How is drinking different? |
We are told in the beginning when you smoke to sit down. most people do it, and we can smoke onthe back porch of our chapter house, not in the front.
|
Why am I just imagining the improv game "Sitting, standing, lying" while a cigarette is passed around?
Seriously though, would someone send you to a standards board of *gasp* your legs weren't crossed or you were standing and smoking? Who has the time to worry about that? For the record...no smoking allowed in the Tau Delta House or around it (because it is a campus structure). None of our current sisters smoke, so it is not a problem. As far as letters are concerned...I think that no one really gives a crap. |

Trashy... Our Bylaws stated you could only smoke in the privacy of your own home, and not in the chapter house. It wasn't that enforceable, but it scared the smokers enough to respect it.

I can definately see what you mean by that not being very enforceable. |
If it is in your bylaws, don't smoke in letters.
Remember that when in letters or not in letters, you represent your organization. Your actions and words can be taken to represent the whole. I agree-- Tough to enforce, but it is up to the individual to act in a matter that befits the letters she assumed when she accepted her obligations of membership. ETA: per my chapter, we couldn't smoke on or around sorority grounds, in letters, or even in a car that had letters. Typically, the new members were scared out of their habit because it was impressed that every action you take reflects back on the chapter. Whether this was a good way to instill a practice or not, we had very few incidences of members smoking and those who smoked were extremely discrete about where they smoked cigarettes. |

Unless you are breaking the law by smoking in a building that is no-smoking, or unless you are the rare college student under 18, how is doing it something that doesn't "befit your letters"? Maybe the next thing should be no eating fatty foods in your letters. And the sickening thing is that as I typed that, I can imagine some chapters ACTUALLY MAKING A RULE LIKE THAT. |
We are not allowed to smoke, drink, or do anything along those lines in our letters- EVER.
I only read the first page of this thread and I take offense to the person who said people in the north are more trashy. That is simply not true. I've been south and seen a fair share of trashy people down there, so don't try to pin trashiness on the north! |
no smoking...
Perhaps Copenhagen or Mail Pouch would be better and in this
day and age, spittoons and urinals might fit well in the palatial mansions in dixieland sorority houses |

I really dislike smoking in general...
I think smoking in letters looks *a little* trashy, but people do wear the shirts all day long, and you gotta consider that. It doesn't bother me anymore... think about this one:
Would it be worse PR to see a Greek smoke in letters, or to see the Greek smokers in letters snapping at everyone because they can't get their nicotine fix? Or to just never see those Greeks wearing letters? |
