Let's throw some sanity into this conversation.
Plenty of females like bowties. I do. Bowties are cute but I think in certain situations, if they have particularly crazy patterns or colors, they can come to look inappropriate. I like Vineyard Vines. Indeed, I bought a little VV tie with Robert E. Lees and George Washingtons on it for my ex-boyfriend as his graduation present from W&L. I really want to get myself the VV bag that has those designs on it plus the W&L Trident on it. But... I think that VV became ridiculously trendy and a lot of people jumped on it to be like "OMGZ I'm southern preppy!" Basically, it became silly. I do like "southern preppy" clothing and I think in many situations it's appropriate and damn sexy. But as Rudey says, there are times when such clothing looks silly and immature. And if you're really a old money, classy gent, you ain't buying ANY brands. You're buying bespoke items and getting your clothing tailor-made. So let's end this argument. |
Um, yeah, hi...Pink is so new money it's not even funny.
I'd rather be no riche than nouveau riche. |
I think it's well established that macallan and co. are just making this all up, right? No real southern fraternity men who have this much to say on the subject of clothing.

Really? The ones I know have plenty of other things to do besides yammer on about their hatred for flat front pants-- in person OR online.

No, unlike a plethora of people on this board, I actually am an undergrad and my parents are middle aged. So you are saying that absolutely people weat seersucker and bowties.......but they are all old? Maybe not, but thats what I get out of that. I dunno, I see differently when I am in your area and just about every area of the deep South worth going to. I mean, look at the pictures and photo albums on the VV and Southern Proper sites. Seems like they are all in the 18-24 range and are shown at events like the Carolina Cup, etc. etc. |

I'd wear something goofy too for the right amount of money. |
Is it bad that I find it hilarious that a company that is mentioned on this thread as being this "Southern Preppy" is actually from the North?
|
which one?

Ooh yea. I was wondering about that the other day. Then it just slipped my mind.

so...
ok so i dont have an opinion on which is better, northern or southern preppy, but i like the fact that were talking about it. please stop fighting. this is a nice topic and we can all debate on it while still maintaing composure. (if ive spelled something wrong please dont kill me).
as for VV i think they might be more northern. I looked at the wedding pictures and alot of the bridal parties actually have the groomsmen wearing khakis and a blazer. not ALL of the photos have this, but the majority do. In the south, i doubt that MOST (not all) weddings parties tend to dress more formally. blazers and ties are what you wear to Ole Miss football games, not your sisters wedding. also, what about Perlis. That is definetly southern! A crawfish on a polo...northerners would probably be more likely to wear a lobster. tommy hilfiger mass produced what id call northern preppy, and although jcrew is popular in the south they do lean more toward the northern style. after all they have lobsters in alot of their patterns. pleaase dont mention abercrombie on here! thats teenage preppy. preppy is polo, lacoste, vv, madras and sweater around the neck. a and f is trendy... after all most hardcore old school preppies wouldnt wear pants with rhinestones on the butt. additionally i think different areas have different preppy icons. although im from the south, i think most preppy icons are yuppie types from up north (ie the kennedys). thanks and lets stay sweet yall. this is all just for fun!:D |
Ok so I have been spending way too much time on the Vineyard Vines site and am in love with their clothing. I also think that this glass is the cutest thing ever.

look at those Northern Fraternity guys - hair gel, abercrombie, man jewelry, designer jeans. oh the horror |
From the Vineyard Vines website:
Phi Delta Theta at W&L http://www.vineyardvines.com/images/...54a.detail.jpg I may have actually found people that have more pastels than I do in their wardrobes. Interesting that they're all male. ETA: solo cups and bowties make an intereting combination. |

I also want to know how Tucker knew the northern guys were wearing designer jeans when all I can see of them is the THIGH and CROTCH regions.

Yay for me! I think these guys look great. It's going to be nice to be on this campus where people dress properly and aren't slobs. No picture I guess but the girls are just as cute. Ask BG. |
