Open House Take One
Okay so today was CRAZY! 8am class, found out that a person I went to high school with was in said class, grabbed coffee, chemistry class, got home, went over to a friend’s house for a study group, found out her car wasn’t starting, ran back to my apartment, got on shuttle to recruitment. This was a fun day, oh wait no. The shuttle had nine girls living in the same apartment complex as me. They seemed pretty nervous. I was feeling alright at this point. The shuttle unloaded and we walked to the student union. All the groups were congregating together and I first realized how many people were there. My Rho Gamma said that almost 600 had registered. 400 had registered last year. After roll call, we were sitting around waiting. The girls next to me asked a few questions about Greek life. Some were pretty funny, like if they had each person memorized to other more general questions. I must look like I know something because all their questions were directed to me. We began with the two sororities farthest off of Greek Row, Sun Devils and Beavers.
For those who like details: I wore a brown tank top with a brown and white sweater over. This was paired with jeans and wedge sandals. I know that may sound weird but it is cute.
Sun Devils: This was one I had received a letter of recommendation for. I had also been to elementary school with a girl in this chapter. I hadn’t talked to her in years, but in a class of 19 students, you are pretty close. Waiting outside was killer. There were tons of cars going by honking horns or yelling, ick. The Rho Gammas did a one minute knock and we were all hushed. Sun Devils called each of us by name usually alone but occasionally in pairs. I happened to be in pair. The first sister was very energetic, always talking, hardly let us get a word in. The second was much more laid back. There seemed to be a large mixture in this house. The sisters bumped three or four times. Each sister seemed to put more attention of the other girl when they heard that I was a sophomore. I felt more like a guest at this house than at home, so I didn’t mind. I found it interesting that there was no cheer at the end unlike my last campus. I don’t know how I feel about this house and whether or not I want to return.
Beavers: After last year, I felt weird about this sorority. I know each chapter is different, but it was still hard for me to question if this was the place for me. The house was gorgeous! I plan on posting a picture of it even if I do not pledge here. It had rained on and off today, so the lawn was muddy and a few girls found that out the hard way. Beavers also called us in by our names in pairs. The girl I was paired with was a junior transfer and tried to dominate the conversation. She had a lot of questions. She talked about being older in almost every aspect of the conversation. Many of the girls and I were similar either in major or because of outside activities. We talked about sports a lot. The PNM I was paired up with kept talking about how athletic she was, almost too much. I don’t know if I want to return or not.
Bears: I had graduated from high school with a girl in this sorority. I had asked her about this school and if she had liked it, but never told her I was transferring or going through recruitment. I hoped it would not be awkward. The groups lined up in two lines down the walkway and hushed when the Rho Gammas knocked. With the silence, I suddenly felt calm. My nerves were gone. I don’t know if the lack of sleep or food was the culprit or if the adrenaline had worn off. I waited to be called. A sister walked into the doorway and called my name. I was going in solo! I would always rather be alone than paired! We walked through the dining room and sat down near the far way. The room was echoing and I had to yell to be heard. Somehow, I really didn’t mind and normally a lot of noise would be a problem for me. The first girl seemed really nervous, but was still awesome. The second girl was better. Not only was she the first sister’s big but she and I matched in personality perfectly. We talked about all the academic help. She was a third year in my major and we talked about professors, which one was the best etc. The third girl was even better. She was the chair of community service (I messed up on that title). Service is a huge thing for me. I love to be involved, which we talked about at length. The fourth girl, I want her to be my best friend. We originally talked about being involved. After a minute, she looked at me sheepishly and said., “I am so happy you are saying you want to be involved. The last girl I talked to only talked about wanting to be Greek to party. We go out, but, I mean, not every night and that is not what this organization is about.” I fell in love. This house was me! Bears was the house where they have majors in study groups, very very involved, doesn’t matter if you party, just everything about it. I know what I just described can describe a lot of houses. Bears flat out told me. I think this is why my nerves went away. I knew I was in a good place. At the end, they introduced their housemother, who is freaking adorable! I saw high school girl as I was leaving and she waved. I not only am hoping to return to this house, but am practically praying.
Trojans: I was floating instead of walking to this house. Stood outside in lines as per usual. I was starving by this point. Everyone was talking about food. Thankfully this was the last house. At this house, the sisters came out in pairs and called three PNMs. Two PNMs went with one sister and the other PNM went with the other sister. I was solo again at this house. The first girl was okay. She seemed to be really distracted by the wall behind me. The second girl was great. She pledged as a sophomore and she was a transfer! We talked about majors and being involved and SHOES! She also described Fathers Weekend, which I would love to do! The third girl wasn’t that great. I have a feeling this was her first year for recruitment. Near the end, I noticed her shoes and we began talking about a shoe sale near by. All in all, not a great visit, but I had more feelings here than at Sun Devils or Beavers.
