If the word has already been defined, then the people who originally coined the term are the ones who truly know how to use it. If later people want to distort the meaning of the word in an attempt to give it the meaning they would like it to have, that's fine. It's really not a big deal :)

Plantations are just gated communities. That is all. On HHI, the first 5 gated communities were named after the 5 big plantations of yesteryear. No negative connotations.

Before trying to make some kind of judgemental remark, maybe you should look into the context of the statement. We were talking about Hilton Head Resort. The gated "Plantation" areas are where about 99 percent of all of the wealthy, socialite southeners are located. The main parts of the island are always filled with trashy northen tourists that we don't like to be around.
