HBCU Students and Alumni

Greetings HBCU Students and Alumni...
Where do I begin with this story. It was NOT until the end of my junior that a top notch college was a consideration for me.I mean I felt that I could get into any college,if I worked hard for it,but I had to re-focus on my education. One school I had went to took my mind off of my educational goals. The school I am at now and the people I am around have encouraged me to strive for EXCELLENCY.Most of the colleges I had considered were HBCUs,no particular reason, they just were.I was really focused on Washington University here in STL,but when I talked to one of the women at my old job(she attended a HBCU)I saw the beauty of HBCUs.She was telling me that it is nice to be around people like you, same color, same motivations, and same goals. The way she put it was AWESOME,which struck a new interest in my consideration for a HBCU.I do understand that the world is NOT all black, but it is nice to be enriched with your culture during your first experience in college.

*** All in all,I know that I MUST do what is BEST for ME

My questions to you all are:

- Why did you choose a HBCU?
- Which HBCU did you choose? Why?
- What are the GOOD and BAD advantages of attending a HBCU?
- What advice would you give to anyone seeking admission into
a HBCU?

miss priss 08-31-2003 08:27 PM

1. I chose my school because at the time I heard it had a good pre-engineering program in conjunction with Georgetown.

2. I chose Alcorn because....

a. I got a scholarship.
b. The other schools didn't "recruit" me ...in other words I sent in my ap got accepted (with a scholarship) but that was it no phone calls, etc. :(

c. It was hype at the time.

d. I loved the comradery when I visited there.

e. It has a very big and beautiful scenic campus...one of the prettiest I have ever seen. All the trees had the sorority/fraternities colors and names painted on them (guess who had the biggest tree ;) ) and the sidewalks were designed in that particular orgs colors, logos, pics, cartoon characters etc. Just beautiful artwork!

f. Very good programs, small classroom sizes (important for learning), and help when needed (sometimes lol)

3. I'll start with the bad..

BAD...

1. Although it was mostly black, it needed more nationalities then. Now we're seeing a rise in other races.
Note: Non-blacks please apply, we don't bite.lol We'd love to have you. HBCU-means founded by blacks for blacks at a time when blacks couldn't go to school anywhere else. Now, and even then, there is a open door policy for all people. Education is NOT a color but a way of life!***stepping off my soap box***
2. FINANCIAL AID!!!! They are just too dayum slow!!! ** thinking "we ain't got no mo' green beans"

GOOD...
1. Lasting friendships
2. Good times
3. Precious Memories
4. Knowing that when you see another alum make it you can stick your chest out with pride
5. the games, the band, the MEN!!!! :D
6. Other intelligent black folx with the same goals you have
7. Network(ing)
8. Job placement with companies who hire minorities
9. Leadership training
10. Approachableness of staff, faculty, etc.
11. the food!
12. the greek system
I could go on... better stop now! :D

RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH! At least take the Black College Campus Tour before you make any judgements based on what you "heard". There are some very good colleges out there black or white. Know that you are helping to preserve history....to me it is not about where you go but what you do when you leave! (they teach you that @ ASU)

sorry for the long post! :D

Good question

I am neither a HBCU student nor an alumni, but I'll like to offer my perspective

I grew up in St. Louis in a Black neighborhood and attended a Black high school--Sumner. Thus I knew what it was like to be around people who looked like me, etc. My parents felt that I should attend a non-HBCU to learn how to deal with White folx. :D I went to SIUC.

My daughter was born and raised here in Minnesota. I felt it very important that she attend a HBCU to counter her experiences here. She went to Howard and it was the best decision.

Although she had excelled in the schools here, there was always that question of whether it was because the White teachers had lower expectations. At Howard (and the same can be said of all the HBCUs) she wasn't that token high achieving Black girl but one of nothing but high achieving Black students. Excelling there took on a whole new meaning especially when the professors expected you to excell and didn't coddle you or let you get away with less then your abilities. At the same time they instilled in her a wonderful sense of her Blackness and the richness or our history and culture.

Wonderful1908 09-01-2003 12:56 AM

1 & 2. I always knew I was going to an HBCU both my parents attended Langston in Oklahoma and it was a tradition to go there. However I narrowed it down to Clark or Prairie View, neither I knew much about. Then all the sudden I considered Southern. I had a boyfrined in high school whose brother attended and I was like I am going there. To me a HBCU is like a family member who gets on your last nerve but nobody outside your family can say anything bad about them. Plus I met my husband there the BEGINNING of freshman year by the union 8 years ago, and we have been together ever since.

3. I LOVED Southern!!!!! It took a lot to get use to Louisiana and the South being from Cali, but I loved SU!!
Advantages
1. The people wanted you to succeed even when it didn't seem that way.
2. The diversity of Black people.
3. The atmosphere
4. The networking
5. The social lessons in survival
6. The friendships and bond with alumni
7. The greeks, the band the football team
8. Bayou Classic

The BAD
1. Things run by Black people have a tendency to..... ahhh!
2. Financial aid! Why my financial aid counselor was arrested for a work study scam!
3. NO SENSE OF URGENCY IN IMPORTANT MANNERS!
4. Lack of organization

ALL in ALL the Bad can be traced to number 1 :p :p

HOWEVER I loved my college experience! I loved all the the bad:
"the computers are down....."
my financial aid papers are lost
my housing is gone
"What do you mean I should have taken this class?"
the water is out for a weekend?

and the good

1. My probate for Alllllpha Kaaappa Allpha Sorority
2. The band (my husband was in the band)
3. The club
4. I hate Grambling!!!
5. The Union
6. The fight song
7. That good old refund check!

I could go on forever, and homecoming is coming up. I would reccomend a HBCU to anybody, I hope my son goes to Southern. The memories are a lifetime!

serenity_24 09-01-2003 06:32 AM

Going to an HBCU was my only aspiration. I'm from Nashville, TN by way of Atlanta, GA so I grew up between the Atlanta colleges and universities and Tennessee State, Meharry, and Fisk. We went to every classic every step show every everything when I was growing up and I couldn't see myself not a part of that when the time came. Plus, I was always in majority white schools from K-12 so I was ready to be with my people.

I spent the summer before my 12th grade year visting HBCU's everywhere. I fell in love with Howard. I knew I was going there because I got a shcolarship. Well, a few days before move-in my mom called to find out the directions to the particular dorm I would be in because we had not gotten anything in the mail. To our surprise:rolleyes: Howard had no record of me ever applying, let alone receiving a scholarship. All was not lost because my mother took the liberty of sending in an application to Fisk U. behind my back. That turned out to be the best thing she could have done because the accepted me and I got a scholarship and I got a couple of grants from the state so my refund was always fat. Two weeks after the semester started at Fisk, I got an award letter from Howard showing my scholarship and all, but I was so in love with Fisk that I turned them down and I never looked back.

HBCU's don't vary much in the "Good" and "BAD" categories. Plus if you do choose an HBCU, you'll come to find that the "BAD" turns into unforgetable memories that you and your classmates and possibly future sorors can sit around and laugh about for years.

As for the last qestions posed. Follow the advice of some of the other posts. especially RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH.

In closing know this: when you go to an HBCU (especially Fisk:cool: ) you are among some of the smartest minds in the world and they all happen to be black!

My questions to you all are:

- Why did you choose a HBCU?
Honestly, I just wanted to attend college in Atlanta. I wanted to get out of CALI and go down south.

- Which HBCU did you choose? Why?
SPELMAN. I just decided to go. I changed my mind everyday. Never had dreams of attending Spelman like others. But, my parent's went to Grambling, so I always had love for HBCU's. BUT, I THANK GOD EVERYDAY THAT I MADE THE RIGHT DECISION!

- What are the GOOD and BAD advantages of attending a HBCU?

Good- The friendships- meet my best friends at Spelman, seeing so many Black people taking care of business is inspiring, small classes, nurturing staff, just the overall vibe of the AUC was awesome!

Bad-We didn't have phone registration when I left ('98), the registration process, the financial aid office, the caf (it was ok, but a sista is expecting some fried chicken sometimes)

- What advice would you give to anyone seeking admission into
a HBCU?

Research the schools, talk to a few alumni, and see where you fit

I chose my HBCU--Spelman--because I simply fell in love with their mission when I visited there my senior year in high school. As a matter of fact, I told my parents "Y'all can just leave me here now and just mail my stuff to me!" LOL An HBCU was attractive to me because it allowed me to get out of the box of being the "smart black girl". I was tired of being the only or one of the only blacks in the higher level classes and being the token when my HS needed to show diversity for something. When I visited Spelman and saw so many BEAUTIFUL, INTELLIGENT woman running thangs I just knew I had to be a part of it.

Good (I'll try not to repeat some of the ones others have mentioned)
Being from a small town, I unknowingly lumped Black people in 1 or 2 major categories. Spelman taught me the diversity in my own community and increased my perspective on what it means to be a Black woman in America
The expectation that you WOULD succeed
The professors who nurtured you and challenged you at the same time
The great Black minds that visited for lectures, presentations, etc.
The Spelman Sisterhood. There is a bond that connects Spelman women everywhere that is undeniable!
The AUC. The fact that we were in close proximity to other HBCU was wonderful
The traditions...initiation into the Spelman sisterhood, the dorm competitions, Founders Day

The Bad
Some of the resources (libraries, labs, etc.) are not at the same level of large state schools or private PWI
Registration was a nightmare back then, but my nephew goes to Morehouse and they have online registration now. No more standing in the gym for what seemed like days to get the classes you wanted!
After 15 years, the bad is really just a distant memory while the Good lives on.....

Like other folks have said, research, talk to alumni AND current students, visit the campus if you can and know yourself. While I was accepted in to several large state schools I knew that that environment was not the best for me.

Good luck! My eldest neice is a senior in college this year and I am taking her on a mini college tour. Last year we visited Spelman, Clark Atlanta, Emory and University of Georgia. This year we will go to Hampton, Howard, Duke and Spelman. Yeah, I know we're going to Spelman twice, but since I'm sponsoring the trip I can be a little biased! :p

I had the options of attending Florida A&M, Jackson State, Kentucky State, Alcorn, Tennessee State, and Central State. I narrowed it down to three: JSU, FAMU and TSU.

I didn't attend FAMU because 98% of my family lives in Tallahassee...so with that being said, it would have been like going to school at home (Detroit)...there was really nothing new for me to experience there. I grew up, and is always in Tallahassee.

Jackson State: Everybody in the band at my high school went to Jackson State. It would've been like going to high school all over again. PLUS, my grandfather will be 100 in February and he still thinks it's 1923..lol. He told me "you ain't going to Mississippi...that ain't no place for coloreds" lol.

Sooooo, I chose Tennessee State. I fell in love with the school, it's history and the campus. Man, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.

Fisk University was my HBCU of choice. My parents were both HBCU alum, Southern University, so I knew about them but hadn't really started considering one till I had reached my tired of being the token Black girl limit. Half the schools I applied to were HBCUs, another quarter were near HBCUs. I chose Fisk, and this will sound SO SILLY, but my acceptance letter was dated on my birthday and I thought it was a good omen. Not to mention that at the time Fisk was the cheapest school with teh best reputation so that's where I headed.
