Of course she rocks, she's a KD...hehe;)

kdonline 08-30-2002 06:12 PM

aww shucks!

Thanks...I didn't do it to score points. I did it because I am so proud of Curlygirly!! http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/serv.../pconfetti.gif
Plus, I remember what a thrill it was to receive flowers at The House and then take them back to The Dorm. http://216.40.241.68/kao/otn/ptrose.gif

You know, it's a coincidence... I am still in touch with one of my high school teachers (who just retired last year - I actually taught with her at my old high school). She was probably the most influential woman (who wasn't a relative) in my life.

But guess what sorority she's in!? Kappa Kappa Gamma!

Heh - maybe CG will have a student, mentee or daughter who will go KD! http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/serv...sroom/m-pu.gif

Silverblue 08-30-2002 06:34 PM

That just illustrates how important it is for sorority women to promote the Greek system in general and not trash-talk other GLOs. When we support each other, we all get stronger.

Formal recruitment season is approaching quickly.

That being said...

I would like to take a moment to bump this wonderful thread to ensure that future generations of PNMs can see that it is possible to be truthful without being disrespectful.

I know we often preach that discretion is key, and it still is -- which prompted the whole assigning of code names to sororities for each recruitment story.

Disclose as much or as little info you want, but if you're going to post something along the lines of "Oh, so tonight I visited the TARGET house (if it was a major national store chain theme she had going on) and like, their rush skit was so cute and I really really really liked their outfits..." ...then I'm going to be blunt and say that you shouldn't even bother posting at all.

In a perfect world, all recruitment threads should be like this. That's all I have to say.

carnation 08-02-2005 09:48 AM

Curlygirly's thread is one of our most outstanding! But whether one should post actual names of houses would depend on how much information the PNM has revealed about herself. If she's revealed, say, she's from Delaware and she's going to Utah State, then she shouldn't use real names because she'd be too easy for members to identify. Or even if she's from a tiny town in Georgia and rushing at UGa or if she's already said she has curly red hair--how many redheads are there?

Think discretion, y'all! Even if we do want to know house names in the worst way!

curlygirly 08-02-2005 11:56 AM

awwww

Thanks for bumping this thread!! I had completely forgotten about all this... but it was so nice to re-read it. Well to update... I graduated from U of F in December, and am now working in Miami (my hometown). kdonline and I **still** keep in touch, and meet up for lunch and all that... it's great. My 2 1/2 years in Kappa were wonderful (since I pledged as a sophomore, and graduated a semester early). I got my own little family... a little, a twin (my big got a 2nd little), a grand-little and then my twins little (whatever that is called!). hehe. I had an absolutely amazing time with all my sisters, and I am so glad that I decided to go through rush... even when I wasn't too sure about it. I visited Gainesville back in April, after I had graduated. When I walked into the house, it was the sweetest thing... everyone said hi to me as if I'd never left... and then moments later they'd say "OHMYGOD! It's YOU!" Like it just hit them that I was visiting... lol. They were all so wonderful, and I happened to be there for senior dinner night... so I was able to share that night with all of my pledge sisters that were leaving. We also got to *finally* take a family photo. (we're in some sort of order... grandlittle, little, me, big, twin, twins little)

In the past two Fall rushes since yours, I had really hoped that people took a look at your story.

LOL, and I know that not everyone can be an awesome writer like you -- and not everyone can have such a stellar journalism teacher like you did!

Rush stories have changed a lot in the past few years, and while we try to make it so that the PNM's rush experience is one that's fair and unbiased, one can't help but wish that all rush stories could be like yours. Some of these stories, I don't know...seem pretty useless.

Yours was actually worth reading and I don't think we've had anything like it since!

curlygirly 08-02-2005 04:43 PM

aww thanks

aww... thanks for the compliments on my writing. I actually went back through the thread today reading over it... and it was like re-visiting this younger version of me. I had forgotten some of the thoughts and feelings I experienced during rush. It was definitely an exciting time that I don't want to go through again! LOL.

I haven't been active in greekchat since my first year in Kappa... I guess everything else got in the way, but it was definitely nice to read back on all this... and to have a record of my experience.

Oh, and I LOVE your signature!

mmcat 08-02-2005 10:36 PM

a very pretty family tree...
congrats ladies

Indie_Superstar 08-02-2005 11:17 PM

Curly, I LOVED your rush story.....even if having that big honkin' "KKG" in your signature DID kind of ruin the surprise, lol. But it sounds like you had lots of fun at rush, and you chose the house that made you happy, and that's awesome. By the way, which sorority did your roommate decide on in the end? Phi Mu, or Sigma Kappa?

curlygirly 08-03-2005 10:28 AM

hehe...oops!

i'm sorry about my signature giving it away! I didn't realize that once you made a signature, it automatically added it to all of your previous posts! OOoops.

And to update on my roommate... she ended up picking Phi Mu, and loving it. She was active the rest of her time at UF, and very involved with them. She was president of her pledge class, and even won an award from Panhellenic for being so involved her first semester. She herself 'grew' her very own little family tree, and we'd go out often with her little and my little... and just have fun. And throughout the years she would tell me that she realized she ended up where she needed to be.. that she wouldn't have fit in with other houses.... lol! And I think the same is true for me... ! :)

That's my favorite part about visiting the house--or even just running into sisters when I visit Providence! :D It's nice to be remembered like that.

#1 candidate for BEST RUSH THREAD EVER!

blueangel 08-03-2005 10:50 PM

I'm so glad this thread was reposted. I read it from start to finish tonight, and agree.. it is outstanding! I graduated from UF, so this really brought back memories for me!!!

KKG had just started when I was in college, and they didn't have a house back then. One of the girls in my dorm (Trusler) was in KKG, and she loved it!

Are you planning to join your local alumnae chapter?

Wow, that's awesome :) I'm really happy that you're happy in Kappa, and I'm also happy that your roommate is happy in Phi Mu. Does she know about GC? If so, get her to come on here and introduce herself, and better yet, hop on over to the Phi Mu forum......no, I'm not a Phi Mu myself, but I'm sure they're all very nice. :) This would have to be my favourite rush thread ever, because it contained TWO happy endings in one. :D

UF56 08-11-2005 10:19 PM

Curly,

Long time no chat...glad everything is going well for you....reread through your thread...brought back a lot of memories..keep in touch!!!:D

Hahaha! My sister's only a junior in high school, but I already told her that if she starts a GC thread she had better not mention her town in Georgia and her curly red hair because everyone will know who she is! carnation, it's like you read my mind. ;)

related to CurlyGirly's Kappa membership

Just had to post...

CurlyGirly came for a visit to Seattle & I took her by the Kappa house @ UW! The girls were so sweet - they took us on a tour of the house. It's beautiful!!!

My 1.5 yr old son was with us, too. Heh...I'm sure he'll love to tell his friends in 15 years that he was upstairs in the Kappa house, where guys are forbidden. And, funny that his first sorority house was not even MY sorority.... ;)

curlygirly 04-28-2006 06:32 AM

UW!!!

The UW house was GORGEOUS!!! And the girls were extremely nice and gracious... taking time out to give us a tour of the house and chat, even though they were in the middle of the event.

And yes... this was my first visit to another Kappa house... in my 4 or 5 years of being a sister... and it was a lot of fun!!! Traveling all the way to the other side of the country... and still having a 'connection' to someone. :)

Can't believe it's been so long since I started this thread!!!

BTW-- The Kappa house at UF is being renovated... the girls are living in the former KA house on fraternity row until the big unveiling in the fall. Should be very exciting... can't wait to see it!! :D

Hee. I love taking my newborn son to the chapter I advise to see all his "girlfriends." :) I tell them this is the only time it's acceptable to take him upstairs to the girls' rooms.

I've only ever been to one other Kappa chapter house -- the one where I now advise!

KSUViolet06 05-31-2006 03:02 PM

I don't know why, but I never read this thread until now. I think every rush thread should be like this. If every PNM was as tactfully honest as curlygirly was, there'd be no need to nickname the sororities in rush threads.

WhitGator 06-06-2006 12:06 PM

Wow...this thread is amazing! Thank you to Curly for keeping such a wonderful journal to inform and help others (such as myself.) I will be going through recruitment in a few short months at UF and this thread has introduced me to the process a bit more. I am extremely nervous and reading this made me nervous (and it happened awhile ago) so I can't imagine what I will feel like when I am actually there. Thank you so much for all the advice...especially to Curly to take the time out and log all of her experiences. Maybe if I don't find myself way too overwhelmed I will journal my recruitment experience. We will see! But once again thank you!

adpiucf 06-07-2006 09:57 AM

May I suggest that we sticky this thread as a wonderful example of a recruitment thread that maintains discretion throughout and concludes with a happy ending?

Ditto

I do believe that was the best rush thread I have ever read. And I personally liked the fact that I knew what sororities she she had to choose from. She didn't say anything negative about any one sorority and I felt like I knew what she was talking about better then XYZ ABC or purple blue pink or what the names from a tv show. (it was also cool to hear about her friend)

However it was a large greek university. I don't think if it were a 4 sorority university that naming them would be great throughout the thread. But listing them, at least in the beginning, wouldn't be bad if the recruit use the class and discression that CurlyGirly used.

curlygirly 07-08-2006 08:04 PM

more than 24,000 reads?? WOW!!!

I'm still amazed this thread has generated so many responses!!! (think it says more than 24,000 page views?!?!) Also love the fact that I can read back on my OWN life through this website!!!

I'm glad what I posted has been able to help out so many different girls thinking about/going through recruitment.

For the girl who talked about UF... remember I wrote this back in 2002. I know things have changed for UF recruitment, so make sure you do your research before then. Take mine as an "example"... not so much a guide. :)

Good luck!!! :):)

FSUZeta 07-14-2006 04:57 PM

curlygirly, just wanted to let you know that when i need a rush fix, i go read your thread. have you graduated or are you still at uf?

curlygirly 07-14-2006 09:37 PM

I graduated in Dec. 2004...

blackngoldengrl 07-15-2006 03:10 AM

Great recruitment story! I went to a small school in Pennsylvania, so our rush is totally different. Reading that story was exciting to me too, since I didn't get a chance to go through rush, but was invited through COB.

Stef the Pef 07-22-2006 05:41 AM

This is the first time I've ever read this thread. Wonderful story!

CuriousWildcat 08-03-2006 02:13 PM

I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this thread! I actually got anxious/happy as if it were currently happening!

curlygirly 09-04-2006 11:52 AM

WhitGator is a Kappa!!!

Hey Everyone...
I was in Gainesville this weekend for the first UF home game... and met WhitGator. She is now a Kappa! We took a pic... which I will post soon.

Turns out my twin Kappa sister knew WhitGator had posted to my rush thread... and she made sure to introduce us.

The girls had a tailgate with Delt before the game, and since their house is right across from the stadium, I stopped by with some other Kappa alums. That's when I met Whitney... and I *officially* felt old. I graduated almost two years ago... so I only recognized a handful of current sisters.

Either way... it was a fun story to share with everyone when I met WhitGator!!! :o

WhitGator 09-17-2006 01:48 AM

Yes, I was so lucky to meet Curlygirl at a Fraternity barbeque before our fist home game!! It was really cool to see how greekchat can unite people!!! One of the older sisters approached me and asked me if I was Whitgator on GC and I was like...umm...yes! And she introduced me to Curlygirl! I'm so excited to get my four years started at Kappa and I am having the time of my life right now! I can't wait to be initiated as a sister in a month...the girls are amazing and have been so welcoming to me! I love them all!!! The only downside is that right now we don't have a house because it is still under renovation but when its done...its going to be AMAZING!! Anyways, thanks to all who gave advice...it helped sooooo much!

First time reader here, but what an awesome thread!

I kinda feel cheated for being a dude and not getting a Recruitment experience like that! But then I thank God that men are less complicated. :)

carnation 03-29-2008 09:11 PM

Bump! I really like re-reading this thread.:)

smiley21 03-29-2008 09:21 PM

It has been said many times before, but I am going to say it again. Why isn't this thread stickied at the top?:)

This should be a "how to write a recruitment thread" manual for PNMs.

Agree 200%!

carnation 03-31-2008 07:29 AM

This is a wonderfully written thread but PNMs, please don't use the actual names of the chapters you have at your school. Some GCers have actually tracked down where a woman was rushing by tiny hints on her thread and--whether they meant to or not-- affected her recruitment.

Also, we now have an annual thread where the recruitment dates of all colleges plus the names of their NPC groups are listed. If you say you're rushing on Sept. 1 and name the sororities at your school and then drop even a little hint about yourself--like "I have curly blonde hair and I'm from North Augusta", there are people who might actually stalk you. Be safe!

gee_ess 03-31-2008 09:20 AM

First time reader of CurlyGirl's thread here - totally enjoyed it! If we can sticky it, we should make sure it is labeled as an example of discretion and respect so others will see immediately why it is a good one.

Also, I heartily agree with Carnation regarding the need for caution when writing about recruitment. Let's be realistic - this is the internet and not everyone is going to play fair.
