One of those little hand-held battery-powered fans. They are great during the week!

I would also carry some deodorant and a travel size bottle of baby powder(unscented).

Rub some of the baby powder on the palms of your hands or any other place you may get sweaty, it totally prevents sweat for the whole night. It helped me out soo much during rush and everyone was borrowing it. lol

Babypoweder also helps with sun burns, ie put it on your skin where you get a sun burn, lightly rub it around the burned area and the skin will stop itching.

brush (small enough to put in your purse)
mirror
lipstick/lipgloss

The top 3 things in my bag:

1) SHOUT WIPES
These little pre-moistioned towelettes are pretty amazing. They are great for removing any kind of stains without the aid of water. You may have a day where you have to eat lunch between parties with no time to change or you may accidentally stain your pants sitting in a lawn chair under a tent. Accidents happen. That's why they made Shout Wipes :)

2) BAND AIDS
I know several blister preventatives have been suggested but band aids are great in the event you get a blister, and also for other cuts and scrapes you might encounter during rush. Plus, you'll be a new best friend to the girls in your rush group who DO get blisters and you're there with a handy bandaid :-) Sure, your Rho Chi might carry them but buy a $1 pack from the travel aisle at Target for yourself, you may appreciate it later.

3) iPod
If you have an iPod or similiar MP3 player, take it if its not too bulky or heavy. Rush is stressful and I personally found it nice to be able to pop in my earbuds between parties. It helped me relax and also drowned out the notorious "tent talk" I tried to avoid hearing.

I'm looking foward to your rush story! Best of luck!

Oh I meant to put this in the earlier one:

TWO WORDS--Waterproof Mascara!

volsgirl2006 08-07-2007 07:10 PM

How much long until your rush starts?

Also, pack extras in your purse and you can share with other rushees you meet...take the opportunity to meet people during rush that are rushing too, it's great to know people in other sororities and you might just meet some people in your own pledge class!

AND you might want....(Some kind of energy drink or something might be helpful especially for those first LONG days, I know I was so tired during rush so a little suger pick me up might keep you goin)

One more thing to toss in your bag: bug spray. Pick up a non-scented kind, obviously, but it will come in handy. I made the mistake of not picking up any for my first day of rush and was eaten alive by the time I got to my first house. Needless to say, I was miserably itchy all night, but couldn't do a thing about it!

Bug Spray

If you are going to buy bug spray to add to your bag, I would totally recommend the new OFF--Smooth & Dry, it is great! It has a pleasant smell and doesn't feel nasty like some bug sprays. I used it at an outdoor concert a few weeks ago and it was like having a bug-free bubble around you!

Where is Classic Beauty going to put all of this stuff if she can't bring a purse?

I'm unsure of how many other universities practice this but at UF, each PNM is given a canvas tote bag (screenprinted with whatever clevel rush slogan PC has developed). These provide room for all the necessities and are left under the tents when PNMs enter the house (usually carrying a small purse they've kept tucked inside the tote).

Might ClassicBeauty's school be one that does this?

OldAOPi 08-10-2007 03:36 PM

Classic has had so much advice before she has put on her glass slippers that she will have to start a new thread when rush really starts! :D

Now if there was only something to help with the humidity....

Ok, this might be a TMI, but if you're prone to blisters and/or chaffing, they make this AWESOME stuff for athletes called BodyGlide. It comes in a tiny little deodorant like stick. Roll it on your heels/feet (i tend to get blisters on my little toes) and its waterproof, sweatproof, and not messy. I swear on my life that it will save your feet (and anything else that chaffs/rubs). Its $4 or so at a running store or sports store.

When I read the beginning of this sentence about TMI and chaffing, I thought you were going to suggest that stuff that Monistat makes that you put on between your thighs to keep them from chaffing. ;) That could be a good investment, too...but I wouldn't carry it with me all day!!
