Hi bear, yep I'm from Dora

Hi Bear,
I graduated from Dora in 2000. Our senior class only had about 16 people in it. My dad was an administrator there. He's leaving after this year. I used to date a guy named Travis who knew kids from a lot of schools. Who did you know over here?
Actually I kind of exaggerated my years in Kansas, but we were there until I was about 16 I guess, and I went to KU for a couple of years. Now I'm taking year off before going back to MU.
I played basketball, believe me, at Dora, it became a full contact sport. It was at KU too. Those girls were mean!

SMSUBear 03-26-2004 12:45 AM

The SEC (Southeastern Conference) is...

Alabama
Arkansas
Auburn
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
LSU (Louisiana State)
Mississippi State
Ole Miss (University of Mississippi)
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

Auburn is in Auburn, Alabama, and Vanderbilt is in Nashville.

I know Travis, don't know you. I went to Gainesville, class of 2001. 53 kids, and my dad wasn't an administrator.

Hey Anchora, is "The world's largest outdoor cocktail party" really all it's cracked up to be? You hear about it a lot, but I was just wondering if it is as amazing as it is made out to be.

SMSUBear.

P.S. This whole thing with us both growing up in Ozark County is wierd. Hmmmmmm....

Thanks for the compliment but after reading this thread, UCLA is by far more casual in comparsion as well as USC. We are just way too comfortable going to class in jeans and a t-shirt and I have NEVER seen a student wear a dress to a football game!

And in response to how great all the SEC schools are, all this only little PAC-10 girl has to say is that UCLA receives by far the most applicants out of any other university in the nation, for something like 10 years now! Go Bruins!

I must admit though, I would love to visit some of this schools in the south. Maybe for non-conference football game, I think we played Alabama a couple years back so it could be a possibility!

MissouriGirl 03-26-2004 12:59 AM

Not growing up in Ozark County

Actually I didn't grow up in Ozark County. I grew up in Kansas, near Olathe, in a town called Springhill. I always thought KU was the big thing, and couldn't wait to go there, until I did. When my dad got the job down here, we moved to Dora. Culture shock. Then I went to see my boyfriend a couple years ago at LSU. Imagine a girl from Kansas, with an added accent from Dora, going to Louisiana. They laughed. But I had a good time there while I was visiting. I visited some of the sororities because I was thinking about transferring there. They were all full of southern hospitality. I was impressed. You don't get that treatment at MU.

SMSUBear 03-26-2004 01:04 AM

I'm sure you UCLA people NEVER have a problem getting tickets to the games, do you? You guys think you're soo special just cause you have the Rose Bowl at your fingertips every Saturday, well, Mizzou can only seat a little over half as many, but we have a big M at the end of one of our endzones made out of bleached rocks, and it's cool looking. Though one time some kids changed the M to an N before a Huskers game. And they call theirselves Mizzou students.

It sure would be nice to be able to go to a school which is athletically...well...good. I'd settle for a .500 division 1-A school, but I have to go to some 1-AA school who hasn't had a winning season since the frigging Eisenhower administration. And then I'm supposed to cheer for them and go to their games when I sit down in front of the TV and see my Tigers whoop up on some Husker butt (like they did this year...score). I'll get right on down to Plaster Sports Complex (and no, it's not named after some person:) )

I would never go to a school that was as big as LSU. SMSU's campus is tiny, and I still have a problem with walking to class. I'd like to go to Mizzou, partially cause they provide the residency part of my Dietetics degree in my major, and because I'd have something super awesome to do on a Saturday, and about 60,000 other people to share it with, but it's also about 150% of the price, and I'm low on the funds.

Yea SEC!! Way to go Bama!

Anyhow SMSUBear...even if you don't spend a semester or two at an SEC school...it'd be well worth your time to at least visit and experience a great SEC game or 2, or 3... ;) If you visit Ole Miss for a game this year...might I suggest the Ole Miss-Tennessee game--it's a guarunteed good time.

And all my Ole Miss people will get this: You know what might be my favorite thing about Oxford?? The fact that we have unique restaurants and places to go rather than chains. For those of you who don't know there are only 2 chain restaurants in Oxford (other than fast food) and they have only been open for like 1-2 years. The chain bar/grilles are Applebees and Chili's...and they are on the far end of town. So if you go to dinner in Oxford you're pretty much guarunteed to get something different and unique. And...chain stores aren't allowed on the square.

SMSUBear 03-26-2004 01:14 AM

You don't know this, Crimson Tide, but you avenged the death of the Mizzou tigers last year who were thrown out of the conference by Syracuse (land of snow). I thank you, and Roll Tide!!!!

So lets say I'm in Oxford. What happens if you can't cook, and you only have $3.00? No Mickey D's? That's a frigging crime! I'd lose the freshman fifteen that I never gained!

Hey, Bear, Did you know they have a lot of scholarships for specialized degrees in the health and medical fields at MU? You might check it out and see if your field falls into that. They are based on need, too, so if you're not one of those straight A people who get all the good scholarships, you can still apply.

SMSUBear 03-26-2004 01:22 AM

I flunked out earlier, and this is my first semester back, so for now we'll stay calm in bear territory. But I super appreciate the info. Maybe when I'm a junior or so I can mosey on up there and finish out my degree completely.

And for the Mississippi clarification.

Ole Miss (Mississippi)--Football School
Mississippi St.--Basketball School

And as a survival guide, never utter the words "War Eagle" at the University of Alabama, or the words "Roll Tide" at Auburn University. Chances are, you will be hurt.

Well, actually we don't and generally everyone who wants season tickets can if you apply soon enough. The Rose Bowl is great but really far from Westwood in Pasedena but not bad because that leads to beer buses! But thanks for the attitude, that sure came out of left field.

And by the way, we are SPECIAL...Hail to the Sons of Westwood!

Bummer! But some of those scholarships are surely offered at SMSU and transferable. Many of them are renewable for several years too. You should check into those as well. Many of the special fields, especially health related, have a lot of money to give away.

by the way, how did you know Travis? And is it the same one I "went out" with at Dora? (We didn't really, I was his cover, if you know what I mean)

SMSUBear 03-26-2004 01:34 AM

I met Travis once or twice randomly. And yes, I do know what you are talking about.

So, are there and gamecock lovers on this board :D :D :D . If so, what was the East coast USC like?

About the UCLA thing, that was my jealousy taking over. The Rose Bowl is easily the greatest stadium in america, and it doesn't even sell out most of the time. That's not to say it would in Missouri, but still.

Maybe you should trade with USC...J/K!

SMSUBear

TriDeltaGal 03-26-2004 01:43 AM

Yeah, it does kind of suck that the Rose Bowl rarely sells out but UCLA students as a whole are somewhat apathetic when it comes to football...not me though. I think I went to every home game except one when I was an undergrad. Football is not really UCLA's game either, now basketball that's a whole 'nother story! Wooden still gets standing ovations when he comes to the games! He's like 96!

USC...ahhh, touchy subject for a Bruin, but I would not want to trade stadiums with them. The Coliseum is a great stadium but not the greatest area. A little scary walking back to your car after a game...

SMSUBear 03-26-2004 01:47 AM

Delta lady, it's a little thing called "Raiderization". You see, the Oakland Raiders are scum, and when they had to play there, they consequently tainted the stadium and made it evil. Sure, USC wins, but when your fans get jumped in the parking lot, in all actuallity no one wins.

GO CHIEFS!!!!

Actually there is a section of the Berkely population that are not hippie/natural types.... and actually DO dress nicely... they're greek ;) I'm kidding... but seriously there are people at Berkely who dress in stylish clothing... I think in general people on west coast are a lot more lax about when they choose to get dressed up than in the south and east coast...

I know this wasn't addressed to me, but I'll answer it anyway, as I think I have a unique perspective being from Jacksonville ;)

It's an event not to be missed, if you are a dawg or gator. Where else can you see a stadium divided in half with red and the other half in orange? It does get a little crazy because you have both schools rowdiest fans all in the same place at the same time. Everyone comes down early in the week, so it's almost like a week worth of tailgating and partying.

I grew up going to this game every year, back when UGA was dominating the series. It hasn't been as much fun the past 13 years, with the exception of 1997, but I think it's going to be a lot of fun for us again soon :)

Great moments in a would be father's life
To my Son, if I ever have one:

Kid, I am writing this on September 3, 1984. I have just returned from Athens, where I spent Saturday watching the University of Georgia, your old dad's alma matter, play football against Clemson.

While the events of the day were still fresh on my mind, I wanted to recount them so if you are ever born, you can read this and perhaps be able to share one of the great moments in your father's life.

Saturday was a wonderful day on the Georgia campus.

We are talking blue, cloudless sky, a gentle breeze and a temperature suggesting summer's end and autumn's approach.

I said the blessing before we had lunch. I thanked the Lord for three things: fried chicken, potato salad and for the fact he had allowed me the privilege of being a Bulldog.

"And , Dear Lord," I prayed, "bless all those not as fortunate as I."

Imagine my son, 82,000 people, most whom were garbed in red, gathered together gazing down on a lush valley of hedge and grass where soon historic sporting combat would be launched.

Clemson was ranked number 2 in the nation, and Georgia, feared too young to compete with the veterans from beyond the river, could only dream, the smart money said, of emerging three hours hence victorious.

They had us 20-6 at the half, son. A man sitting in front of me said, "I just hope we don't get embarrassed."

My boy, I had never seen such a thing as came to pass in the second half. Todd Williams threw one long and high, and Herman Archie caught it in the end zone, and it was now 20-13.

Georgia got the ball again and scored again, and it was now 20-20, and my mouth was dry, and my hands were shaking, and this Clemson fan who had been running his mouth the whole ballgame suddenly shut his fat face.

Son, we got ahead 23-20, and the ground trembled and shook, and many were taken by fainting spells.

Clemson's kicker, Donald Igwebuike, tied it 23-23 and this sacred place became the center of the universe.

Only seconds were left when Georgia's kicker, Kevin Butler, stood poised in concentration. The ball rushed toward him, and it was placed upon the tee a heartbeat before his right foot launched it heavenward.

A lifetime later, the officials threw their arms aloft. From 60 yards away, Kevin Butler had been true, and Georgia led and would win 26-23.

I hugged perfect strangers and kissed a fat lady on the mouth. Grown men wept. Lightening flashed. Thunder rolled. Stars fell, and joy swept through, fetched by a hurricane of unleashed emotions.

When Georgia beat Alabama 18-17 in 1965, it was a staggering victory. When we came back against Georgia Tech and won 29-28 in1978, the Chapel bell rang all night. When we beat Florida 26-21 in the last seconds in 1980, we called it a miracle. And when we beat Notre Dame 17-10 in the Sugar Bowl that same year for the national championship, a woman pulled up her skirt and showed the world the Bulldog she had sewn on he underbritches.

But Saturday may have been even better than any of those.

Saturday in Athens was a religious experience.

I give this to you, son. Read it and re-read it, and keep it next to your heart. And when people want to know how you wound up with the name "Kevin" let them read it, and then they will know.

And yes...Mr. Grizzard was a proud member of Sigma Pi...

Just out of Curiosity, do you guys even consider Florida part of the SEC? All this SEC talk, and no one is representing from the Swamp. What gives?

Not true. I like cried every night during orientation because I wanted to be somewhere else. I do agree that Alabama has a pretty campus though.

I think southern schools in general are just beautiful in the spring. Except Knoxville...my sister went there and I used to tell her jokingly how beautiful all the concrete was. Truthfully pretty much every SEC school has something special. I like the fact that at UT you can take a yacht to the football games---and they have the largest stadium in the SEC.
