It's already been said, but Alpha Gam allows new members to wear letters, just not the crest.

My main problem is when people drop/don't get initiated, and then they run around with our letters on saying they're still in a sorority, or just wear our letters period. You don't know what it means, it doesn't mean the same thing to you as it does to me...take it off! I had a girl in one of my classes tell the professor that she "was in a sorority once but thought it was really stupid" wearing a sweatshirt with "ALPHA GAMMA DELTA" across her chest! I almost had a fit! Great one for our PR, there.

Kappa Kappa Psi does not support or encourage the display and/or use of any regalia/paraphernalia (Cofa, Letters, fraternal calls, handshake, etc.) or any other aspects of the Fraternity by anyone other than duly initiated Brothers of the Psi (and honoraries, when such is the case). Until one has has earned the right to wear these items, they are not to be worn.

Besides, we have symbols/regalia specifically for MIKKYs (or MIPs, or "pledges", depending on your point of view)...;) These symbols are as visible as the Fraternity letters. For those who think letters are necessary to identify/publicize the journey of prospective (read, not "new") members, these symbols leave no doubt for anyone who witnesses them.

I also understand the reasoning behind the position of many of the Greeks on GC. Membership is earned, it is not given freely. And when you start a MIP, you have earned only the privilege to participate in that MIP. It isn't a free ride (or at least, shouldn't be) and it's definitely no sure thing that you will cross. Many MIPs will start, but fewer will finish.

In short: Until you complete the journey to Psi, you should not (and will not) wear the letters. It's as simple as that. Period.

There is an obvious difference in "culture" between two principal (and opposing) viewpoints where each side has presented reasonable arguments for their position. While I do respect the opinions of the opposing side, this is a situation where the two schools of thought will simply have to "agree to disagree". ;)

we had the rule that you couldn't wear the block letters until you were initiated and then our CAB came and told us that it was a form of hazing. that's faggotry

Yes, but just because you go to that school doesn't mean you weren't born and raised in Juno, Alaska. That's up north, west of Canada if your map doesn't show anything higher then the Mason-Dixon line.

volgirl 04-18-2006 02:54 PM

valid point, but i was indeed raised in the south, and yes my map does show me states above the mason-dixon line, i just chose to avoid said places and most of the people who inhabit them.

Just because she may seem to fit the stereotype doesn't mean she stereotypes Southerners like me or the vast majority of Southerners I know.
