Ok, so I am dying to know what happened in the meeting!

HeavenslilAngel 10-16-2001 12:34 PM

Yes we have a time table. I don't know all of it since i'm not anything important as far as holding offices go so my facts are kinda limited. We have been in want to mode since our founding. I'm not a founder of the local sorority, but I will be a founder of our chapter of whatever national sorority we go to. I'm so excited! :)

wishinhopin 10-16-2001 02:34 PM

Hi everyone!

I have to say, I think the meeting went really well. John- the faculty person I met with- is an active alum in a BGLO, so he definitely understands the benefits that come with a strong Greek system. He told me alot about how Greek life at UCSC is being reformed, and he explained how the new processes will work. He also seemed really really impressed with the amount of information I provided him with. I guess TKE and another IFC frat have expressed strong interest in colonizing here, but no other NPC sororities. This is particularly exciting to me because I want my sorority to have a brother frat to do stuff with, and Gamma Phi kinda has a monopoly on both of the existing frats I've mentioned before. He's going to be the faculty advisor for me, and he's going to get in touch with NPC this week. I honestly can't think of a better person to have helping me, he obviously has a good handle on not only how to do this but also why it's so important to me. He said he was also going to call a colleague of his- the Greek life advisor at UCSB I think- and get his input on how this process works. I'm supposed to write him a letter expressing my interest so he can show it to the appropriate higher ups, and we're meeting again next Tuesday at 2. Things are all kindof jumbled up in my head right now because I'm so excited, so if I think of anything else I'll be sure to post right away!

maggieaxid 10-16-2001 02:40 PM

Great Job Corina! You are going to be such a great asset to any GLO!

I feel awfully nervous all of a sudden. Things are now mostly out of my hands, and I hate feeling out of control of something that has become such an important project to me. It's my baby right now ya know? I'm also nervous because Mary from Gamma Phi is going to be extremely involved in this, and I can't help but be worried that she doesn't want this to happen and thus will not be of assistance. I'm getting paranoid and worrying that she's going to sabatoge it or something. I honestly can't imagine why an organization wouldn't want to come to campus. Well, I guess I can. Our statistics are great- lots of interested people but not many available spaces. But my school's reputation regarding Greek matters is less than welcoming. Apparently, up until something like ten years ago, UCSC sent letters out to all of the national frats and sororites expressing their complete lack of interest in allowing colonization- ie they basically told them to stay away! But I think this will work out well. I hope I hope I hope!!! Thanks for listening to me vent everyone!

PenguinTrax 10-17-2001 09:40 AM

Corina,

It sounds like the university is behind the expansion and once they tell the NPC about it, there will be no stopping it. Don't worry about your friend. She is an intern and reports to the 'boss' who, as it so happens, is in favor of your proposal.

Keep the faith!
Barbara

maggieaxid 10-17-2001 09:45 AM

if "mary" is really your friend she will want you to succeed no matter what. Even if it maybe in oposition to what her organization wants. I think you should include her in the process, maybe she can convince her chapter that this is a good idea. You are doing a great job, just let the process work itself out.
- Maggie

shadokat 10-17-2001 10:10 AM

I'm with Barb on this one. Sounds to me like you and John had a great meeting, and that he is behind you 100%, becoming your advisor and such. While Mary may play a role, she's just the underling, and if John wants this to happen, and it sounds as if he does, then once you do the expansion process, things will just roll the way they normally do :)

You're doing such a great job Corina, and I couldn't be prouder of you!!

amycat412 10-17-2001 12:17 PM

Mary's JOB is to help with this, and if she doesn't, she will have to answer to John. Its John who really counts here, he will be the one supervising Mary.

Keep in touch with him, let him know you want to be in on it every step of the way--explain that its your baby and you're nervous and would be happy to do anything at all that can help.

You're doing great! Hang in there!
Amy

mmcat 10-17-2001 07:36 PM

keep it up

it all sounds so good.
don't let your fears get to you. it is your baby.
stay on the path. when it's done, it will be well worth your while. You know that.
be brave and hang in. we are with you.

aephi alum 10-17-2001 08:38 PM

Sounds like everything's going well... don't be nervous :) As far as those letters saying "stay away from UCSC" - Gamma Phi colonized anyway, I think you said there's a national fraternity already on campus, and 2 more have expressed interest in colonizing... plus, 10 years is a long time. Ancient history... ignore it.

In you, I see the spirit of the founding sisters of my local sorority. They'd wanted to go national, but Panhel denied their request... a lot of people would have just given up, but they formed a local sorority, and 2 years later they got their wish and we became part of AEPhi. They didn't give up, and neither should you!

You are amazing - keep up the good work! :)

wishinhopin 10-17-2001 09:42 PM

Thank you all so much for your support, I can't say that enough. As of right now, the status of Greek life on campus:
1 multicultural frat and one 1 multicultural sorority
Gamma Phi Beta
Theta Chi
TKE, Pike, and one Hispanic oriented GLO are all expressing interest in having fraternity colonies on campus.

When I was in the meeting, John told me that it looked as though, including me, there was 4 interests in new GLO on campus. I was so relieved when he told me that the other three were frats! I know I should be happy, the more the merrier, but right now I want my project to get completed. After my stuff is taken care of I really hope we can get more Greek life on campus. I'm going to revise my letter to NPC and take it to John for our meeting on Tuesday....is there anything else I need to do? I swear, if I put as much effort into my schoolwork as I have been into this sorority, I would be set! Oh! We have basically been established as a local sorority on campus- only one more form needs to be turned in, and I wrote an amazing constitution (if I do say so myself), and I wanted to share with you our name for now. Obviously this will change if we affiliate, but as of right now we are Nu Beta Omicron- NBO. Never Be Ordinary. I think it's a good founding principle for what is going to be something very very different on my campus. I'll keep you posted!
love, Corina

greeklawgirl 10-17-2001 09:45 PM

Congratulations! You are a very clever and enthusiatic young lady...an asset to any GLO!:D

carnation 10-17-2001 10:35 PM

This is so much fun reading your updates! When (not if) you get your new chapter, I'll kind of feel like it's a Greek Chat chapter--put together with support from all the GLOs!;)

Optimist Prime 10-17-2001 11:07 PM

You go!!! Here is a tip though. Don't worry about the monopoly the other sorority has on the frateritietes. Guys love meeting new girls. Especially if girls make first contact. All you have to do (which should probably be some one else's job since youre so buys) is to call and say you want to have a mixer. We love that. Theta Chi should be cool with it. We like girls. Plus the other interest groups. I'm pledging a colony, and when we were in the interest group stage we merged with another interest group, and another couple guys that were working for another fraternity. So the fraternity interest groups might be interested in hanging out with you guys. Best of luck!!!

Optimist Prime.

wishinhopin 10-19-2001 11:19 PM

I'm getting a little nervous about my meeting! Technically, my public school can't reject an NPC chapter can they? Do you think any NPC sorority will want to colonize? Aaaagh I'm just being low self esteemish!!!

Peaches-n-Cream 10-20-2001 12:16 AM

Corina,
Don't let insecurity and self doubt get the best of you. You have come so far in such a short amount of time. You are doing great. If you stay positive and focused, you will accomplish any goal that you set for yourself including this one. :D

mmcat 10-21-2001 09:45 AM

You have every reason to believe that this will work out for you, and you have all of us here cheering you on!! Keep your chin up, babe! We're all behind you!!

maggieaxid 10-23-2001 07:16 PM

So has anyone heard anything yet?

wishinhopin 10-23-2001 08:59 PM

Hey all,

I had my second meeting with John today! I wrote up the letter he asked me to write, expressing my interest, and I got the signatures together of all the girls who are also interested. It was a quick meeting, but he basically said he was going to get in touch with NPC and figure out the format of the info letter they want, and he was going to get to work gathering campus stats (ie, number of female students, number of greek orgs, etc). Sometime like early next week he's going to try to get a conference call going with me, him, my friend Jennifer (a co-founder), and NPC, so we can figure all this stuff out. The best part was when he said, "so we're really doing this?!" and I explained to him that this was kinda my baby and I couldn't help but be nervous now that it was mostly out of my hands, but I was excited. I just hoped that this would all come together. And he told me that it was definitely happening and things would be great!!! In addition to this, I can't imagine why an NPC group wouldn't want to colonize here- at least a couple will most likely be interested right? Oh, when I was there, I saw Mary, and things were a little akward but mostly ok. She told me to call her if I needed anything, and I feel that she was sincere. I'm soooo happy!!!!

greeklawgirl 10-23-2001 09:04 PM

I'm so excited for all of you! I cannot believe the progress you've made in such a short time. You're making history here, and I'm so happy that all of us here on GC had a part in it...even if it was rather small.

Let us know when you hear anything further! YAY!

AGDLynn 10-23-2001 09:51 PM

GO GIRL!

I am so impressed with your go-to-it-ness!!

When you finally graduate into the "real world", this will definitely impress employers..if they had any sense, lol!

mmcat 10-23-2001 10:45 PM

one step at a time

one step at a time. you can tend to get yourself frightened if you go too far too fast. just keep going and you will be thrilled with your gain. i believe in you and i think all folks here do too. be smart and be brave.
it will be giant!

Any updates?

maggieaxid 11-02-2001 02:17 PM

Any new updates?

wishinhopin 11-02-2001 02:41 PM

So it's been over a week and I haven't heard from John, so I'm going to call him today. I've been so busy with Halloween and midterms that there was no way I could keep sorority stuff on the top of my priority list. But now that my schedule has calmed down I'm going to jump right back in and make sure the ball is still rolling!

bruinaphi 11-02-2001 02:42 PM

Can't wait to hear the update. Let us know what John says!
