Riiiiiight.

Like the shock of going from a warm, confined space where you're surrounded by fluid to being pushed down a narrow canal out into this bright, big, cold room isn't traumatic enough?

While I admire those women who choose to have natural childbirths, I'm allll about the epidural when I have this kid.

PPD can be much easier to avoid by aking DHa supplements . . . I am sure docs tell their patients about that now so people that ignore the advice are kind of asking for it.
People who post clueless things on a message board are kind of asking to be kicked in the face.

I'm sure he prepared for the pain of a face-kicking by taking his supplements.

Same with "Velvet Goldmine."

So, I looked it up on Google.... Sounds kinda strange. Though the review I read kinda made me want to watch it. :p

A few comments about what we called "natural childbirth." I don't know if that name is still in use.

All three of our children were born without any drugs or medicine. That experience is not for everyone, but Mrs. DA felt strongly that she wanted to be in command of her body and mind during the experience.

There really wasn't what I would call "screaming" at all. But it wasn't silent either. While it doesn't sound lady-like, I would say there was some pretty loud "grunting." That was on behalf of the mother. The child generally doesn't cry until just after the birth -- and that cry is usually good news.

By the way, there are some benefits to the newborn if the mother doesn't take drugs, because those medications get to the baby's system through the umbilicle cord and affect its' actions and reactions, sometimes including the ability to breastfeed (if that's what the parents intend) because the senses are dulled.

Finally, I was there for all three, and wasn't traumatized -- actually, it was pretty magical.

All I know is that when the time comes (and trust me, it will be SEVERAL years from now), my husband will NOT be the one making the drugs or no drugs decision.

kddani 10-06-2005 01:52 PM

Now what if she has to have a c-section? Oh hey, let's cut open your stomach and pull out a baby, but sorry, no drugs for you!

DeltAlum 10-06-2005 01:55 PM

I've never heard of a C-Section without drugs. That's not "natural" childbirth -- that's surgery.

And the husband should absolutely not make the decision as to whether the wife should or should not take pain-killing or other drugs -- but should be there to support whatever decision his wife makes.

Now THAT is a good husband comment! Very nice. :)

I wasn't directing the c-section comment to your comment, sorry, should've been more clear. It was more directed theoretically towards Mr. Cruise :)

Jill1228 10-06-2005 02:10 PM

What he said! Mr. 1228 is like "whatever you want".

Unless he can feel my pain, he can't say shit about what I can and cannot have

Ok. I know just a tiny little about Scientology. Scientology was created by L. Ron Hubbard. He wrote a book called Dianetics. He basicly said that he wanted to create a religion so he could become rich. I can't remember all what they believe but it can easily be googled.

I have birthed a child and anyone who can get though it w/o drugs is a stronger woman than me. I mean it was getting ugly and I had a short labor.

I also heard on Glenn Beck that Tom has some type of contract with Katie that she is to help him promote scientology. As far as I'm concerned they are both a bunch of psychos. Too bad Tom can't buy his way out of hell when he's burning there. Sorry for the strong opinions but some people are so dumb and full of themselves they'll believe anything...

James 10-06-2005 03:56 PM

Sure it is. If your doctor tells you that taking DHA supplements both lessens the chance of PPD and lessens the severity of it if you get it, and you choose not to use it, you are asking for it.

It doesn't mean you deserve it. Deserve is a different concept.

Its like using folic acid to prevent neural tube defects, if you refuse to use them and your child gets a preventable neural tube defect you kind of asked for it.

Again, you don't deserve it, just asked for it.

And James, nobody is "asking for it." While taking supplements may reduce the chance of PPD, it certainly doesn't eliminate it. Furthermore, with Tom Cruise's anti-drug stance, who knows if he'd even be okay with Katie taking them (although maybe he considers them a "vitamin" in which case she's okay -- haha).
