I had said I mostly agreed with your list earlier so I was pointing out that both of us (collectively) would strongly disagree with his ridiculous statements. And not knowing Pere Ubu hardly makes anyone less hispter, just as someone not knowing Animal Collective in 20 years won't either

sorry if my quoting your post was misleading...i meant it as support for the guys ridiculous statements...

No worries, guy - it was quoting the post that made it seem like a response, since that's the general protocol I suppose. It does explain why I was confused, though - it didn't make sense in the context I took it, so no worries.

The guy's list is pretty awkward though, I'll agree - the most interesting part is that he's sort of committed meta-irony, since his list basically takes to task the "lying hipster" (who presumably only likes music because it fits an image, and not on its merit alone) by only referencing popular indie music, creating an image of distancing himself by hating the music based on its image or following, and not on its merit alone.

I guess the short version is, the dude is trying too hard - just like it's OK if you don't adore the Panda Bear album and don't find Animal Collective's noise worth the listen, it would be understandable if a few of the CDs hit the list. But to basically take the contents of most reputable music sites even beyond the "Pitchfork Sphere of Influence" and invert it is just a douchey move, meant to spur blog posts and smug smiles, to my mind.

Gotta represent Louisiana with these bands (though most arent new...)

Benjy Davis Project
Marc Broussard
Better Than Ezra
Rebirth Brass Band

Other artists that I've recently discovered (again, some of these may be old school, but new to me!):

Ben's Brother
Landon Pigg
Gabe Dixon Band
Rilo Kiley
Bob Schneider
John Butler Trio
Missy Higigns
Cat Power
Kate Voegele
Ingrid Michaelson

I'm enjoying y'all's lists! I always love learning about new artists!

Agreed. Funny part is would make better sense in the context of a blog posting....but it was actually the local printed publication, so it just kind of hung in the air waiting to be commented on by the blogosphere

After seeing her perform live a little over a week ago, I've had Ingrid Michaelson on heavy rotation on my Ipod. Great stuff!

Let's see...so while I was in England (funeral, there for 10 days), I had a discussion with a friend about good American bands. She thought there weren't any. At the time I couldn't think of one but I swore I'd grab my ipod and find some. Apparently almost my entire collection of good artists are brits so...I could use some recommendations. We wound up agreeing on The Killers and I have about 3 songs by them on my ipod.

Lately...
Dragonette (Goldfrapp meets Feist. JCPenney crowdsurfing ad. This is how I find new artists. I use adtunes.com.)
Roisin Murphy (torrent site, doesn't exist on US itunes. The song Cristina is dancing to at the beginning of the last new Grey's? I think it's the last one? Great album anyway)
Kaiser Chiefs (last year my local radio station played Ruby and people complained. WTF is wrong with people?)
Kate Nash
Lily Allen
Sia-do yourself a favour, download Breathe Me if nothing else. Though the entire new album is amazing.

I hate to do this because it kinda helps out my ex, but I've discovered some fantastic bands through http://www.ourstage.com/. OTOH it also helps out my brother because he also works for the website so...

I'm in love with Action Painters, they're brilliant.
Plushgun rule.
And finally Beehive.
I'd say Joseph Arthur but...not too new to me. But he's amazing, so if you don't know him, go listen now.

Uh . . . well . . . just in the last ~14 months, you'd probably like new releases by:

-LCD Soundsystem
-Blitzen Trapper
-Bon Iver
-Vampire Weekend
-The National
-Dirty Projectors
-Okkervil River

That ignores more "established" performers that fit your style preferences well, like:

-Elliott Smith
-Rilo Kiley (or Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins' stuff)
-Modest Mouse
-Spoon

AlexMack 03-25-2008 05:35 PM

I just realized that I have no idea why Augustana was not on my ipod. Or why NiN doesn't count!
I do have a bunch of Spoon but it seems like I tend to put more videos than music on my ipod lately since my ex hijacked my hard drive. I haven't listened to music consistently in quite some time. So for some reason it wasn't on there and I couldn't say, 'you guys are missing out, enjoy the entire Veronica Mars soundtracks.' (You'd really like them actually, whoever picked music for that show has unbelievable taste).

Also for some reason I thought Spoon was Aussie. Guess not.

Anyone who likes The National I think would also really like The Weakerthans. Very lyric-driven.

Also, as I'm sure loads of people here Feist and Cat Power, you should really check out Thao Nguyen (with the Get Down Stay Down). Her album is incredible (my #1 for January) and I saw her in concert last night...incredible.

SigmaChiCard 09-12-2008 05:03 PM

I recently saw Thao again, but this time I booked the show and put it together. If you get the chance to see her, you really really should. I should be booking her again soon, so if you live near KY, be sure to catch the show...

The Weakerthans are great. Their lyric writer use to be with Propagahndi.

I've been listenin alot to Billy Bragg and Wilco's cover of Woody Guthrie Songs.

I'm going through a Leona Lewis phase. It started about a week or so ago and getting bigger all the time! Plus, she so doggone cute! It's refreshing to see a "cute" person in the spotlight instead of the sexpots that are out now. We're not all Beyonces over here...some of us are (pre-makeover) Kellies and that's okay. :)

SigmaChiCard 06-12-2009 06:13 PM

Just to update, the new albums by the following bands are all fantastic:

*Phoenix
*Clues
*The Antlers
*Crocodiles
*Joy Formidable
*Pains of Being Pure at Heart
*Passion Pit
*The Instruction

Looking forward to the new Why? & The Radio Dept. albums to come out soon as well....
