I thought overall the music was magnificent. Very English/British. (And no "Goodbye England's Rose" from Sir Elton, praise be.) The Parry "I Was Glad" that was sung as the bride's processional was written for the coronation of Edward VII and was also sung at George V's coronation. The music has to be considered in context, I think -- both in terms of what is considered appropriate (and traditional) for a royal service in Westminster Abbey and in terms of the acoustics in the Abbey. A chord can reverberate for six seconds in there. Any music that is too fast becomes a jumble of sound. That's why even the hymns can seem slow -- they have to be. For what it's worth, I read that most of the music was picked by the bride and groom. Quote:

i'll just leave this super adorable photo here... |
oops.....i said prince philip, but i meant to say prince charles. that he is a huge admirer of parry. i think that the music played at diana's and charles' wedding was much wore weddingish:
from yahoo answers. The music played at Charles and Diana's wedding were the following fanfares, hymns and anthems: The first piece of music was 'Fanfare Royale', by Major W. Jackson (played by the State Trumpeters) During the bridal processional: 'Trumpet Voluntary (The Prince of Denmark's March)', by Jeremiah Clarke During the ceremony: 'Christ is made the sure Foundation', by Henry Purcell; 'I vow to thee my country', words by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, music by Gustav Holst; 'I was glad', by Sir Hubert Parry; and 'Let the people praise thee', by William Mathias (specially composed for Diana and Charles's wedding) During the signing of the register: 'March from the Overture to the Occasional Oratorio', by Handel as well as 'Let the Bright Seraphim', sung by Dame Kiri te Kanawa and 'Let their celestial concerts all unite', performed by the Bach Choir During the recessional: 'Fanfare, Rejoicing', by Major A. Richards and 'Pomp and Circumstance, March No. 4 in G', by Edward Elgar and i don't care for many of the fascinators-they look too much like clown hats. queen elizabeth has stunning skin! |

It's Beatrice, looking a little disgruntled.
The reception dress! http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lk...wze6o1_500.jpg |

my criticism was not the hymns-it was the processional and recessional.

Did anyone else wonder if they played the Chicken Dance at the reception?

I read on Yahoo! that, nine days ago, WIlliam and Kate rowed out to where Diana is buried, and they spent the day there. I can only add that it would be such a lovely moment to share. |

this morning on the today show, it was mentioned that the flowers in the lace on kate's dress were the flowers of the countries of great britain.

I am just loving that frowning flower girl is all over the web:

Loved Kate's wedding dress and her reception dress. Very elegant & classic. I was pleased she didn't do an over-the-top gaudy monstrosity. The tiara was also a perfect fit. I read somewhere it was the same tiara Queen Elizabeth was given on her 18th birthday.
As for Harry's girlfriend Chelsea Davy (sp?), I thought she looked terrible. The color was not a flattering one for her and her hair looked like hell. She looked like a girl who rolled out of bed & bundled her hair under a hat thinking no one would notice. |

Does anyione know why there's an icon in Westminster Abbey? It's shown during the singing of "God Save the Queen". I was under the impression that icons are only properly seen in Orthodox Churches or by members.
Also, at what point did the front piece of Catherine's veil get thrown over the tiara? As much as I loved her dress, the veil over the tiara bit bothered me. Lastly (for now), I heard the talking heads pushing for a Prince Harry/Pippa Middleton match. Can you just imagine the Middletons' response to that?! They'd be cartwheeling down the aisle! |
Harry and Pippa would be cute together, but a little weird. I like her more than Chelsy, that's for sure.
|
When "God Save the Queen" was playing I totally recognized the tune to some song we (Americans) sing. (Can't think of it right now for the life of me). I was like "why do we have a song to that tune" then I was like "duh Brianna the founding fathers of American came from Britain". Oh lordy, good thing I was at home by myself and not in front of my students. LOL.
As for Chelsy, she looked disheveled and hungover for the wedding. IMPO. |

That would be "My Country Tis of Thee"

Has anyone caught any pictures of Pippa from last night?
Too much tan, but... http://l.yimg.com/a/p/sp/tools/med/2...1304186464.jpg |
And just for fun, what do you think the parents (and/or grandparents) of the latest Royal Newlyweds are doing tonight?
I think the Middletons will have a few drinks and send out for pizza. |

I think, though, you'll only see an iconostasis (icon screen separating the altar area from the rest of the church) in Orthodox or Eastern Rite Catholic churches. |
her father lifted her veil.
my husband and i decided that chelsy had grabbed harry before the wedding and had a quickie behind the church. that's why she looked so disheveled. btw, the today show interviewed a designer in california who has already produced a copy of kate's wedding dress. he said that he had been contacted by lord and taylor. after the interview the co-host said that the copy would sell for 5-800 dollars-that doesn't sound right if it will be sold at lord and taylor! |
Monique Lhullier has released her newest bridal collection, which includes a Catherine and a Pippa style- the Catherine dress is very nice, imo. Sleeves and all.

And I agree with you & your husband about Chelsy! On top of everthing else, her roots looked huge! Surely a royal wedding is something for which one has her roots done! |

There were LOTS of women with bad hair. Seriously, if you are wearing a hat, get some gel, slick it into a bun or side pony, put on the effing hat and call it a day. Not hard yo.

I couldn't identify the song either. :p
I wore my tiara tonight. :) I couldn't help it, I'm still in the spirit! It was so fun and festive but I wish I'd had a viewing party to attend (and no work the next morning). |

FWIW, I've never seen one as a permanent fixture in the sanctuary proper of a Presbyterian, Methodist or Lutheran church. I've seen them in chapels -- particularly chapels intended mainly for personal prayer -- and in the main sanctuary only on particular occasions. I may be overstating this, but I wonder if (at least among the Presbyterian contexts where I've seen them used) their use is largely due to the influence of the Taizé Community. A Taizé-style prayer service is exactly the sort of context in which I've seen them used. I know of a number of Anglican/Episcopal and Catholic churches that have them -- they are used in much the same way as statues (or like could be seen in Westminster Abbey). I can't think of an Anglican or Catholic church where they are as prominent as they would be in an Orthodox church, with one exception. The San Damiano cross has a very strong Franciscan connection, and I know of a number of Catholic churches where the central crucifix is a San Damiano cross. As for personal use, this Presbyterian has three icons -- the Old Testament Trinity, Christ Pantocrator and a San Damiano cross. |
