches for a head wound, and the husband was also cut but didn't require medical treatment.

26-year-old Cornelia Cottrell Smith of Athens was arrested and was released from the City Jail after posting a one-thousand dollar bond.

CINCINNATI, Ohio (AP) -- The foster parents of a disabled 3-year-old boy wrapped him like a cocoon and left him for two days in a closet, where he died while they attended a family reunion, a prosecutor said.

The couple made several attempts to burn Marcus Fiesel's body and concocted an elaborate sham to cover up the boy's death, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Tuesday.

"Marcus was wrapped in a blanket and wrapped in tape with his arms behind him -- and this was not the first time," Deters said in announcing additional indictments against Liz and David Carroll Jr.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - A woman admitted to smoking marijuana daily with her 13-year-old son to reward him for completing his homework. Amanda Lynn Livelsberger, 30, pleaded guilty to several charges Monday and will be sentenced Nov. 27.

The boy told police that he was required to do his homework as soon as he got home from school, and then was allowed to smoke marijuana with his mother, according to court documents.

I was talking to a Soror yesterday whose friend (also a Soror) is a social worker. How about Social Worker Soror's co-worker had a client who the judge specifically said DO NOT SEND THIS KID back to the parents. What does coworker do? So sad.

My child advocacy professor and I were talking about a case in Newark, NJ where the foster parents were starving four boys. The oldest was 18 years old and only weighted 48 pounds. They had children of their own but they were fine. Nothing but being sick in the head can explain why people do things like this.

MONTREAL - Sentencing arguments will begin in November for a woman who followed in the footsteps of Lorena Bobbitt, the Virginia woman who gained infamy in 1993 for slicing off her husband's penis.http://creditboards.com/forums/style...ault/blink.gif

Andree Rene's weapon of choice was fondue fuel.

Following an argument in April, 2001, the woman set her boyfriend's penis on fire as he slept.

The 52-year-old man suffered third-degree burns in the pelvic area and on his chest. He spent a month in hospital.

Rene was found guilty of aggravated assault last year.

Sentencing arguments begin Nov. 21.

It's not clear why so much time elapsed between conviction and sentencing.

The maximum sentence is 14 years in prison.

The Crown attorney said he will ask for a jail term, but wouldn't elaborate on how many years in prison he will seek.

Rene remains free on bail until sentencing.

Legal analyst Steven Slimovitch said Rene could avoid a jail sentence, unless she acted with premeditation

Hearing stuff like that fuels my desire to be a foster parent someday. I've always wanted to adopt or serve as a foster parent because every child derserves the feelings of security, love, and just knowing that someone is definitely in their corner. The check has nothing to do with my ambition that I've had for a few years now.

Woman Thought Teeth Would Just Fall Out

POSTED: 8:16 am EDT September 14, 2006

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania mother is behind bars because, police said, her son's lack of dental care was her fault.

Survey: Poor Dental Care: Abuse?

According to a local dentist, the 5-year-old boy has just eight teeth left and will need to be on a special soft food diet. The dentist said the child's tooth decay was so severe, it was criminal, and police agreed.

Dr. Nicholas Prusack said the nerves are exposed in several places.

"This is the X-ray showing the rotted teeth of the 5 year-old victim, and 12 of them so infected they had to be pulled," Prusack said.

Investigators said the damage was the result of the boy having never seen a dentist.

Now, his mother, 43-year-old Erneida Resto of Bethlehem, Pa., is charged with endangering her son's welfare.

Northampton County, Pa., children and youth services began investigating Resto in February when she took her son to a dental office in Salisbury Towsnhip, Pa.

That is where Prusack performed the surgery, saying the boy was in so much pain he could not eat.

"It is probably one of the worst cases," Prusack said.

Prusack was so concerned that he notified authorities, who said the boy had been complaining of headaches and pain in his mouth since the summer of 2005. :( :(

According to court documents, his mother said she knew her son was hurting, but did not take him to a dentist because she figured his baby teeth would fall out and the problem would fix itself.

Prusack said if he hadn't removed the boy's teeth he would likely have ended up in the hospital within six months.

He said the boy is now left with only six teeth on the bottom and two teeth on top and has a long road ahead.

"He's not going to have all of his permanent teeth, and for the next 10 years chewing food will be a problem for him," Prusack said. :(

Restohas been sent to Northampton County Prison under $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 22.

The boy is now in foster care, officials said.

The foster care system....

I've been working as a Foster Care Coordinator for about 2 months now...all I can say is sooooo many people are in it for the money....it varies from agency to agency but on average foster parents can make up from between 1400 to 2000 per month per child if the child is therapeutic (which means they have behavioral or emotional problems) in addition to this the kids get Medicaid for their health care, some recieve SSI, (which the fosters get), and agencies like my own pay for any extras for the kids like dance, eye glasses, birthday parties, etc.....so if you do the math fosters with several children can be making ALOT of money....THey may not all like me but I am hard on my foster parents.....I mean you telling me you didn't have gas money to take your foster child to an therapy appointment is not ok because you're making like 1800 per month for that child...especially if the child is in DSS custody because then DSS may pay the family additional room and board....don't get me wrong there are many families that are foster fams to help kids who need it, and these kids often have no one, but some people see it as the lastest hustle...

if you are interested in becoming a foster parent it can be a very uplifting experience knowing you're helping a child unable to help themself..the children's stories would REALLY break your heart:(

Sadly, before I read the Pennsylvania part, I seriously thought this story was going to be about my step-sister-in-law. Her son ended up in the hospital because he broke his front tooth, and she never got it fixed, and since her kids drink Mt. Dew and eat candy from 6am-9pm his tooth was starting to rot...  You can't make this stuff up.

(LMAO about you thinking it was your step-sister-in-law) Seriously, children are a 25/8 job. Yes, 25/8 because it's so much work you somehow add another day and hour to do it right! Anyway, I really think that people should have permits to bring children into the world. It's sad when you have to have a permit to fish or hunt, but any fools with the right "tools" can go and make a baby. :(
