City of God

There is a new indie flick called City of God. It is Brazilian with subtitles. You guys, this movie is just awesome. It is out in limited release, but if you have the chance, definitely check it out.

More about the movie

Greetings,

I am by no means a movie buff, however here are a few of my top choices:

"The Visit"
Starring Hill Harper and Billy Dee Williams
The movie occurs in the visiting room of a jail cell where Hill Harper's charachter has been infected with AIDS (how is never communicated) and he is trying to mend fences with his family. The movie is powerful and well acted. I truly enjoyed this film.

"Like Water for Chocolate"
Foreign film that has all the passion and love that has been lacking in American film for a while. It is not as powerful as the book, yet it is still and awesome interpretation.

I've seen both films, they were good!

Sahara 04-02-2003 02:48 AM

love movies!

Love (or at least like) 'em:
Chasing Amy
12 Monkeys (own it)- still tryna figure it out
Mi Vida Loca
Chocolat (generally don't like love stories, but I could relate to the female lead)
Natural Born Killers
Fight Club
What Dreams May Come (thanks for the reminder RHOyal#1)
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (own it)
The Usual Suspects is one of my favorites! (own it)- don't think it's all that obscure, though. Same with these two:
Tombstone
The Untouchables

Utterly hated:
Magnolia!!!

I loved the movie and the book. It was just so good. I normally don't go for foreign films with subtitles (generally, because I like to do other things while I'm watching the movie) but I cought this movie on Bravo one day and fell in love. I have seen it about 15 times and read the book three times.

You're right the passion in this film is overflowing. The rose petal scene was the best in the film. It was refreshing to see a love story that didn't have the same overused storylines.

Some I have seen recently:

I think I might have posted this already but:

- City of God -- VERY good, but kind of disturbing also (in a social climate kind of way, lol).

Also:

- Roger Dodger - So hard to explain, but this movie was GREAT. It's about this neurotic dude who kind of overanalyzes everything, but is still so apathetic. LOL, see it is hard...but tight work nonetheless.

- Equilibrium - I just saw this last night. This movie was THE BOMB. It has Christian Bale (American Psycho) and TAYE DIGGS. It was pretty deep and had better fight scenes than the Matrix, imo.

- Bend it Like Beckham - SOOO good. I think it is still in theatres (I saw it in the theater last week). It's a coming-of-age movie about his Indian girl who plays soccer. I know the premise sounds really sucky and random but trust me, this movie is GOOD!

not good movies, but....

10 biggest movie flops in history....
i'm embarrassed that i saw "howard the duck when i was a kid"
hahahahahahahaha!!

The Italian Job with Mos Def, Donald Sutherland, Charlize Theron, and Mark Wahlberg.

Paradise359 08-17-2003 05:51 PM

S.W.A.T. & before that it was The Italian Job

1savvydiva 08-17-2003 06:02 PM

I watched "High Crimes" with Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman the other night, I was pleasantly suprised! I really enjoyed that movie.

I think my favorite suspense movie of ALLLLLL time would be "The Usual Suspects".....I have to get that on tape/DVD.

Pirates of the Carribean was the most recent good movie that I have seen. And I thought it was going to be stupid.

darling1 08-18-2003 05:12 PM

I also saw this movie. I think Jim Caviezal is a great actor!!

darling1 08-18-2003 05:15 PM

I had to think on this.....

Frida and Monsoon Wedding were the last 2 movies I saw.

For those who like visually pleasing movies, I think this was on e of the best. The colors were dynamic!!!

Frida was so profound and sad to me. In my studies I learned about Frida Kahlo and appreciated her guts and honesty which was displayed often times in her works. I found myself sad because some of the feelings she dealt with mirrored my own life.

I appreciated also that she was a woman who lived her life on her terms!!

ckretintress 08-25-2003 10:01 PM

I saw two good moies---28 days later and Freddy vs Jason

Conskeeted7 08-26-2003 09:38 AM

I saw Chicago the other day and thought it was great!!

The songs are still in my head...(singing) 'he had it comin...'

Sistermadly 08-26-2003 11:08 AM

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. That movie totally surprised me.

Darling1: wasn't Monsoon Wedding wonderful?! If you liked that one, see if you can get your hands on a copy of Bollywood/Hollywood. It takes place among the Indo-Canadian community in Toronto. It's a really good story with lots of great music.

enlightenment06 08-29-2003 10:52 AM

I just rented "Head of State" with Chris Rock. It was pretty alright.

For something more serious I recently saw "Phone Booth" which was excellent; unlike any movie I've ever seen.

LawyerGal 09-01-2003 04:06 PM

Denzel and Sanaa in "Out of Time"

The movie debuts this weekend.

Questions404 09-29-2003 03:52 PM

Sanaa gives me the creeps -- she bites her nails right down to the quick.

 How in the world do you know that?

Questions404 09-29-2003 06:08 PM

1. I went to a signing during the hype of some HBO movie and saw her chewing on her fingers while shaking hands and signing autographs. Anyone who touches a million different things and then puts her finger in her mouth to chew either the skin or the nail or both should wear gloves.

2. Watch LOVE AND BASKETBALL. She has the fingernails of my nine year old cousin who can't keep her fingers out of her mouth.

This movie was awesome! Loved it!

Gina1201 10-05-2003 06:52 PM

I saw the movie this weekend also. It was great!! A lot of different twists and turns that were unexpected.

TonyB06 10-05-2003 07:12 PM

I saw the movie this weekend. All I gotta say is there was one heck of a make-up artist on the set to make Sanaa Lathan look like a cracked out hood rat (in one scene). Didn't know a woman that fine could be made to look that uhm...cosmetically challenged.

the rest of the movie was arright.

MeezDiscreet 10-06-2003 02:24 AM

good movie

i, too, saw this movie and i really enjoyed it. i was on the edge of my seat trying to guess what the next move was going to be. i think they chose a perfect title for it.

funny part: when he's trying to get out of the hotel and runs into those other officers in the alley. (hopefully yall know what i'm talking about as i don't want to go into detail and spoil it for anyone.)

[hijack] That is hilarious that you noticed this!!! I HATE the way her fingertips are shaped. I used to work with a girl whose fingertips were shaped like that. Just weird. And I've never seen her in person like you have, just noticed it in movies. [/hijack]

I'm going to treat myself to this movie tomorrow night. It's been so long since I've taken myself out on a date. And I've not been to the movies by myself since The Wood. It's time.

HBO played Brown Sugar THE ENTIRE WEEKEND on almost all of its channels. You know I noticed her nails. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. :D  :p

msmonique 10-06-2003 05:36 PM

I enjoyed it!

Denzel look good as usual... it was especially nice to see Sanaa get (near) top billing in a movie with an Oscar winner and to portray a character with some dimension and depth ... in spite of her nails ;) I think this role will push her career forward ... Eva Mendes (spelling?) was good also ... I can't remember the last movie I saw her in... was it Training Day?

ClassyLady 10-08-2003 09:25 AM

I saw the movie and thought that it was really good. Denzel was really slick because I would not have been able to cover my tracks like that.

My only problem with the film was Sanaa's hair. That was the worst weave that I have ever seen. It was just horrrrrrible. It looked like a curly little creature was perched on top of her head. I expect better from her.

You're right, I wasn't too thrilled with her hair but I thought she did good. Denzel was slick as Crisco. I mean he was on top of everything even at the hotel, but even when they finally caught up with him he was still able play it cool. The movie gets two thumbs up!

Ideal08 10-08-2003 01:26 PM

Yeah, I have to say, this was a good one! Not predictable AT ALL! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Two pinkies up! :)

KnowledgeSeeker 10-10-2003 12:54 AM

the movie

I must admit the movie did keep me in suspense. It was great, and Denzel (despite wearing that same shirt ;) ) kept me crackin up while he was doing his thing. The alley scene was the funniest to me and all my friends that saw it :D .

*why does he always seem to play a police officer in movies ei: Training Day, Fallen, The Mighty Quinn

As for Ms Sanaa - YES that weave was HORRIBLE (i'm shocked that her hair was a mess cause she claims to be a girly-girl)(if anyone has the Love and Basketball dvd you can hear her talk about that her self with the commentary). Surprisingly and happily she had on tips or extentions or somethin on her nails cause they were not those stubby nubbs that she usually has. they were french manicured, business length, and looked really nice.

sorry so long - I tend to talk ALOT!:(

h2omoccasin 10-15-2003 11:01 AM

UH---- ?

I thought the movie was mediocre---- the game Sanaa's character was putting down was evident from the jump. Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of Sanna and Denzel but its a shame that black actresses and actors get few roles that aren't stereotypical or just plain weak. This movie should by-pass VHS, DVD, any type of pay channel and or cable--- it should go straight to Veiw Master. Whoever wrote the script should be beat with it.

And make-up, Sanaa's was so horrible-- caked on foundation, it didn't match-- you could tell where it started and stopped ---it did not do her justice --- I was distracted the entire movie just like I was distracted while watching Rich Man's Wife with Halle Berry--her wig was on crooked the entire movie- daag can these talented sister's get some love from the hair and make-up folks.

prayerfull 10-16-2003 12:15 PM

AWESOME MOVIE!!!

Mr. Prayerfull and I saw it last weekend and we were totally in suspense the entire time.

Ideal08 11-02-2003 10:20 PM

ttt

I'm looking for movies to take myself to see each Monday. Tomorrow, I'm either going to see Wonderland or Mystic River. I also want to see Girlhood, so I can take my girls here at the school to see it, too.

What have y'all been watching? I went to see Out of Time and liked it. I also really loved Kill Bill Vol. 1. Can't wait for Vol. 2!

Ideal08 11-05-2003 03:57 PM

Ok, Wonderland was good!! I love movies that are based on real life. Good flick!

I also saw Scary Movie 3 last night. It was funnier than I imagined it would be.
