. . . meaning absolutely no disrespect to Gamma Phi Beta or Dr. Brown, the word "sorority" did exist before Gamma Phi Beta. Sir Thomas More used it in his writings around 1530. Granted, it was never as common a word as "fraternity" (which had a long use among religious communities prior to its use for what we think of as fraternities), but it when he suggested it in the 1870s for Gamma Phi Beta, Dr. Brown could have been drawing on a knowledge of More's writings. Of course, he also could have been completely unaware of the previous use of the word and simply did what someone before him had done -- gone back to the Latin sororitas and anglicized it in a manner similar to fraternitas. |

Interestingly, the same dear Dr. Brown assisted Alpha Gamma Delta and we are a Fraternity.

im not sure if this has been said already, but i live and go to school in the state of Nevada, where brothels are a legal thing, and if your sorority house holds more than 12 girls, you legally have to have a house mother.. which is essentially your madame. I know that is NV law.. but im not sure about any other states.

Ohhhh right. "There are no brothel laws relating to sorority houses in any state" actually means "There are no brothel laws relating to sorority houses in any state but Nevada."
How silly of us to forget that. |

LOL @ this thread being 10 pages of people saying "but MY school really does have a brothel law" and people saying it's fake. Then the same people saying "but MY school is special."

Well I'm finished with my last clinical internship on Friday, and all I have left is a thesis. However I'm looking at not being able to pay rent by June if I don't get hired like... tomorrow. I have high hopes for a grant-funded position I applied for but no idea how fast the position will get filled. And I have a hope of some part time relief RA work at the residential facility at my current agency but that's not steady either so... yeah. Mostly good, but the stress is rolling on in. |

OK I skipped a few pages so if this was already covered, please forgive me.
From what I was always told, NYC does still incorporate brothel laws, but this is also included for Frats (male prostitution anyone?) Frat & Sorority houses are illegal in NYC and there are absolutely none within the 5 boroughs- although that does not mean there isn't room for them, especially in Staten Island. While some of the larger schools may have floors for specific GLO's, its rare. I tried looking it up to find out what the actual reason is and I can't find anything. Does anyone know whats up with that? |

So then what is the reasoning for no sorority or fraternity housing in NYC at ANY of the schools here? |

They prevent more than a specified number of unrelated people from living together, but that includes bands, cults, Justin Bieber fan clubs, you name it. It has NOTHING to do with prostitution or brothels. http://www.snopes.com/college/halls/brothel.asp http://www.snopes.com/college/halls/brothel.asp http://www.snopes.com/college/halls/brothel.asp http://www.snopes.com/college/halls/brothel.asp |
This is NYC...10 people will cram themselves into a 1 bedroom if they want and the city doesn't do anything about it.
As far as $ goes, thats one thing, but people always find away around that. Its just a shame that schools like NYU, Columbia, PACE, and other major schools in and around the city dont offer the same opportunities that Long Island or NJ- 20 minutes away, do. I didnt say that it was definitely due to brothels, I was just stating that is what 95% of Greek life in the city thinks and I was trying to find out what the actual reasoning is. No need for yelling or being nasty, Im just trying to discuss this like an adult. |

Everyone thinks they are illegal. Im trying to find out the real reason that there are no frat or sorority houses in NYC...the way you see them in places like Long Island or New Jersey. |

"Everyone" is an idiot. And you keep acting like the locations posted here are mythical just because you don't know about them. There aren't any sorority houses in St. Louis proper either. Why? Because of a lot of reasons: cost, no strong housing tradition for sororities, location of universities to appropriate real estate, etc. Brothel law is NOT one of them. Never has been, never will be. |

Everything boils down to brothel laws. Don't hate.
X: Hey, sorority sisters, you all never call me anymore. You wanna come by my house for dinner and some drinks? Y: Uh...nah...that crazy brothel law. Cops might think we're getting cash for ass. |
