I'm sorry, you lost me on this one.

Being articulate makes you no less "Black", does it?

IvySpice 02-02-2006 01:27 PM

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but mulattogyrl, I believe that Rudey is confusing some posters' dislike of the condescending label "articulate" with a general dislike of black people being articulate.

The problem is with a historically loaded label, not with black people speaking academic English.

Being one of the seven who posted (and not with anything of substance, mind you), I viewed this thread as somewhat inappropriate dialogue as the many viewers probably did as well. I have no history to offer any other input and others probably felt the same way and moved on...

I just checked and there have been 294 views of this thread since yesterday. So, why have only seven people said a word? Is it just easier to fade into the background and not get involved? I know it's difficult...

Y'all, some of the comments in this thread are unabashedly racist and *some* are unforgivably ignorant.

:(

mulattogyrl 02-02-2006 01:29 PM

^^Thanks for clearing that up IvySpice. I knew I wasn't getting it, lol.

Thanks for saying this, Rudey. (Not to even mention Hasidic Judaism in this country, adherents to which are CLEARLY recognized as Jews.)

IvySpice, which poster called another "Articulate"?

How was it used condescendingly?

I repeat: You are kinda like the weird girl who intrudes a conversation and says something stupid, causing an uncomfortable silence/grimace among the group.

Alum called HUkingPIKE articulate. The problem was that if a white person had said the same the HUkingPIKE said, he wouldn't have been called articulate. I'm sure alum didn't mean it in a condescending manner, but some of us take offense to it.

If that's the case, they are not your friends, but acquaintances. There's a huge difference between the two terms.

Just because they aren't my best friends, doesn't make them not my friends. Most of them I met in the music dept. at school. I was studying opera, not many black opera singers (notice I said many not any), just like there aren't many white rappers.

Why do you assume that I'm white? Because I went to a PWI instead of an HBCU? Because I joined an NPC GLO at my school instead of an NPHC GLO? Maybe it's because I am articulate.

Don't make snap judgements on someone and guess their ethnic background.

I didn't say you were white.

No, in fact, no one ever has license to treat someone else with contempt and disrespect. Respect should not be something you earn by talking a certain way; it is your due as a human being and a member of this community. Nothing you do can EVER justify someone treating you as a slave. Even if I were Pharaoh's slave by law right this minute, anyone with any human decency ought to treat me with the same respect they show to others.
As it should be! I believe it was mulattogyrl who had the signature quoted by Shirley Chisolm (and others) which said, "Service to others is the rent you pay for the space you occupy on earth." Treating each other with respect is a main pillar of that service to others, IMHO.

So only members of "us" can call one of our own articulate? I think you made some broad-based assumptions because I thought that HUkingPIKE had a strong opinion and voiced it clearly and concisely.
