LAblondeGPhi 09-15-2013 10:56 PM

OH man....

Sciencewoman 09-15-2013 10:56 PM

Sad face.

AOII Angel 09-15-2013 10:57 PM

I'm glad Kansas is gone. I thought she was tacky looking.

pbear19 09-15-2013 10:58 PM

Sigh. Miss NY was my least favorite of the top 5. Oh well. Glad Miss OK made it as far as she did, but I'm disappointed for her!!

LAblondeGPhi 09-15-2013 10:58 PM

I'm surprised. And sad for Kelsey.

Seriously - four Greeks in the top five, and the non-Greek wins?

thetalady 09-15-2013 10:58 PM

Nope, not a Greek this year. Miss NY is beautiful and her Bollywood dancing talent was very well done.

Katmandu 09-15-2013 10:58 PM

She is beautiful and talented! I liked her.

honeychile 09-15-2013 10:58 PM

Congratulations, Miss New York. Has the same state ever taken back to back titles before?

Sister Havana 09-15-2013 10:59 PM

Please tell me she apologized to Mallory for calling her "fat as fuck."

I do like that they played "There She Is, Miss America."

Katmandu 09-15-2013 11:00 PM

Yes, oklahoma won it back to back

TriDeltaSallie 09-15-2013 11:00 PM

So what were the final results, please?

Yep ... Mary Ann Mobley crowned Lynda Mead -- Miss Mississippis and Chi O sisters at Ole Miss.

DDDMomma 09-15-2013 11:01 PM

She is beautiful, well-spoken, and talented. Congrats to our new Miss America!

Oklahoma Jennifer Berry in 2006 and Lauren Nelson in 2007

IndianaSigKap 09-15-2013 11:04 PM

I wasn't really impressed the way they styled Mallory for the final crowning. The two piece black ensemble wasn't all that flattering and combined with chunky jewelry, black nail polish, and an ok hair do...well, it just wasn't Miss America.

TriDeltaSallie 09-15-2013 11:04 PM

Thanks!

This was fun! 'Night, fellow GCers...

PersistentDST 09-15-2013 11:11 PM

I figured Miss NY would win...I think quite a few of my early favorites didn't do themselves a favor in the talent portion. The singing left much to be desired for me...

I'm ready for Miss Universe on Nov. 9th! Always been a favorite to look at beautiful women from around the world!

lovespink88 09-15-2013 11:11 PM

Oh jesus, I hate being in a different time zone. Grr..

LAblondeGPhi 09-15-2013 11:22 PM

Oy... just read about this on one of the pageant boards:

Beauty Queen Drama! Miss New York Reportedly Called Miss America "Fat as [Bleep]!

Xidelt 09-15-2013 11:29 PM

Yeah, I read about the rude comment about Mallory Hagan's weight on yahoo. I thought her comment at the beginning of the pageant about sitting backstage with coffee and donuts was a shot back at Miss New York for what she said.

PersistentDST 09-15-2013 11:34 PM

Sigh...the bigots are on twitter right now saying Miss America is not "American." It's sickening! People don't know the definition of "Nationality."

And I read about her talking about Mallory Hagen's weight...she's a curvy gal and she should be proud! I'm not into the "Mean Girls" crap...

:( Why? Is it because she had ink? I liked that about her.....plus she's a servicemember. Kudos to her.

Football Fan 09-15-2013 11:39 PM

Carly Mathis is Miss Georgia. The song was meaningful to her because as a young teen she was quite overweight. At school she was teased and did not resemble the woman you see now. With doctor's help and change to a healthy lifestyle she overcame her weight and self esteem problems.

In interviews she has discussed her past health difficulties.

IndianaSigKap 09-15-2013 11:39 PM

The tattoo on Kansas' side was the serenity prayer. She was in seriously great shape, Army kind of does that to you. I would have been proud had she been Miss America. She is willing to serve our country, I am glad she made it as far as she did.

I don't particularly like her ink, but I thought her hair looked dead, overly bleached and processed.

UGH. HATE Mallory Hagan's outfit.

According to their Facebook, Miss New York (now Miss America) is a Sigma Kappa.

IndianaSigKap 09-16-2013 09:40 AM

You just beat me to it...SK sent out a tweet an hour ago:

"Congratulations to @MissNewYorkMAO Nina Davuluri, Alpha Tau Chapter at MSU, for winning the Miss America pageant! @MissAmerica2014 #sklove"

And why did no one from SK not mention this sooner??

They probably didn't want to claim her because of her unsportsmanlike conduct, but then she won. That's my guess.

FSUZeta 09-16-2013 09:43 AM

Miss New York Nina Davuluri won the Miss America pageant on Sunday night in Atlantic City, N.J., making her the first Indian American to win the contest. This buzzfeed article has a good look at the hate Miss New York has gotten. It's disguting that just because of her skin shade every assumes she must be middle eastern.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthi...american-woman

Mild correction for you.

What if she were of Middle Eastern origin, or Muslim, or born in a different country than the one she's in now, or anything else that makes her slightly different from Betty Sue Smith from Heartland, USA?

Absolutely nothing.

The problem isn't that these ignorant bigots think she might be any of the things listed above (full stop), but that any of those things mean she's a terrorist.

As an Indian-American, I'm very, very disappointed in her unkind comment about her predecessor, but was so very glad to see so much ethnic diversity in last night's competition. The (semi?) finalists included women from Indian (NY), Chinese (CA), likely half-Chinese (MN), and black (TX) backgrounds. I think I also noticed many other examples of ethnic diversity among all of the 53 contestants (as evidenced by names and appearances).

What accomplished young women we have representing our states and territories! A solider, many future doctors and lawyers, scholars (Miss Washington, D.C. is an Indian-American and a Phi Beta Kappa from UNC.), opera singers, and the list goes on and on! Amazing!

SoCalGirl 09-16-2013 11:02 AM

I think you give racist people too much credit.

When Vanessa Williams was crowned there were similar reactions to her win.

“The situation was investigated fully back in July and there is no validity to the story whatsoever. Miss New York spoke to Mallory Hagan to let her know there was no validity and to apologize if she was offended in any way.”

This is the statement that the Miss America officials made prior to the competition. Apparently, someone else in the group (not Miss NY) made the comment that was then attributed to the contestant.

SigKapSweetie 09-16-2013 11:13 AM

Congratulations to my Sigma Kappa sister! How exciting!

SoCalGirl 09-16-2013 11:13 AM

I want to add that SK NHQ may not have been aware before last night or this morning that Miss NY is a sister. I don't imagine NHQ staff obsessively check the affiliation of every pageant winner. Since I couldn't find anything that congratulated her when she won her NY crown I'm guessing nobody from her camp notified NHQ back then or before now.
