The Duke University LGBT Center will host Rashid Darden for a novel reading and signing of his debut novel, Lazarus <http://thebook.oldgoldsoul.com/> on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 5:30pm.

Darden tells the captivating story of a black, gay college student — Adrian Collins – on a predominately white campus who seeks the brotherhood of a fraternity while nurturing a relationship with his new found soul mate, Savion Cortez. This story will resonate with many college students for the emotional turmoil that develops around how much to reveal, when to reveal, and whom to trust.

This is the day I have worked so hard to see.

On Sunday, November 20, 2005, from 3pm to 5pm, I will be participating in the 2005 Literary Expo, sponsored by the Federal City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The event will be held at American University in the Kay Spiritual Life Center. You can visit http://www.thefcacdst.org for the details.

The headlining author will be Nikki Giovanni. I am honored and humbled by the chance to participate in this event with her. She has been my inspiration and role model – her poetry inspires me to constantly do better. It is beautiful, yet plainspoken. I love her!

If you have that Sunday free, please consider joining me at this event. It will be the most special day of my year so far. To be invited to this event in the first place was honor enough, but to learn that Nikki Giovanni would be there is overwhelming.

The Life and Death of Savion Cortez is a book of poetry I've written to complement the Lazarus Trilogy. It is available here, right now!

You do not need to have read Lazarus, Covenant, or Epiphany in order to appreciate the poetry. However, when you ultimately read them all, it comes together quite nicely. It's not very often that you get to read another book from the perspective of the other guy.

The Life and Death of Savion Cortez....

So I got my copy in the mail two days ago and I've already finished every single poem! For those of you who've read Lazarus, I must say it'll really make you feel like you don't know Savion AT ALL! I thought I had his character pegged as the asshole boyfriend of Adrian's, who was ignorant about Greek life and just didn't care enough to learn more and support his man during his process.

Now I feel like he was going through so much more! Rashid makes you believe that every poem was written with this character in mind.

I love how the feelings of love, lust anger and heartache are splashed throughout the book. Half the time I don't know if Savion is just lovesick, horny or truly crazy!

It really makes me want to read a book all about what Savion's college experience was like before Lazarus, and what he's been doing since he and Adrian part ways.

Kudos Mr. Darden, this book has definitely wet my chops for the release of the entire trilogy!!!
