This has nothing to do with why I chose Sigma Kappa, but when you have 2 letters, it fits more nicely on a smaller shirt (now that average sized girls don't see the need to swim in XL shirts). When I was flyering for recruitment with some other Rho Gammas, (an AChiO and 2 Thetas) and we were talking about letters and they all said they don't like to wear letters because when you have three 4" letters, they go from armpit to armpit. If you get 3" letters, it fits very nicely, but they aren't as widely available as 4" letters. I remember being excited to go to Theta when I went through recruitment because their colors are black and gold and I am a huge Steelers fan! I liked how Alpha Chi Omega began in the School of Music when it was founded. I also liked their philanthropy. I thought I fit in, but it ended up not being the place for me. About the SDT looking like EAT, the SDTs embrace it at UMD. There's a shirt with Tony the Tiger (Frosted Flakes) that says "We're GrrrrrrSDT!" They also have a philanthropy event called "SDT your way through College Park, where restaurants give some of their profits to SDT's philanthropy if you eat there on the designated night. I also think they have a shirt that says "SDT your heart out". I was at a PHA meeting once and this kid who was running for SGA was talking about the chapter houses owned by the University and he mentioned "Sigma Alpha Tau" and I just cringed. The kid was obviously not Greek. I have a lot of pet peeves, but one of my biggest ones is when people say "EK" or write "EK". Especially people who should know better  and should have learned how to make Sigmas. |

I was advising today. and overheard a girl today say (while waiting outside for parties to start) that she was "for sure dropping all the ones with 3 letters because 2 letter sororities look better on shirts." Wow.

As for stupid PNM impressions, I remember visiting the sorority dorm with my sister when I was in high school. AOII was on the bottom floor with Phi Mu. When you walk in the dorm, you can look down the halls and see murals painted on the wall. AOII had a giant rose with a red frame around it. Phi Mu had this massive pink castle which I dubbed the "Magical Pink Castle" and remember telling people looked like someone had vomited Pepto Bismol on Cinderella's Castle. I swore I'd never join such a PINK chapter. In all fairness...they cut me!;) If there is significance to the pink castle for Phi Mu...someone clue me in. |

Actually, there is significance to it. First..Pink :) And there is a popular song for sisters called "My Phi Mu Castle" (written actually about the house at Delta Beta - UIUC :) (for another thread). It starts out... I have a Phi Mu Castle That's filled with treasures old... :) |

Just for fun I checked out their ADPi chapter to see if maybe this was a school-wide thing. Maybe my screen is off... or maybe it's at a weird angle, but I think it's sort of blue?? http://www.cofc.edu/greeks/adpi.html |

I think that's pretty cool for the houses to be the group colors. I was picturing what they would do with a SK house. Lavender with maroon shutters or vice versa?
As far as cutting or pledging a group for dumb reasons, I know people who have pledged and also not pledged groups based on the (unflattering) nickname others had for the house. |

On the topic though, when I went through rush there was a girl who swore she would only join a chapter whose suite was on the top floor of the panhellenic building. Fortunately for the Greek system, she dropped out of recruitment upon being released by the "top floor." |
Well, I definitely didn't pledge Sigma Kappa for its colors. I think lavender and maroon are hideous together. People during recruitment definitely talk about our house and how we're the Sigma Kattle (about ten years ago I guess we had some really heavy girls). Some of our members are eager to move away from that stereotype. I think we should all embrace it and get some of those sweatpants with MOO across the butt.
When I was going through recruitment, the girl behind me alphabetically was painfully a stereotypical sorority girl. I'm talking the whole nine-yards--big hair, bleached to the max, caked on makeup to point of not being able to see her real face, worrying constantly about her nails, critiquing everyone around her, just a nasty fake person. On the third or fourth day of recruitment when I was really starting to fall in love with Sigma Kappa, I overheard her talking disparagingly about Sigma Kappa and how much she hates it and hates going back, blahity-blah-blah-blah. My thought, "That sounds like confirmation that Sigma Kappa is the place for me." And here I am three years later. Don't know where that girl ended up and it's probably better that way. Also, ADPi has a really bad rep at our school. They have really low numbers and are fighting to stay open. I have a lot of friends in that house. They are super nice girls and I point every one that I meet in campus who's interested in pledging off-cycle their direction, but if you're an ADPi alum, the WSU chapter could use some help. How about stepping up to bat for them?! |
I might have posted this somewhere already, but there was a girl going through recruitment with me last fall who based who she liked best in order of how she liked the houses decorations/sofas/wall colors etc.

I actually don't dislike pink like I used to! It actually looks good on me since I'm blonde and extremely fair complexioned. |
My sister actually dropped Sigma Kappa because they did a Willy Wonka skit during rush and some girl did such a fantastic Veruca Salt impersonation that it freaked my sister out. She could only think about Veruca Salt girl when she thought about Sigma Kappa! Now that's a weird reason to cut a group.

My sister never was a big Willy Wonka fan, but I LOVE the original Gene Wilder extravaganza. I would go to town in that candy land with the chocolate river!!! I don't remember them doing a Willy Wonka skit when I went through.
P.S. I just remembered...they did it for open house. You got a golden ticket to tour Sigma Kappa. They changed their party after that year so I never got to see it! |

That is right. The girl who was purple had the name of Violet Beauregard. The oompa loompas squeezed the grape juice out of her.
I do remember Veruca Salt, and she was a rich, spoiled brat. She wanted her "oompa loompa NOW".:D |

I loved Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.
Anywho, the semester I went out for recruitment, there was a girl who was torn between Theta Phi and XYZ. She *really* loved Theta Phi because "the letters are soooo pretty," but she wanted to go XYZ so that when she sat with them at lunch, she could be envied by everyone else in the room. She went XYZ and depledged a week later. |
When I went though recruitment, I was intrigued by KKG and Tri-Delta. I think it was something about the multiple letters, like it meant something really special and interesting. I was totally clueless about greek life before college and I guess I thought some sororities had chosen their letters randomly?? At the time, I hadn't heard of any other repeat-letter sororities.
So half the curiousity has been satisfied, although it's not the reason *why* I pledged Kappa. I am still a little bit more interested in what Tri-Delta stands for than any other sorority. Silly but true! |
