Way to go Afrochic! I wonder if there is such a thing as a virtual graduation party..... It might be fun to have a GC Graduation party for anyone graduating this year.

Sidenote: Anyone study(ing) Deaf Studies/ASL Interpretation or something in that realm? if so can I get a PM, i have LOTS of questions.

QueenB09 08-03-2008 12:24 PM

I am a journalist student from Ohio State University. I would like to do broadcasting journalism in the entertainment field, like E! or BET or even MTV. I would also like to write for magazines and even start my own magazine for young black females. I have donw internships at a local news station, ABC13, and at a local radio station, 97.5/95.7. I would like to use my journalism talent/career to help the younger generations make positive decisions when it comes to their life. I have a younger sister and I see first hand how they think and what they find important, it is often sad. I know that a person does not have to be a journalism student to help the kids but I feel that it will be more effective since TV is the main source of getting information these days. I just really feel that as a young black professional woman ihave an obligation to continue to lend a helping hand so the black community can know its worth in the world.

Questions:
What is/was your college major(s)?
What is/was your college minor(s)?

FOR THE GRADUATES/WORKING FOLKS:
What are you doing now professionally?
How did your major(s)/minor(s) prepare you to do your job?
What internships did you do to get ready for your profession?

FOR THE CURRENT STUDENTS
What do you plan to do with your major?
What internships have you pursued to better prepare yourself for the working world?

Major: Social Work
Minor: Thinking about Psychology, but not entirely sure yet.

First, I plan to get my MSW/JD. I would love to be a Youth Advocate or a Juvenile Defense Attorney. I just feel like children get so overlooked and underrepresented in the legal system. IMO, there wouldn't be so many in detention centers, etc, if they had somebody who cared( and was able to do something legally for them) by their sides when facing the legal system.

I haven't done any internships yet(it took me a minute to find what I was passionate about and forget about the financial aspect of it), but I have applied for some and hopefully I get good news soon.:)

Social Work
Gerontology
I am working on getting my LMSW
Most of my class study helped me with my jobs. However, when I went into the Drug/Alcohol Rehab to work as a Counselor, I really wasn't prepared by my schooling because my professors tended to skip over this chapter of the DSM-IV. For some reason, they didn't even touch drugs/alcohol, their effects, the symptomology, anything to do with it.
I had internships at Nursing Home Facilities-both of them. They have helped me in in the current world of working in Home Health.

niknik03 01-16-2009 01:13 PM

Major: Accounting

I did an internship with the Department of Labor during the summer of 2007. After my internship was over a job position was open at an organization as a Human Resources Assistant. They saw some of the stuff I did at the DOL and thought I was a great worker. Hired me as a temp in Sept 2007 to see how it would go. Hired full time and graduated in December. May of 2008 I was promoted to Benefits Specialist and here I am.

Human Resources is far from my major, kind of, but I still deal a little with finance. Going back for my MBA in August.

I like HR alot, the company has its problems, but its a great postition to gain good work experience. I believe God placed me in places for great things to happen and I am looking forward to the many blessings that are yet to come. However, if he doesn't bless me anymore he has already done enough in my life and I will continue to praise him!

What do you plan to do with your major? Well, before this past month I planned on being a Cognitive Behavorial Therapist because of the fascination with the interaction between the brain and human behavior. Unfortunatley, after watching several TruTV shows with Forensic Psychologist, It is a field that I have been taken interest in.

What internships have you pursued to better prepare yourself for the working world? Well, a year ago I interned at the Three Rivers Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center for Outpatient Users who have completed the main program at the main hospital. I am also currently seeking going to NYC to work in the Make A Wish Foundation, but I am shy of some thousand dollars LOL! Wish me luck ladies.

I majored in biochemistry and did not have a minor.

I just graduated May 2009, and am starting graduate school in the fall. As far as internships, ever since I knew I wanted to be a professor, I've been doing research (the past 2 years). Also, while in graduate school I'm required to be a student teacher for a few years. Hopefully, I'll have enough experience in my field when I finish.

I just graduated in May from Southern University with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in English. I had the opportunity to do some research at LSU through the Pre-Doctoral Scholars Program.

I am currently working at Camelot Career College as the Housing Assistant, but waiting on the State to call me!

I'm going to grad school at Southern in the Fall for a M.A. in Mental Health Counseling.

Gotta get my Ph.D. in Clinical Psych so that I can help "trouble" urban youth. My biggest goal is to open my own school for African-American Youth with African-American teachers...it may sound racist, but I feel that OUR children need to be taught OUR history from OUR teachers! So to all my sorors that are teacher, counselors, administrators, businesswomen, investors....I'll be calling on you!

My major in college was Computer Science, class of 2008. I am currently pursuing my Masters Degree in Computer Science also.

I must say that I should've known long ago what I wanted to do when I was already playing around with computers in middle/high school and when I taught myself to write BASIC programming in middle school. Yet I started in Computer Engineering. Took me 1.5 years to realize that it wasn't the right aspect of programming for me.

I am now a Software Engineer, and I realize everyday that I am in the field that is perfect for me. I thank God everyday for allowing me to find such a great CAREER (especially in this day and age), but most importantly finding a career that I love doing and am actually good at.

To all young people I say take a step back and think about what it is that you truly love to do. What excites you and you find yourself getting caught up in for hours at a time without noticing the time passing.

Questions:
What is/was your college major(s)?
Sociology
What is/was your college minor(s)?
None atm, but looking into Psychology

FOR THE CURRENT STUDENTS
What do you plan to do with your major?
I want to be an Assistant District Attorney focusing on sexual assault crimes in mostly urban areas...
What internships have you pursued to better prepare yourself for the working world?
Currently I'm a Campus Police Cadet, but I plan to be working at group homes late on after college...

pshsx1 03-23-2010 08:26 AM

Hm. I thought I posted here.

Major: Civil Engineering (considering Construction Management) formerly Architecture
Minor: None.

I really want to go into either construction planning and management or transportation design and construction. I haven't totally decided yet. I'm leaning towards the former, though. Hence why I may change my major... again.

I haven't pursued any internships yet b/c I go to school ridiculously far away from home and I don't have a form of transportation at school. Sucks.
