I think the Big Brothers need to have more lineups because they have too much time on their hands.

Lindsay and Alex are toxic. She is too suffocating. Do you have to sit at the fraternity's table? Can Alex have a life? Does his life have to center around you? Lindsay needs some serious therapy.

I really am sick of the girls last night saying "the sigma chi pledges did this" The sigma chi pledges said that. THEY AREN"T SIGMA CHI!!!!! People at school are saying, Hey whats with your fraternity on MTV. I hope our IHQ gets on their asses and makes them say sigma chi omega instead of shortening it to just sigma chi.

One of the DZOs who posts on here said they tried to refer to them with their full name, but it's hard to do it every time. Think about the groups on your campus with 3 letters, how often do you not shorten it when you say it.

They can't "make them" say anything at this point since the filiming is long since completed. What they could do is dub it in the editing process. It will sound stupid, but they already did it with the commercials.

ALEX HAS BALLS!!!!

I'm glad he decided to stand on his own two feet. Maybe now, He can exhale and take care of business.

That's bothering me too, in part because Sigma-AEPi was so often mistaken for AEPhi, and Sigma-AEPi was so badly portrayed, and in part because the Sigma Chi's at my school were/are gentlemen, and I highly doubt they subject their pledges to anything like what the Sigma Chi Omega pledges are going through.

Of course, thanks to the magic of editing, even if a DZO (or anyone else) did use the full name, by the time it hits the air, it could easily have become "So, the Sigma Chi <snip> pledges blah blah blah..."

MTV may not have been able to get hold of a national org, but they're not above making it look like they did, and that their version of greek life is what greek life really is all about.

Excelsior301 03-28-2003 12:58 AM

MTV is a trip. I'm watching the episode of Frat Life from last night. The scene at the zoo just came on. The camera zooms in on a No Trespassing Authorized Personnel Only sign but do they stop the guys? Of course not. It will make for greating viewing.
MTV should hold some of the blame at the zoo. It's not like they weren't aware of what was going on. They were standing there taping it

FAB*SpiceySpice 03-28-2003 01:14 AM

I am sooooooo glad Alex broke up with Lindsey, she sucked, it makes me sick to know that there are honestly girls out there who are so dependent on someone else. Get a life of your own sweetheart.

As for the other pledges, Earl I think needs therapy, Steve needs a nice kick in the ass, Tim is cool, and Paul needs....well.....ME! :D Haha, ok wishful thinking, but he sure is a hottie. ;)

Not to mention trespassing themselves.

alphaiota 03-29-2003 11:31 PM

no actually, according to reports (aka articles that have been posted on gc) mtv didn't trespass onto zoo property. they said that mtv shot the footage from outside the fence to the zoo.
still extremely stupid all around. boys......what do you expect. :D

Wouldn't they be considered accessories to a crime then?

MTV has a hands-off policy when it comes to the things that happen on their reality shows (well, to an extent). I remember "Real World: Hawaii" being a big deal because sending Ruthie to detox was the first time they had ever "intervened" in a filming process during RW. I recall reading an interview with the producers where they said that they had a dilemma between preserving the "unscripted" nature of the show and making sure Ruthie didn't kill herself. I think unless the people they're filming are doing something extremely harmful that can get them killed or kill somebody else, the camera crew/other crew members are not allowed to intervene.

Of course, after Hawaii, RW realized that it could get more viewers by showing drama drama drama all the time, and in doing so, they lost the unscripted nature of the show. But RW Hawaii is the first time that MTV realized that casting for drama and pushing drama along makes for "better" TV (I put better in quotes because I'm inclined to disagree) and more viewers, and without it we probably would never have shows like Sorority Life and Fraternity Life.

Speaking of RW Ruthie, that same question came up when they filmed her driving drunk. Not to mention the times they've filmed underagers entering clubs or having fake ID's. I seem to also remember that one of the cast members had a suspended license and they filmed her driving.

DeltAlum or any other media/law pros, what's the deal?

PsychTau 03-30-2003 10:41 PM

MTV (at least the camera crew) may have been smarter than we give them credit for by filming the No Trespassing sign and then filming from OUTSIDE the zoo.

Hmmmmm. . . .

alphaiota 03-30-2003 11:01 PM

mtv maybe extremely annoying, but they aren't stupid. they knew they couldn't go in or else they would get in trouble too.

No.

Criminal laws vary from state to state, and I don't recall NY's law off the top of my head, but the Model Penal Code states that to meet the legal definition of an accomplice, he must "solicit, aid, agree to aid, or attempt to aid the crime; or have a legal duty to prevent the commission, but does not."

From the video that I saw (and ONLY from what I saw), I don't think standing outside the zoo and videotaping them meets the legal definition. Nor did MTV have a legal duty to prevent them from entering the zoo.

Though I frown upon and disagree with some of the things they do, I think we are being too hard on them. There's not a fraternity (or sorority) I know that hasn't done any stupid pranks like that. Also, the line-ups, push ups, etc. are nothing compared to some of the hazing I both heard of and witnessed myself. There are like any other fraternity in my eyes.

Not my chapter. They probably represent a minority of chapters that still do things like that. Those that continue to behave like that will either have to change or cease to exist.

BSUPhiSig'92 04-01-2003 12:31 PM

Plus how stupid do you have to be to do these things when you know you are being filmed?

Dionysus 04-01-2003 12:49 PM

They forgot the cameras were there.

Or

They didn't give a damn.

As a reality tv follwer, I read a lot of interviews on people who were on them, almost all of them claimed that they "got used" to the cameras after a while.

I just now FINALLY saw the latest episode of FL. I thought the paper towel toga was hilarious and the Alex-imitation phone conversations were great as well!

Mari-103 04-02-2003 10:45 PM

texas*princess 04-02-2003 11:24 PM

Missions?

Tonight's epsiode of SL showed the fellows of Sigma Chi Omega said they had a "mission" to get all the signatures of the DZO pledges... I wonder would this be 'hazing'?

I think I'm to the point where I'd like to send the whole lot of DZO and Sigma Chi Omega over Niagra Falls without a barrel!

And next week Earl announces he is a virgin and hooks up with a stripper.

Classy...

PsychTau 04-03-2003 01:41 AM

OK, I taped FL for my husband to watch when he got home. We were watching the part where George gets the text message during the brothers meeting. . .when the camera panned to George, my husband starts yelling "THAT'S A SIGMA CHI BANNER!!! THEY HAVE OUR BANNER!!!" (He's a Sigma Chi). Anyway, I paused it on a shot of George with the banner behind him. The banner (could be a flag) looked like this: Top half was blue, bottom half gold. In the middle was a white cross (looked like my husband's badge), and Sigma Chi Omega was written on the bottom (in English).

I don't have the technology to put a picture up here (maybe TexasGal can put it up on doublesweetie.com??). Any Sigma Chis reading this board, does this sound like a banner/flag that ya'll use? (Hubby has been out of college for a while)

And by the way, it was CLASSIC when Brad said during the meeting "What are we going to look like on TV. . .":p What ARE you going to look like?????

BUFFALO ZOO
Fraternity prank may lead to charges

By TOM BUCKHAM
News Staff Reporter

The Buffalo Zoo will prosecute three University at Buffalo students
who apparently climbed into the facility after hours last fall in a
prank videotaped for "Fraternity Life," an MTV reality series.

Zoo President Donna M. Fernandes said Wednesday she will ask the Erie
County district attorney's office today to pursue charges against Tim
Kukulka, Earl Altheide and Steve Paul.

In an episode of "Fraternity Life" scheduled for broadcast Wednesday
night, the Sigma Chi Omega pledges were shown scaling a wall near a
zoo entrance and walking around between the hyena and roan antelope
exhibit near the center of the zoo, said Fernandes, who viewed a copy
of the tape after UB alerted the zoo to the incident.

The students talked briefly about stealing an animal as a mascot for
the fraternity house before one of them said, "This is dumb," and the
three climbed back over the wall, "got in Land Rovers supplied by the
MTV producers and drove off," Fernandes said.

It's uncertain whether the camera crew got into the zoo with the
students, although the activity in the segment apparently was shot
from outside, she said.

Entering a zoo after hours "is not only a danger to the animals, but
sometimes people get injured or killed," Fernandes said.

In 1985, police were forced to shoot two Buffalo Zoo polar bears to
death after an intruder climbed into their enclosure one night and
was mauled.

And in 1989, a Buffalo Zoo zebu - a pygmy Brahma bull - was put to
death after being severely beaten at night by an unknown assailant.

The decision to prosecute the UB students "was not made lightly,"
Fernandes said. "We are the stewards of this animal collection for
the entire community. We will take any and all steps necessary to
ensure the safety of our animals."

MTV has not responded to the zoo's complaints about the incident, she said.

The zoo will consider bolstering its nighttime security, which
includes officers, maintenance workers and strategically placed
cameras, Fernandes added.

Kukulka, Altheide and Paul were subpoenaed March 18 to appear before
the Student-Wide Judiciary, according to the Spectrum, UB's student
newspaper.

Altheide told the paper that the incident had nothing to do with
pledging and that the three brothers sneaked out of the house in the
hopes of stealing a chicken from the zoo to keep as a pet.

The three left after realizing they could not get into any of the
cages, Paul told the Spectrum.

"It's not like we were harming the animals or anything," he said. "We
were just, like, patrolling the zoo."

Sigma Chi Omega already is in trouble with UB over earlier scenes
from the MTV series. The chapter was suspended earlier this month
after university officials decided some activities caught on film
might be hazing.

i may be in the minority here, but i was honestly amused by this episode. while watching sl, i was bored to bits, but then when i saw it from the other perspective, i almost died laughing. i am glad that the boys figured out that this was stupid....and i hope that keep remembering it!

my biggest complaint is what the hell was that alum doing at the house at 5 AM so that he could throw flour on the dzo house????

Was I the only one that was kinda taken aback by how many times they called the DZO girls "bitches"?

On a better note, Alex is still single! He said so on the SL/FL boards and he hasn't talked to her in six months(hey, I'd be down with the swirl!lol)
