AuburnMom08 08-14-2009 11:29 AM

Thanks for the info, I had heard the term before and vaguely knew what it meant but I mentioned to my daughter that maybe some of the girls she loved who got cut after yesterday would get a snap bid and she didn't even know what that meant so they obviously haven't discussed it.

AuburnMom08 08-14-2009 11:35 AM

Oh my that quota business is confusing! All I know about my daughters group is they can take 60 new girls.

lawgal 08-14-2009 12:08 PM

Okay, if the sorority makes quota but are still under total, can they snap to total?

AZ-AlphaXi 08-14-2009 12:17 PM

No .. snap bidding is only for filling quota. What they can do is COB to total after all the formal recruitment bids have been given out.

lawgal 08-14-2009 12:28 PM

Too bad the cob girls could not participate in bid day activities.... It sounds like a lot of fun. Jill Moore had posted someplace (facebook?) that total at Auburn was average chapter size, and said that roughly half the sororities would be under total at any one time. (Of course that doesn't rally jive with what you hear about very few Auburn sororities participating in COB)

KSUViolet06 08-14-2009 12:32 PM

I see today is Pref! Best of luck to everyone today.

I hope everyone attends their parties today and gives everyone a chance!

gardensyl 08-14-2009 01:01 PM

Pref. day at last, good luck to all pnm's, and sorority gals and their moms. I hope everything will work out well tomorrow and that all of Auburn's pnm's have a happy outcome. I'm with auburnmom08, I miss my daily chats with my girl.

perfectinpurple 08-14-2009 01:41 PM

Good luck to everyone on Pref day!! How exciting that many of us will have new sisters tomorrow!!

There are some excellent sororities that COB at Auburn due to the fact that they have seniors graduating mid year, and some girls go on alumni status for various reasons. So even if there is a top sorority that gets quota every year, they still often participate in COB to get back to chapter total after experiencing normal attrition. Auburn has always had a large number of students from GA and my understanding is, when speaking with members of various chapters, there is a higher rate of girls taking alumni status this year due to economic reasons. Out of State tuition + sorority has become too much of a stretch for some families.

KSUViolet06 08-14-2009 03:07 PM

Random question for Auburn peeps:

Is COB something that's advertised? Like, are there ads or sign-ups for it? How does it work?

I'm asking because I know at some of the other SEC schools, it seems like if there is COB, it's not something that's advertised and you have to know somebody to know that a chapter was having it. I was wondering if it was the same at Auburn.

phimusam 08-14-2009 03:26 PM

COB is "advertised" on the Panhellic web site. I don't think you can get to the recruitment schedule without seeing it.

awkward1 08-14-2009 03:27 PM

KSU - I don't know the answer to your question but what I do know is that there has become less of a stigma at Auburn regarding COB now that some of the top sororities are participating. My gut feeling is that with the number of girls taking alumni status, moving back to their home state, or graduating and the higher cost of the new chapter rooms will necessitate more COB opportunities. But that is pure speculation and not based on any insider information whatsoever.

I imagine it is done by personal invitation (women invite friends), or women give their name to Panhellenic and the names are offered to the groups and there isn't a lot of parties or advertising. Not public or open parties and advertising, just women who have expressed interest and the feeling is somewhat mutual.

Could you imagine if XYZ had a COB party and 100 women showed up for maybe 10 spots? Lots of work and it seems much easier to invite the girl Suzie met in French class from out of state she's already vetted over for a meal and an activity.

FSUZeta 08-14-2009 04:21 PM

the girls interested in COB sign up thru panhellenic and then the sororities might contact them.

Not necessarily. While you can sign up for it the best way, I would think, is to be invited by someone you know in a sorority.

My daughter was a transfer sophomore who dropped out of rush last year before pref and 6 weeks later she met some XYZ girls and they started asking her if she would be interested in joining them and she said yes that they were one of her favorites during rush. They acted surprised that they had cut her before lol but anyway, they introduced her to some other members and she and a few other girls tagged along on a few events with them and all but one of those 4 girls accepted bids to join in November. The 4th wasn't offered a bid only because of her grades. And this is one of the sororities you hear about being a favorite on campus. She did find out later that at least 2 girls who accepted bids after regular rush had dropped out - 1 moved back home and another transferred to another school. Not sure if thats how they got in those spots or not but nevertheless, it worked out for the best and she loves it.

MSKKG 08-14-2009 07:22 PM

My friend's daughter got invited back to her top 3 favorites for pref--she is beyond thrilled!

FSUZeta 08-14-2009 07:48 PM

i didn't mean to infer that someone who knew someone might not be invited to a cob event. i should have stated that as an additional option. thanks auburnmom08, for pointing that option out.

AuburnMom08 08-14-2009 08:10 PM

Just wanted to mention it in case any Auburn PNMs were reading. :)

AuburnMom08 08-14-2009 08:11 PM

I got a text from my daughter about an hour ago that said "Rush is over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

lol they are all so tired.

This is so true... pnms tend to think that when they get cut, the entire chapter is looking at pictures of them, enumerating their shortcomings even laughing at them or scorning them, when in reality, many of the members are not even fully aware of everyone who is cut. I can well believe that women in a large school who befriend a new potential member are surprised and perhaps even befuddled to find that she was cut by their own chapter during formal rush.

AuburnMom08, I love your daughter's story, and so glad you are here this year to show the craziness of the first year on the other side of rush. It is really NO easier to be on the other side, and in fact, just as difficult.

I hope that pref rounds go well and that we hear of some happy endings.

True...i think at schools with over a thousand girls going through recruitment, there is no possible way to remember every single girl your chapter cut! In my chapter, though, I remembered EVERY single girl who we cut, every girl who cut us and where every girl pledged. Only about 200 people went through rush each year so it wasn't so difficult. I wouldn't laugh at anyone, but I would admit to laughing at some of their pictures after staring at them for hours on end during bid sessions

You realize that this doesn't really make sense? If there are more girls of a certain type, no matter how great they are, they are less outstanding. And while there are some girls who fit the pattern you've described, it's probably not as common as girls who are interested in "top" legacy chapters if those chapters retain them.

I agree with you that it would be nice if other chapters could learn that a girl was no longer attending her legacy chapter.

I hope things work out for your daughter.

The new Sorority Village is amazing!

Just returned from helping at Auburn and I was soooooooo impressed:) The sorority village is great!!
Our Gamma Phi digs were especially classy - sorry, I know I am partial! And dang - again I know I am partial - but I was in awe of my collegian sisters there - so proud of them! Strikingly gorgeous! And I saw so many cute white dresses today!!
Amongst the PNMS, I'd say about 80% were in black or black pattern/print or another darker color dress (navy, forest, purple)...though the lighter colored dresses I saw were cute, it did look almost out of place to see girls here and there in light colored dresses...
And the shoes......OMG:eek::eek::eek:....I cannot tell you how many of the girls were wearing "CMFPs"!!!! Three inch heels seemed to be pretty common from what I could see. The shoes were adorable but the heels were too high IMHO! okay, so I'm old and in love with my comfy naturalizers:D
There were about 60 girls at each of the four pref parties that were each an hour long...and one of my local girls was preffing Gamma Phi - woohoo!:p There was a thundershower just after all the PNMs had gone home after the last party!
Oh and I heard quota would be 55.....

honeychile 08-14-2009 11:13 PM

Before the actual numbers and all come in, I think we should all thank EVERY sister and alumna who took the time to recruit the women of their school for their sorority. Y'all are AWESOME!!!

Honeychile-you are an absolute peach! To think of even thanking the girls shows how great of an ADPi sister you are! I want to join you in saying "Thank You" to women of ALL of the NPC organizations because, no matter the letter-we're all Greek together! Whether a girl joins my sorority or not, I'm excited that that is ONE MORE girl to help raise money for a worthy philanthropy! Yay for Greeks making a difference!

Yep, they do it every year and it's a nice way to find out where the girls you wrote recs for ended up.

Some people are freaked out by it here, but I love it.
