If this is indeed going on, I would suggest that you contact the NPC immediately! |
Okay, I was just trying to find out when Homecoming was (25 October, if you didn't know), and decided to check out the Greek Life page at Pitt. Now, the print is hard enough to read (don't they teach webmasters not to use ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME?), but nowhere on that site could I find a list of the fraternities or sororities! Am I crazy, or is that self-defeating? What if you were choosing your college according to which GLOs were on campus?
Check it out for yourselves: http://www.pitt.edu/~ifcoun/main.html |

A LOT. That being said, I couldn't find the list either - and even worse than that - the abbreviations on there made me stop and think. What about the poor rushees? |
At least I'm not alone! *whew* If that website is any indication of Pitt's Recruitment, I'm guessing that the Bid Cards will be in braille.
|
that's the ifc's webpage. It hasn't been updated in 3 years. Panhel also has it's own page - www.pitt.edu/~panhel
It's not as impressive and hasn't been updated. lol, you know the ifc website was part of the "greek review" report. ETA: If you look at the bottom of the main IFC page there is a list of fraternities "coming soon" which has a link to some of their websites, etc. |
I just got back from helping the Pitt girls practice their recruitment skills. This is the first time I have met the chapter, and I cannot begin to tell you how impressed I was! Yeah!!! :D
|
lol, that's me next weekend
|
Thank you so much for coming Kristi!
I think we all had fun, and it really helped the newer girls and gave them more of an idea of what to expect. Maria is doing a great job as recruitment coordinator. Hopefully rush will go well. The new member educator told me she was concerned b/c at the activities fair only 300 girls expressed an interest in rush at the panhel table, usually over 500 girls do. So hopefully things will work out and they'll get a big rush going through! And yeah, the IFC and Panhel webpages are so out of date and pathetic. You'd think that would be a priority.... |
hmm-well it's still two weeks and there are a lot of women who wait until the last minute.
Keep in mind they haven't had meet the greeks or "watermellon picnic/fall bash" yet so.... |
Quote:
I love Meet the Greeks. But those stupid pre-rush events just seem like another thing to have to go to whereas that time and energy could be spent better elsewhere :) |
I liked it better when it was held on the cathedral lawn-when they starting stuffing everyone in the quad was when it got really bad.
It also used to be two separate events-turnout for watermellon picnic was okay, but fall bash never really attracted anyone. I agree with you Dani- it is *very* intimidating. |
300? If I can remember, it seems there are more girls expressing interest now then at this time last year. I just remember Liz freaking out when over 200 girls signed up for recruitment and that was only a week before recruitment starts, which is the numbers we need to worry about. Therefore, it sounds like we are going to have good numbers going thru.
|
well the 300 was at the student activities fair, where we know kids just walk around signing up for whatever. hell, when i was an officer for habitat for humanity we had more kids than that sign our paper. Who knows though, until we see the numbers.
Although i wouldn't be surprised if they went down. The economy sucks and many (NOT all) of the kids that go to Pitt are from working class families. I guess we can only see though. One thing though is that I wish they promoted it more. Start getting these girls interested from day one.... have more ads in the Pitt news and more flyers and tables around campus. |
Is quota determined before or after 4-rounds? Miss one year, and you're totally out of the loop!
|
Okay, another question! I just got a call from our Recruitment Chairman. She told me that they have to tell Panhel which alumnae are going to be helping them during Recruitment. Does anyone know if we have to state which party(ies), or just a general "I'll be there"?
|
We don't have to let Panhellenic know what alumnae will be at the rec. parties---that was only going to be the case if the alumnae-being-able-to-recruit women rule had passed...which is interesting in itself, considering that it's in the Green Book that alumnae can talk to women during recruitment, especially if a chapter is small...but that's an entirely different issue...
Also, from what I understand, while 220 women signed up to go through recruitment, only 13 have actually formally signed up/paid the fee. But tomorrow is Meet the Greeks, so I know more women will sign up! Good luck to everyone in the next couple of weeks! I'm so excited to meet potential new members!! |
You know you're nervous about Rush when...
You see that there are 13 women signed up for recruitment and think, "Wow - Quota would be all of one person!!" May I get through the next 2 weeks sanely... |
I'll be on my honeymoon/doing wedding stuff while Pitt's rush is going on......
and I hope ya'll realize that I will probably sneak away from the activities to check and see how things are going. :p |

First of all-- Congratulations on getting married!! I hope that your wedding turns out to be everything you always dreamt it would be!
Secondly-- Meet the Greeks was last night. For some reason, everything got pushed back by a few nights (with the exception of recruitment itself). According to our Panhellenic member (whos name will be withheld), there were 286 girls who came in the two hours that it was held. They expect about 150 more. I am not sure who, of these people, have paid their registration fees. My roommate and I passed by outside on our way back from the library and sneaked a peek from an inseen location. It looked like everyone was having a ball! Im so eexxcccciiitted! As always, L* |

MoxieGrrl: Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I'm so excited for you and I know it will be wonderful :) Kddani: Speaking of weddings, I had a dream last night that you got married! I don't remember much other than you and me and Sheila were walking to that Cathedral on 5th (St. Pauls, I think?) and you had a big, fluffy, Princess Diana-type dress on and we were trying to keep the dress from dragging on the sidewalk. No more GreekChat before bed for ME! lol |

Moxiegirl, I wish you every happiness in your upcoming marriage.
kddani, I also wish you happiness in your dream-like marriage! :D |
SAD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Figured since this is the thread that every Pittsburgh area GCer reads.....
rumor has it that Sombrero Man has passed away :( For those of you not familiar, this was a "homeless" guy who was always on the streets asking for change, and his trademark was a Sombrero. He's an Oakland icon. |
Sombraro man and Pitt News
I can assure you that sombrero man is not dead. I saw him yesterday asking for some change. I can’t tell you how relived I was to see him, although I noticed that he seems to have retired his sombrero.
In other news… The Pitt news covered our Greek auction… The news coverage is still skewed as you can read. The SigEp that did it was spoofing Party Boy from “Jack ass” He wasn’t just running around in his boxers. http://www.pittnews.com/vnews/displa.../3f8e3969af614 |
Okay, how the hell did I not hear about this? Eric Nies was hosting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????????? ?????????????????? Granted, he's getting up there in the years, but he's still hot.
I'm really pissed that I never found out about this! hahahaa |
That sounds so fun! I would have loved to have seen it :)
Can someone tell me how long Greek Week has been held in the fall? It used to be in March (see what I mean, Sheila? The times they are a changin' :( ) |
Quote:
|
i don't know why they call it "week". it's a bunch of different events stretched out the ENTIRE F'IN YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's officially over the first Saturday night in April which is the greek week formal.
|
Greek Week is infact held over the entire year. The reason being that it helps split up the cost and time commitment so that people with jobs dont have to take a week off. Its actually not that bad except You never actually interact with a sorority outside of greek sing. You match with a different sorority for each event so for greek sing you are extreamly involved but for greek auction you dont even speak untill the night of.
|
Funny, that doesn't sound like the least bit of fun to me. :(
|
More positive publicty for Greeks
Hey guys. Theta Nu Xi held a lecture on women's cross cultural relations called Divided Sisters. The lecture was given by the two authors, Dr. Midge Wilson and Kathy Russel, and even though only 8 people came to the event besides the 5 sorors that were there we had a great time.
Here's an article the Pitt News did. They called us a society instead of sorority though.... Shelbs http://www.pittnews.com/vnews/displa.../3f9e9a02339b5 |
Latest rumor
Heard today a rumor that they might increase total to 65 before the spring comes?
And something about spring rush being a "structured COB", whatever the heck that is. Any info? |
Re: Latest rumor
Quote:
We had structured COB when I was in school. It's basicaly the same, only with a semi-final & a pref party run by Panhel. How many sororities are more than 10 off total? |
THey had discussed making informal like fraternity recruitment - ie off campus which is a big no-no!!
There are 2 that are 10 or more under, maybe 3. I heard that they had nixed the idea of raising ceiling until everyone was close to ceiling. Out of the other 9, except for maybe one almost everyone is between 50-60 members. |
First of all, I want to congradulate all of the Houses that had ladies that made it on the Panhel exec board on Tuesday night-- DPhiE, Chi Omega, AEPhi, Tri Sigma and Theta Phi Alpha.
Secondly, Every year the Pitt News has a readers poll that votes for the Bests and and the Worsts of the University. This year, I am Proud to announce that the priviledge has gone to Theta Phi Alpha! We are all overwhelmed. To see the article, go herehere !!! p.s. Phi Kappa Theta won best fraternity. They accidentally spelt their name wrong though!! Biggg faux pas. |
How did they misspell Phi Kappa Theta? By the time I looked online it was fixed.
Congratulations ladies! ! ! |
Congratulations to Theta Phi Alpha & Phi Kappa Theta - and to the Pitt News for even picking Best Sorority/Best Fraternity!! I thought I'd never live to see the day! I had more good times at the Phi Kap house than I really care to mention! ;)
Congratulations also to the new Panhel Board! |
Congratulations to Theta Phi Alpha and Phi Kap! I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the Pitt News acknowledging that there are good greeks out there.
This is my favorite part of the article; probably Honeychile and I are the only ones here who remember this... Best Pitt tradition: Penn State Sucks My heart swelled with pride when I saw this year's best Pitt tradition. Honestly, I didn't expect anyone to remember it. You see, shortly before I arrived on campus, Pitt put an end to our chants of hatred for a team we won't play for many years. Apparently, the administration wasn't a big fan of tens of thousands of voices clamoring for a rival their football team wasn't playing. They thought it was disrespectful or something. But we know better. Hating Penn State isn't just a tradition; it's a way of life here. It's part of what makes us Pitt, whether or not their terrible football team is scheduled to lose to us in any given year. It's amazing and wonderful that, in a school where so many traditions have died away - a moment of silent rage for Pitt script, here - we can still embrace a rivalry that most of the students here will never see on the field during their enrollment. So rise, upperclassmen, educate the young'uns about the glory of their forebears! Teach them the war cry of those who came before, so that no uptight administrator will ever silence our vow of contempt. And, for those of you who haven't been bathed in the blood of Pitt's holy rivalry, listen and learn. No matter the time, no matter the sport, no matter the opponent, there is only one thing to remember: Penn State sucks, Penn State sucks, P-E-N-N-S-T sucks! - Greg Heller-LaBelle, Editor in Chief |
