I am sitting here reading some of these post...It amazes me how different GLO's and BGLO's are...I mean it's like WOW:eek: Thats all i have to say.

There are too many people out there who constantly comb through their respective HQs' policies for loopholes. If you concretely define what hazing is, you'll without doubt end up with things that probably should be called hazing that definitely aren't.

Your best bet is when in doubt to consult with your HQ and campus advisors.

But that's exactly what I mean...spell it out to the nth degree. If that means listing every possible thing and ending up with a constitution the size of a book, so be it. It's better than eternally asking what the definition of "is" is.

Maybe this has been posted here before, but unless you would be willing to have it on the front page of Sunday's newspaper, it's probably hazing and should not be done.

i don't get it. why the hell should there be hazing? i mean, does sodomizing (sp?) a rush really make them respect you and want to be your "brother" or "sister"? it just seems really screwed. i've never been or taken part in hazing. I see the point of the tradition thing, but it seems like the tradition is getting more twisted and violent as each year goes by. and now it's happening to 15-16 year olds? that's just sick.

I knew a Pledge of unamed Fraternity at the first college taht I attended who was proud that he got his ass beat more times than his pledge brothers. That made this little midget wrestler feel like a bigger man! DA!:(

We almost beat the s**t of of each other over this deal. Wonder where the Moron is now?:confused:

Hazing is any activity which hurts someone physically or emotionally, or makes them uncomfortable, or embarassed. It includes (but is not limited to) physical abuse, physical harassment, required calisthenics or physical activities, errands or other subservient functions to chapter members, preventing or restricting sleep or class attendance, restricting personal hygiene, branding, marking, tattooing, forced consumption of food, liquor, drug or other substance (including water), any duty not shared by initiated members (cleaning the house, etc), verbal harassment, yelling or line ups, lewd or anti-social stunts, exposure to the weather, pointless clothing requirements, blindfolding, scavenger hunts, transporting or stranding members, requiring signatures or singing, and scare tactics about Initiation.

Hazing destroys trust and is demoralizing and demeaning. It is illegal in 41 states and forbidden by ALL fraternities and sororities. Hazing can destroy self confidence. Rather than foster unity, it creates cliques.

It's wrong.

wowzas. thank you so much for you outstanding point of view and i myself will totally agree with u that its humiliating for a human being to go through all that unnessary toture to be in a sorority or fraternity. I believe that ur point of view will help me out alot in my essay for my class. Thanks a bunch.

It shouldn't be experienced in athletics, band, or other clubs either. It is increasingly occurring at the high school level which is just downright scary.

OMG and i was also reading on this one website that it even was occurring in Middle School also. Thats even more scarier then ever. It makes me wonder if its taught or if it just happens with demented students getting a thrill out of hurting others.

One thing I noticed right off the bat was how easy it gets every year for people to join a GLO. I think its an insult to those of us who came a number of years ago and went through a bunch of schit and now none of these kids these days have to do anything other than a stupid scav hunt. I joined an org 6 years ago, a year later we were banned from campus and went underground. Lost our charter and almost lost our house, lucky for us we trashed it so bad no one wanted to put the money out to pay to have it fixed up on top of buying the actual house. By the fall of 2001 we were allowed to have our first rush, those guys didnt have to go through schit. They didnt even have a hell week. Personally, I just dont see how you can have the same bond with someone else who didnt go through that same stuff as you did. The way I look at it, if you can make it through some of the stuff done to you with a brother...you guys can make through anything together. I guess being hazed isnt really about are you willing to go thorugh some b.s. in order to be in an org. For me it was more about testing to see what I was willing to endure to be able to have friends that would ride till we die. Seldom in life do people meet or have friends that will be there till the end no matter what. 6 years after our class I still reguarly talk to at least 3/4 of my pledge class (about 50 guys). And believe me, if it wasnt for them as well as other friends....I'd either be dead or in jail. As for the guys who werent in my pledge class and didnt go through the stuff we went through....I probably still talk to 2 of them, out of 120.

Do we have to go thru this again. I pledged 35 plus years ago. Times have had to change. Hazing got out of hand. Laws were passed.

The old days have to be gone, or every chapter will meet the same fate yours originally did.

You just pointed out that it doesn't build chapter unity, only pledge class unity (i.e. cliques).

I don't know what your GLOs creed or purpose is, but our Purpose doesn't leave room for hazing. When we give a woman a bid, she has earned her way into our sisterhood, just by being herself.

Ohhh don't even try to give me "We love her just being herself" crap. That greek loving bullschit doesn't happen in the real world. Sorority girls are by far the worst back stabbing whores out there. I wont even begin to tell you about all the b.s. drama that went on behind the scenes within sororities at UF, my girlfriends used to tell me everything and how there were sisters in their house that people hated.

It happened in my world and I continue to see chapters with strong sisterhood who do not haze. That isn't to say that there are never disagreements or that everybody were best friends, but I've never seen sisters who always got along 100% of the time. I do know that I can walk into any group of Alpha Gams, whether I know them or not, and I am immediately welcomed warmly because we share a ritual that binds us and a Purpose that we strive for.

Sorry if this has already been stated but with all due respect, it sounds like your friend from West Point was discharged from the Army. Cadets that attend West Point have to serve at least four years in the army before being able to be discharged. When you graduate, you do so with a commission. Most cadets then decide to serve longer than the four years. "It's not just a job, it's a career." If your friend came directly to your school from West Point, "after finishing school" then most likely he was either dismissed from West Point and or discharged from the service. And unless it was for medical reasons, it very well may have been a dishonorable discharge.

The reason I bring this up is that your friend may not be the best resource with respect to the West Point Academy and their "hazing".

By the way. Training for the service is very different than hazing. Yes hazing did - and perhaps still does - go on within the service academies. But that doesn't make it right. My nephew is a 2nd year at the Air Force Academy and he has some "stories" to tell. But the best one is that after there was a crack down on hazing, the camaraderie, the working as a unit, all the things that the brass were afraid would fall by the way side did not. Actually it got better.
