a little OT, but since you brought up the "what do you call your country"...
I was at my grandmothers for, I believe, thanksgiving last year. I was sitting between my two cousins at the table (just the 3 of us at this table). The older one commented on my letters and called it a 'frat'. So I was like "I'm not in a frat..." that confused him so I explained its a fraternity "Same difference" "Well if you call your fraternity a frat, what do you call your country?" He looks at me for a second or two... "Um, America?" Said it again & he still didn't get it... His younger brother & I got a good laugh out of it though :) PS Alphafrog... LOVE the sig file :D |

See, the country thing never offended me because I don't place a lot of stock into swear words. It's not about the word; it's about what you MEAN. For example: A lot of people think that if they say, "Oh, Fudge!" it's better than saying, "Oh, F*ck!".
It's not. It's the EXACT SAME MEANING. Therefore, it should cause the exact same amount of offense, and to me it does. The 'country' analogy, therefore, does not cause me offense because the 'c word' is simply another word for the female anatomy. |

Eh. Only you can allow yourself to feel inferior.
I've found that brushing off things like that make life go by much easier and with much less strain. Lots of words are insulting, and few make such a stink about them. |
You don't have to feel inferior to be insulted.

Each to his or her own. It doesn't really affect me how you feel about curse words or whatnot, and good for you for expressing that opinion.
Back on topic.. |

There's not really much more to this topic anyway, the answers are either: "I don't like frat" "I use frat" "I used frat until someone told me not to" "I don't get that the NPHC often uses frat or frater" "Ha ha country get it?" |
My apologies for bringing it back up, but when we were still re-colonizing a rather boisterous alum ORDERED us not to use the term “Frat” on the basis of the “You wouldn’t call your country…” analogy. Honestly, now that I think about it, that is probably why when all the brothers go out drinking we start drunkenly chanting “Frat! Frat! Frat!”
Oh, and as a side note, at that same meeting that same alum told one of the brothers that his mother was probably a whore. It was quite the evening… |

That's just nutty... |
I didn't say I get offended at "Oh, fudge." I said I have the same level of offense as when someone uses the 'f word'. That level of offense is extremely low, almost so low as to be nonexistent. I DO, however, get annoyed when people claim that "Oh, Fudge!" is okay but "Oh, F***!" offends them.
