Mostly legal texts, obviously, because of law school, but I finally finished The Beer and Whiskey League: The Illustrated History of the American Association. It's about the early days of baseball in the American Association, its fight with the National League, and the players who made up the league. I'm a baseball geek, so the information is very good; however, the authors get a bit overboard at times in complaining about the better AA players not being in the Hall of Fame.

Cute little short stories about all things southern. After that one, I'm going to read her latest work: Stop Dressing Your Six Year Old Like a Skank. I can't wait! :)

I'll have to check these out, the titles themselves are hilarious. In the meantime, I finally just sat down to finish I am Charlotte Simmons. I picked it up last summer, but just read a few pages here and there since then. I also have a small stack of le Carre to work my way through.

I've gotten through some summer reading so I figured I would bump this...

Like half the people on this site I've finished the last Harry Potter book which I loved. I also read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls and 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult. Both were excellent books in my opinion. They are the kind that you can't stop thinking about even after you've finished and sort of leave you with a feeling in the pit of your stomache. I've always been a sucker for not perfectly happy endings though.... I think most of us have some sort of dark fascination towards them, which would explain why people enjoy Romeo and Juliet I suppose.

I <3 Jen Lancaster! Have you read Bitter is the New Black? I picked it up over Christmas and could not put it down for two weeks.

Currently, I'm reading Teacher Man by Frank McCourt. I love his clear voice and honesty in teaching within the public school system. I am currenly on the chapter where he teaches at a community college. He is really aggravated and amazed at the students there. I'm rooting for him to go back to public high school.

This is my favorite quote from the book:

"I want you to realize this is the first class in the world ever to study the art of the excuse note, the first class, ever, to practice writing them. You are so lucky to have a teacher like me who has taken your best writing, the excuse note, and turned it into a subject worthy of study."

i am about to re-read Joy Luck Club for the 4th time, and i just finished A Piece Of Cake, by Cupcake Brown. this book is absolutely stunning. everything that could happen to this woman as a child, did. she is now a top attorney in California. if anyone claims that life dealt them a bad hand, and they cant get back on top of things? read this book and i assure you, there is hope for everyone.

I have about 40 pages left of Cupcake Brown's book - I have no words! She is TRULY amazing! I couldn't even wait to finish the book and went to the website a couple of weeks ago and looked at the pictures of some of her VIPs. I am going to recommend this book to one of my former Counseling instructors so she can suggest that her Substance abuse classes read this in their "spare" time.

Let's see, I've recently read

Innocent Traitor - Allison Weir (Lady Jane Grey - historical fiction and very well-done) I too love me some Tudors.

The Tipping Point - Malcolm Gladwell - very important book if you are at all interested in the spread of ideas, fads, etc.

Birth - Tina Cassidy. No, not a how to - but a discussion of how the way we handle birth has changed - great if you like social history.

Bird by Bird - Anne Lamott - I love her writings on faith. Here she tackles how to write - and does so brilliantly. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be a better writer.

For fun I'm reading the Shopaholic series (right now i'm on Shopaholic ties the knot)

For class I have to read (i'll just list them all)
The Squatter and the Don
The Devil in Texas
Music and the Mill
Las Hijas de Juan
and the shadows took him
what Night Brings
Child of Many Rivers

Let's just say I haven't had the time to read the shopaholic books b/c my class readings have taken up a lot of time

I read the Cupcake Brown book a couple of months ago. Very interesting to say the least....

The Pact by Jodi Picault, The Namesake byJuhumpa Lahiri, She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb and an old favorite, Outer Banks by Anne River Siddons were what I brought to the beach this summer.

If any of y'all like Acceptance by Susan Coll, you may also enjoy Admissions by Nancy Lieberman or The Ivy Chronicles by Karen Quinn. Both are novels about the admissions process of the best of the Manhatten private schools.

Non-fiction? I've been way too lazy....

Reading The Kite Runner right now. I'm a few pages in but so far I like it :)

I thought there was another thread about this....but this is the first I came across...so i'll bump it :)

I just finished book 1 of Percy and the Olympians, which is the Lightning Thief. It is a book more for a younger reader (my 11 year old cousin loves the series lol) but I still enjoyed it! I love Greek Mythology so this was just a fun read. I ended up ordering the rest of the series (up to book 5) on Amazon.

Now i'm starting Alice in Wonderland again. It was one of myfavorites when I was younger (through the looking glass included) so i'm just hoping I'll still love it :)

I don't want to show my nerd too much, but I do a little bit of pen/paper/dice gaming. Recently our group ran a game loosely based on Alice in Wonderland. I read the story as a child but I would love to pick it up again and read both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Right now, I'm reading Raise the Titanic by Clive Cussler. In the book, which is part of a series, there is a rare mineral needed to complete the US's super secret ultimate weapon hidden in the Titanic, 2 miles under the Atlantic. The Russians are catching on to the US's plans and I'm sure there's all kinds of crazy plot twists. I'm only half way through. :o

The copy I'm reading was loaned to me by s/o. I don't quite understand his fascination with old books; this copy was printed in 1980 but the first printing was almost 5 years prior.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows! Although I've stopped about 250 pages in because of school now. I think my bf might kill me if I don't finish soon :D

honeychile 02-03-2010 12:35 AM

Just finished The Assassin's Accomplice, about Mary Surratt, one of the condemned conspirators. If you're into the Lincoln assassination, I highly recommend it.

Am about one chapter into Remember This Titan, about Coach Bill Yoast. Remember The Titans is one of my absolute favorite movies, a real "feel good" movie for me! As for the book, so far, so good! I have a few others ready to read, but I've been crazy busy.

AlphaFrog 02-03-2010 06:06 AM

I just picked up Book 3 (Shadowland) of the Immortals series by Alyson Noel. It's supposed to be one of those "If you like Twilight, then you'll love..." type things, but so far, I'm not totally impressed. This one's got a "Read of the Month" sticker on it, so maybe this one is better than the other two. I'm really only reading it because I think the series has POTENTIAL to be good, I just haven't really seen it yet.

It's kind of like Napoleon Dynamite - I spent the whole movie thinking "This is going to be good - any second now, it's going to be SOOO funny and I'm just going to burst out laughing..." and then the credits starting rolling and I was like WTF just happened here?
