Great post Confucius.

I don't own a gun personally although I don't have an issue with people wanting to own them either for hunting, protection, or whatever. I do think there needs to be some limitations as to the kind of gun that are available for purchase/ownership because seriously - unless you're in law enforcement or the military why do you need an semi-automatic assault rifle? It's certainly not a good hunting weapon. ;)

I wouldn't mind learning how to shoot a gun at the range, but I would never own one. My father is a police officer, so I grew up with a gun in my house. He always kept his locked up, though. I never really thought twice about it and sometimes I forgot he had it there. He did it keep it on him, in certain circumstance, for our protection. For everyone who does keep a gun in the house, is it really accessible enough to be of any use in a real emergency?

I don't think we'll be seeing any real debate about gun laws, despite recent events. That's really a shame, because there is no way that people with records of mental health issues should be allowed to buy a gun. I don't think you should be able to buy a gun without safety training, fingerprinting, etc. Sadly, a lot of state laws barely have any requirements at all.

I would rather live somewhere where I have the opportunity to purchase a gun. I just hope all the posters that said they don't want average citizens owning a gun never run for public office

I don't own a gun, but Mr. KimL owns 2, so I have had to learn how to use it. I must admit going to the shooting range was a rush, but I'm still not sure if I would actually use it, but who is to say depending on the situation I found myself in.

Yes. A .38 semi-automatic. I've owned it for over ten years. I bought it when I was around 21 years old for protection after an incident. I prefer to have one around because I live alone. I have used it several times at shooting ranges, but that's about it. I keep it locked away and out of reach of children (my nieces/nephews, godson, etc...)

I'm with this poster. It takes a lot for me to lose my temper, but once I do, I wouldn't want a gun around.

Hi Soror,
Why not? Do you think such a person would be successful?
